Skyrim Patch We’re All Waiting For Coming Very Soon

Plenty of weird issues on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC getting fixed this week.

DRAAAAAAGONS.
DRAAAAAAGONS.

Having games like Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and Rayman: Origins around has made the process of putting The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on hold the last few weeks considerably easier.

When Bethesda Game Studios announced a patch was in the works to fix the annoying texture bug when the Xbox 360 version of the game is installed to the hard drive, I paused my addiction.

That patch is finally coming to all platforms this week, starting with the PlayStation 3 version, and fixes the texture issue, amongst many other things. The patch should be live for European PS3 users now, with Bethseda hoping the patch arrives on Xbox 360 and PC on Wednesday.

The full change list, dubbed version 1.2, courtesy of Bethesda:

  • Improved occasional performance issues resulting from long term play (PlayStation 3)
  • Fixed issue where textures would not properly upgrade when installed to drive (Xbox 360)
  • Fixed crash on startup when audio is set to sample rate other than 44100Hz (PC)
  • Fixed issue where projectiles did not properly fade away
  • Fixed occasional issue where a guest would arrive to the player’s wedding dead
  • Dragon corpses now clean up properly
  • Fixed rare issue where dragons would not attack
  • Fixed rare NPC sleeping animation bug
  • Fixed rare issue with dead corpses being cleared up prematurely
  • Skeleton Key will now work properly if player has no lockpicks in their inventory
  • Fixed rare issue with renaming enchanted weapons and armor
  • Fixed rare issue with dragons not properly giving souls after death
  • ESC button can now be used to exit menus (PC)
  • Fixed occasional mouse sensitivity issues (PC)
  • General functionality fixes related to remapping buttons and controls (PC)

This will likely be the first of several patches for Skyrim. Now I just need to make sure I’m done with Uncharted 3 before the patch drops on Wednesday, and the addiction begins all over again...

Fixed occasional issue where a guest would arrive to the player’s wedding dead.

The beginnings of a quest, methinks.

Might be the be the best patch note detail ever.

I kind of don't want that one fixed.

Cool! That projectile thing was annoying although you just drop your standard arrows in a corpse and re-collect them and it goes away. Anyone having PS3 frame rate issues? Or am I just being too picky, seems to drop considerable frames every few seconds for me.

I was hoping for some performance optimizations for the PC version but I suppose that's too much to hope for for the first patch. Though I do hope that either Bethesda or ATI/nvidia addresses this sometime in the future.

Dragons not attacking, not giving souls, and their corpses piling up all over places I frequently fast travel to have all been problems for me on the PC. Good to hear they're getting fixed. The ESC key thing would have been nice to have before I spent 60+ hours getting used to using Tab. I hope they eventually fix the one where I spend 15 seconds staring VERY INTENTLY at my arcane enchanter after I'm done using it.

@ptys: I've noticed it too. And my game would sometimes become practically unplayable after just about a few hours or so of gameplay. Glad to see it's a known issue that's getting fixed.

Have only had two freeze-ups and some framerate issues before the patch, which hasn't happened again yet but it never really effected me THAT much.. I did however, after just having installed the patch, run into a dragon that started glowing green (well.. textureless) and flying backwords+standing still in mid-air :P

@Cybexx:  No kidding.  I was having major issues  with the menus on the PC version for the first couple hours. Wanting to press ESC is kinda built into your expectations when you play games on PC.

I didn't see a bullet point for :

  • Fixed glitch where textures are replaced by a solid neon purple texture (PC)
  • Fixed PC version so it doesn't crash every half hour after you have played more than 10 hours

They get those hammered out and I will be a happy camper...

Yeah the frame rates only a minor gripe, but it would make the visuals pretty flawless if it didn't drop so much. I wonder if the X360 and PC have the same issue?

I bought the official Sony 7.1 surround headset and was really looking forward to using it with Skyrim, but the audio cuts out randomly for 1-3 seconds and this patch didn't fix anything. The headset works great with every other game, ughh.

I was reading on the Bethesda forums earlier today that the PS3 pathc traded off the improved framerate for reduced textures. Can anyone confirm this? Does the PS3 version actually look more pooplike post patch. Heh, try saying that three times fast..........heh, heh........aaaaaahh <facepalm>

Patch! Awesome.

Any love for acquiring the Riften house? That is a most fuckest-upest quest series and process. I know it doesn't have to be easy, but does it have to be near impossible?

I like it how most of those issues are called "rare".

I was thinking the same thing. I figured it's a seemingly subtle way to make the game seem less buggy to people reading it, especially those less familiar with the game, but to me, it really just makes it seem like they're fixing minor issues and ignoring the big ones.

I'm glad they addressed the PC menu/binding issues, but I'm still waiting for them to just revamp them out of shitty 360 mode.

What, so my pile of 6 dragon skeletons will disappear from the College of Winterhold? Why would I want that?

The remapping thing sounds good. I switched "E" and SPACE so it would be consistent with old TES games yet when I do stuff in the menu it still tells me the default hotkeys. The ESC key thing will be great because after 71 hours I still hit it when I want to leave the menu system. Old habits die hard.

Overall, I wouldn't need a patch to keep playing. I just want this stupid week done so I can play again. Damn you essays/labs/finals!!!

No luck on my problem with Shalidor's Writings, then? The book isn't where the arrow goes. It seems to be jammed in the geometry, beneath the floor of a cave.

Did you try a couple of shouts to push stuff around? (Which is possibly how it got stuck there in the first place, but oh well). I had something like that happen but a good shout (I either used the force push or the calm animals one. I forget which) bounced the item back and I could pick it up.

I really don't know why people are making a big deal about textures in a game that already looks good and you're going to be exploring through at a decent pace.

...

That right there is a problem that impacts every single part of the game, from exploring to combat to trivial things like selling shit to a vendor. And it also causes texture streaming problems too, where they would load layer by layer like in Mass Effect 1 on the 360. I literally saw the cobblestone in Whiterun stream in before my eyes, each layer increasing slightly in detail.

Why did you make a big deal about it?

I'm so glad it's not just me. Being archmage, along with a half dozen wealthy vendors in one spot (and the perk that lets me sell anything to anyone) means I'm running to the college after every dragon attack elsewhere to sell the heavy bones, and after every dungeon to sell loot.

It feels like every fourth trip there's a dragon attack there. I had four skeletons in the courtyards, one that spawns on the bridge and falls off, another right in the entranceway, and two more at the bottom of the cliff. It's getting ridiculous.

Luckily, the Unbound Dremora I summoned for the master conjuration spells bugged so that he never left properly, and always distracts the dragons so I can wipe them out.

I ran into a glitch today that made it so I could only select things from the favorites menu with the X button (PS3), triggers unresponsive, weapons would not unholster when I hit square. To fix it I had to select magic for both hands, then I could holster and unholster again. weird.

Ran into some strangeness in an assassination quest as well. There was a person I needed to kill lying on the floor of a room. Door open, line of sight clear for shooting of arrows from out in the hallway. I shot arrow, guy stood up to deliver his line of dialogue, then warped back down into his original lying down position. I shot again, he died. Apparently you are not supposed to be able to stealth kill this guy. When you enter the room, he is supposed to lock you into dialogue, after which you can't enter "hidden" status anymore, no more stealth attack bonus, probably no 1-hit kill (level and build dependent), then he's supposed to get up and fight you. I broke it. Would have been more satisfying if my original arrow did 100% damage, but then I wouldn't have seen him warp across the room. :D

When I uninstalled the game after hearing about the issue, i was stunned to discover my character had fingernails, and veins on his hands. I spent twenty minutes staring at doors and such in Whiterun, never realizing they were so detailed.

I save plenty often. The reason I ended up with so much lost time is because I didn't just barrel through the main quest. I would do a mission or two at a time, and then go off and do something completely different for a few hours. When I returned to that questline sometime later, it wouldn't work, forcing me to check previous saves for the closest instance of it not being broken. That still, unfortunately, results in lost time.

Also, having any progression breaking bug, even one that does not cost play time to correct, is unacceptable. To have three would have resulted in a return for any other game. It shouldn't be on me to find workarounds for a game's shortcomings.

Downloaded and installed the patch for my PS3. It seems to be running fine except that there's a chance it crashes when the game autosaves.

I've turned off autosaving for travelling from one place to another, hopefully now I can adventure with less interruption.

I REALLY hate when I'm listening to an interesting/important conversation between two characters in a crowded area and then one idiotic NPC walks through the conversation and/or gets stuck nearby and repeats their crap dialogue over and over. "I'M LEARNING TO BE A BLACKSMITH!!!!!!" on repeat arrghhh.

Also whenever I dismount a horse I control the horse separately for a few moments before regaining control of my actual character on the ground.
