Skyrim Patch We’re All Waiting For Coming Very Soon

Plenty of weird issues on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC getting fixed this week.

DRAAAAAAGONS.
DRAAAAAAGONS.

Having games like Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and Rayman: Origins around has made the process of putting The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on hold the last few weeks considerably easier.

When Bethesda Game Studios announced a patch was in the works to fix the annoying texture bug when the Xbox 360 version of the game is installed to the hard drive, I paused my addiction.

That patch is finally coming to all platforms this week, starting with the PlayStation 3 version, and fixes the texture issue, amongst many other things. The patch should be live for European PS3 users now, with Bethseda hoping the patch arrives on Xbox 360 and PC on Wednesday.

The full change list, dubbed version 1.2, courtesy of Bethesda:

  • Improved occasional performance issues resulting from long term play (PlayStation 3)
  • Fixed issue where textures would not properly upgrade when installed to drive (Xbox 360)
  • Fixed crash on startup when audio is set to sample rate other than 44100Hz (PC)
  • Fixed issue where projectiles did not properly fade away
  • Fixed occasional issue where a guest would arrive to the player’s wedding dead
  • Dragon corpses now clean up properly
  • Fixed rare issue where dragons would not attack
  • Fixed rare NPC sleeping animation bug
  • Fixed rare issue with dead corpses being cleared up prematurely
  • Skeleton Key will now work properly if player has no lockpicks in their inventory
  • Fixed rare issue with renaming enchanted weapons and armor
  • Fixed rare issue with dragons not properly giving souls after death
  • ESC button can now be used to exit menus (PC)
  • Fixed occasional mouse sensitivity issues (PC)
  • General functionality fixes related to remapping buttons and controls (PC)

This will likely be the first of several patches for Skyrim. Now I just need to make sure I’m done with Uncharted 3 before the patch drops on Wednesday, and the addiction begins all over again...

Just got patch 2.01 for the PS3.

The good news is that it has seriously reduced lag on my game, which was BAD. By bad I mean 180 hours of play time and a 14MB save file bad. I had to reboot every hour or so. Not having problems yet, will post again if I do. I have noticed little fixes, like glitched quests getting closed off under Misc like they should have been.

The bad news is that there are still a tonne of glitches. The biggest one for me is that I cannot progress that Thieves Guild quests, after completing Loud and Clear I cannot initiate Dampened Spirits. This is really annoying, I understand this is the best quest arc in the game, like Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion >_<

I also have Finn's Lute and Pantea's Flute stuck in my inventory, in spite of finishing the associated quests. And Prowler's Profit still does not show up under active effects.

"ESC button can now be used to exit menus (PC)" that is a good one. I remember looting the first corpse in the Tutorial and then literally spending a couple minutes trying to figure out how to get out of that menu. Because the tutorial teaching the use of the TAB key doesn't come up til after that and it took me a while to figure out you can close things by clicking on the edge of the screen.

No luck on my problem with Shalidor's Writings, then? The book isn't where the arrow goes. It seems to be jammed in the geometry, beneath the floor of a cave.

I really don't know why people are making a big deal about textures in a game that already looks good and you're going to be exploring through at a decent pace. Especially since it's only there if you install it to the HDD. If you're examining a rock you're doing it wrong anyway.

The framerate problems on PS3 after 2 hours or so of play, in my opinion, is a much bigger and more game breaking problem. Try fighting a dragon or group of Foresworn and then having the framerate hit single digits and take a massive shit all over you. That right there is a problem that impacts every single part of the game, from exploring to combat to trivial things like selling shit to a vendor. And it also causes texture streaming problems too, where they would load layer by layer like in Mass Effect 1 on the 360. I literally saw the cobblestone in Whiterun stream in before my eyes, each layer increasing slightly in detail.

What about the issue where a character you talk to goes shooting up in the air and begins a slow spiral down, eventually drilling down to the world's core? All while you're still talking? Granted that one did fix when I reloaded the last save. Still, only real bug of note I ran into, and was a fairly ridiculous one.

I almost ran into a quest-breaking bug for the Companions questline, but jumping back a few autosaves and Skyrim wiki got around the bug. That's the only real bad bug I've run into, though my inventory at this point is a nightmare.

Otherwise I'm fifty hours in with little chance of stopping. It hasn't really detracted from my experience, but the nicer textures will be great to get. I have a feeling especially the snowy areas are going to look much better.

The "occasional mouse sensitivity issues" fix had better fix the y-axis craziness that happens. The speed of y-axis movement is actually directly tied to the framerate. As a result, I look up and down very fast indoors and very slowly outdoors right now.

Also, "Fixed occasional issue where a guest would arrive to the player’s wedding dead." Lulz.

That's just the random blessings of mighty Talos, NOT AN ISSUE. I consider myself lucky when ancient dragons don't swoop down to destroy my life.

I've had that a few times also. I just convinced myself those dragons wanted no part of my hot steel. Or it was the same dragon spying on me.

I love their use of "rare" in these patch notes. I've been able to fix a few of the bugs using the console commands but I've still got a couple broken quests to figure out a solution for.

Oh well, it's not quite all the fixes I want but I'm sure they will be quick to follow up this patch.

@Maajin: Since it's a single player game I'd say performance issues and scripting bugs are vastly more important. Cheat if you wanna I say.

Haven't had nearly as many glitches and lock ups as I did with the Fallout games, and I still played the hell out of them. The only Skyrim lockup I had was 50 hours in and it was during a dragon fight, so it kinda made sense. Now that it mentions it I did have a dragon just circle me a bunch of times, then fly away. I thought it was just because I didnt attack. As for guests showing up dead to weddings, man that sounds like a funny glitch to have happen!

Huh, I've not encountered any of these problems (yet). The only thing I want them to fix is [POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOLLOWING] the damn dog, Barbus. He won't stop pushing me around, and has pushed me off cliffs to my death when talking to NPCs; due to the inability of the game to register that he's next to me. I'd also like him to bark less.

Irritating little cunt.

Besides sale prices, patching is another good reason to buy games 6-12 months old. I mean, a game as big as this, even the video card manufacturers have to come out with new drivers.

You aren't the only one. I just assumed I'd finally put the fear of God into those motherfuckers, so some of them were thinking twice before jumping on the pointy end of my sword.

I did suffer from the "Dead dragons not giving up their souls" bug, though; luckily it's only happened twice.

@RileyCola: So far I haven't seen a way to rename my weapons after enchanting them. Possibly they are also referring to the fact that upgrading two one handed weapons of the same type (i.e. two glass daggers), makes it impossible to dual wield them.

@KillyDarko said:

THIS. Texture bug and this > others. I can handle fewer dragon attacks and souls, since I'm not running out of the latter and they tend to interrupt the flow of the game (turning in a quest when a dragon attacks, forcing conversations to end and possibly killing quest npcs).

@SpunkyJunky: on PC you hit the "F" key(I believe) to rename an enchanted item after you put the enchant on it. It had some serious issues when you'd move the mouse to another part of the screen and have to back entirely out of the enchanting interface to get it to work properly again

80 hours played. 60 hours played with LAA enabled. 60 hours without a random crash to desktop. The 4 gig enabler has been a must have for Oblivion, FO3, and New Vegas.

Just dump it in your Skyrim folder and launch the game with the enabler instead of the launcher.
