Skyward Sword Includes a Really Nasty Glitch

Following a particular sequence will stop you from moving forward in the game.

Unlike the other platforms, Wii isn't as suited to issuing things like patches and title updates.
Unlike the other platforms, Wii isn't as suited to issuing things like patches and title updates.

I’m about to put you in a difficult position if you haven’t played The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but you should hear me out.

Rumors spoke of a game-breaking bug, and Nintendo has apparently acknowledged this in a support email received by Zelda Informer.

In order to know what to avoid, you have to tread a bit into spoiler territory--but it’s not that bad.

The glitch occurs during the Song of the Hero quest, if you follow this exact sequence:

  1. At the beginning of the quest, go to Lanayru Desert to retrieve the song of the Thunder Dragon.
  2. In the Lanayru Mine, speak with Golo the Goron.
  3. Complete the Thunder Dragon's event, and receive his song.
  4. Before heading to the forest or volcano regions, speak with Golo in the mine again.
  5. At this point, the forest and volcano events will no longer occur, making it impossible to continue.

Tackling the other dragons that are part of the Song of the Hero quest will ensure that the glitch doesn’t occur, however.

Nintendo does not appear to have a clear remedy for this at the moment. I’ve contacted the company about it, but options could include a bonafide patch or issuing fixed saves for users who are already glitched. I'll let you know what I hear.

Does anyone know why the Wii doesn't have patches? I can't really see any reason why not. Or why they can't at least put something like that in the Wii Shop to download.

@MooseyMcMan: I don't think Nintendo built sending out patches into the system. Also there's only 512mb of memory to use and they aren't very generous with what let they you store on an SD card. They could maybe fix it through a firmware update kind of like what Sony did with Liberty City Stories on PSP where you could access homebrew or pirated games by parking in your garage or something. I don't remember it that well. Though that might have been a system problem and not a game issue. Who knows. I'm sure Nintendo will fix the problem and the second set of discs they print will have the issue corrected.

They do, but you have to have the Patch's friend code in order to download it.

That seems like a fairly easy way to break the game. Pity.

It's simply because the console was designed with online in mind. It's a pain in the ass to do anything online with the wii. It's simply because this is their first online console. Sony and Xbox learned their lessons with online with the PS2 and Xbox respectively.

Oof, that's a glaring error. I'll have to tell my fiance not to do that dragon first when he gets there.

Yeah they have. There was a game ending bug in the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time if you got the keys for the doors wrong. Do them in the wrong sequence and you had to start over.

So, knowing nothing about Skyward Sword, how common is this glitch? I mean, do you have to go out of your way to get it to happen, or could a random person playing the game without outside influences encounter the glitch?

Twilight Princess had a game breaking bug if you saved in that cannon room.

Other M had a game breaking bug that their solution was to have people send them their save files on a memory stick.

The glitch occurs if you you talk to Golo after getting the Thunder Dragons song while only having aquired the Thunder Dragons song up to that point. Doing the Thunder Dragon first is not an issue, just going to Lanayru Mine immediately after and talking to Golo causes it.

I did the Thunder Dragon first and had no thought of heading to Golo afterwards (and I played it before walkthroughs had been published so it isn't like I looked up to see that their was no point in returning to him).

All you have to remember is that after you have talked with Golo allowing oyu to head to the Thunder Dragon then you have no reason at all to go back to him, he does not have new dialog or any quests after this attached to him. If you remember that then this glitch cannot occur, you can still do the Thunder Dragon first.

I was so worried when I read about this on eurogamer. I'm slightly past the point where this happens but I think I'm good.

I did Volcano-Forest-Desert because I needed to go to the volcano for a side quest.

Yeah, just like Skyrim this game can´t possibly be GOTY, right? Because it has some bugs.

So yeah, Game of the year is going to... wait, it can´t go to any fucking game released in the history of forever. They all have bugs. Jesus Christ, people are reacting to some titles this year as if they had never seen any bugs in their lives. Guess that happens, cause most of these people seem to be 12 years old and their only experience with videogames prior to this generation was fucking swiping the screen on their Iphone.

Yeah, a game-ending glitch should be left for the players to discover themselves. What was Patrick thinking posting this and helping people out? This is almost as bad as the time he posted about Skyrim's patch being broken! I mean, who cares, right? Not like any of us PLAY these things...

I believe I've run into another Game-Breaking error in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but i would like some kind of confirmation before starting my game over and thus loosing 20 Hours of gameplay. Has anyone out there run into the following:

After leaving the Isle of Songs for the first time, I was told to travel to Faron Woods for the first trial in the silent realm. After finding the sacred butterflies and using the harp to open the gate I jumped into Farore's Silent Realm. I didn't complete the trial and had to leave the game so I exited the realm and used a nearby save-point. A day later i jumped back into the game to complete the trial only to discover that the gate to Farore's Silent Realm no longer exists. The butterflies are gone, my ability to track it down with dowsing is gone, and the game will no longer progress.

Did I break the game? Do I have to start over? Or will completing some side-quest open up the realm again? Inquiring minds wish to know!

No, they don't. You forget, the Wii has like 512 MB of internal space. Not that that's an excuse for the lack of patching, but...Nintendo is retarded. They keep gimping themselves with stupid decisions to lag behind technology that end up making serious problems for them later (DS only able to access WEP networks, Wii has limited processing power and can't run modern games, etc.)
