Sledgehammer Games Working On Call of Duty "Action-Adventure"

Also, Treyarch's officially up this year.

Glen A. Schofield - The new face of Call of Duty?
Glen A. Schofield - The new face of Call of Duty?
"Jason West and Vince Zampella are no longer with Infinity Ward." That's the official statement from Activision about yesterday's dismissal. That line is buried in a press release focusing on the future of the Call of Duty series along with these other things:

What?

One Vincent Caravella, when presented with this information, immediately said "so, they're making God of Warfare?" But you can hear that for yourself on tonight's podcast.

Additionally, Activision is forming a new business unit around the Call of Duty franchise to combine resources and bring to COD "the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit." But so far, all of this is starting to sound more like Guitar Hero circa 2009 than anything Blizzard's been doing lately.

Editor's note: The original version of this article misinterpreted the releasse to mean that Sledgehammer's COD game would be released in 2011. No release date for this product has been announced. Giant Bomb regrets the error.

It's starting to sound like activision is attempting to usurp control over the CoD franchise even though it's technically still at least some what owned by IW.  IW works under contracts for Activision, and when that contract ends, I suspect long legal battles to ensue over who gets to control the CoD franchise.  The IW bosses may have objected to these plans Activision made concerning the future of their involvement in CoD.  Perhaps IW was attempting to NOT renew their contract in October.

This strategy of making franchises or "brands" is so shortsighted. I might be a completely ignorant idiot about the game industry but this could not be good for the long term success, can it? Quality will always  quantity in the long term. As someone who follows the industry as a fan, I am just sad. Bring something new to the table guys, and you will be rewarded-

This, gentlemen, is the beginning of the end for Call of Duty.  Maybe not the end of the popular Modern Warfare sub-franchise, but CoD without the MW subtitle will henceforth suck.

Looks like EA's medal of honor reboot is looking a lot more appealing now...which is great cuz I've been looking for a way not to buy anything that activision puts out.

There has also been rumblings that IW have not been receiving royalties for MW2. I wouldn't be surprised if the top brass at IW were stalling the DLC because of it. Holding it for ransom, as it were. Activision are making turn of the century EA look like saints.

Activision is thinking so far ahead they aren't even gonna wait til they run the COD franchise into the ground before dismantling it from the inside.

So if Bobby Kotick is truly the anti-Christ of video games as he is setting himself up to be, hopefully this mess (and all the other recent Activision-related scandals) will keep other developers from falling into this trap.  At least, that's the only silver lining I'm able to find in this situation.

I hope west and that other dude end up at some studio that lets them have complete free reign and a phat budget. Then they make MW3 and it pwns faces. Cause from the looks of this, COD is on track to be the new sonic, or at least an EA-type game.

yea their gonna drag the company thats about to release Another world of warcraft expansion, Starcraft 2, and diablo 3, down with them. Pfttt hahaha nooo. Blizzard has so much money, even if everything they did for the rest of gaming history only sold 1 copy, they could keep those rolls of hundreds they use as toilet paper in the office.

This is so not correct it is incorrect.  Activision owns Infinity Ward and Call of Duty with it.  There is no contract between Infinity Ward and Activision because Activision owns everything.  Activision can do whatever they want with either the franchise or the company and that is why they kicked Jason and Vince's asses to the curb.

The people that helped flood and break the Music Game industry now return for the sequel, killing off any interest anyone has in modern warfare games. Did they learn nothing from this last year? I can't wait for Kotick's 2011 speech where he reflects "Yeah, firing the heads of IW was a bad idea, and we flooded the market with b-grade games, but I'm not a dick, really!"

@MaddProdigy: I'm not talking about money here.

I do think Blizzard is in a pretty solid position, since it's a development AND publishing house.

I'm just not sure how much leverage Vivendi or Blizzard has over Activision to prevent any pressure.

If Activision loses sales on Call of Duty just like they did with Guitar Hero, the only thing left for them is Blizzard.

You can see the problem there, if Activision decides then to pressure Blizzard, things are probably going to get ugly.

This current IW incident and Activision's over milking of the Call of Duty franchise shows how short sighted and ruthless they are. Who knows what they might do.

I look forward to the new version of the CoD cycle.

New CoD gets announced
-Fans eagerly anticipate it
-Hopes are raised that all the old problems are fixed
-Bowling is 'excited'

More information is released
-Multiplayer has been made even more unbalanced
-The developer promises that they will be sorted by launch
-In the lead up to launch even mor MP tweaks are revealed that read well on paper
-Bowling still excited

Game is Launched
-SP is derided as populist, derivative but the shooting mechanics are OK even if the plot makes Dan Brown appear like a shoe-in for the next Booker prize
-The multiplayer is still unbalanced, mainly by all the crap that looked good in other games and Activision wanted to shoehorn in
-Developer promises to fix the problems but are always one step behind
-Bowling sympathises with the gamers but still excited

Treyarch Sneak out the next CoD using the same engine
-Bowling is just as surprised as we are
-The single player is no more outlandish than their previous efforts
-Anything unbalanced in the MP is nixed
-It's not great, it's not crap, everyone wins

Activision gets a new developer onto the CoD franchise

Cycle repeats

I in no way care for Call of Duty, but an Action adventure game? Base off an FPS Franchise? I have my doubts here, but I'll keep an eye out. At least to watch them fall. This was not a smart move.

So if they burn down the Call of Duty tree doesn't that leave them with no uber-franchises outside of Blizzard, who I barely consider Activision. Because Guitar Hero is nearly dead, Tony Hawk has been dead for a while. It just leaves licensed games after that. I would guess that if they don't come up with another super-popular IP within the next couple years they are kind of screwed, not finished but screwed.
