'Small Number' of Xbox 360s Have Borked Disc Drives [UPDATED]

Update makes some Xbox 360s unable to read retail discs. Woops, have a free Xbox 360!

Getting a free Xbox 360 S ain't that bad.
Getting a free Xbox 360 S ain't that bad.

UPDATE: This one just got a tad more confusing. Stay with me here!

Microsoft has not responded to my request for comment on today's reports about disc drives, but Eurogamer's gotten more. The issue has nothing to do with the upcoming firmware update but, as it turns out, a previous update.

"Additionally, this disc read error message is tied to a change in the disc reading algorithms in a recent software update and is not specific to older or newer versions of Xbox 360," the company said in a statement.

As such, if you haven't had an issue with your machine playing retail discs so far, you're out of luck when it comes to getting a brand-new Xbox.

--

The spring update for Xbox Live is imminent, bringing an important security change to the way Xbox 360 machines read discs, freeing up a substantial amount of space to developers on each disc. The update breaks the ability for a "very small number" of Xbox 360s to read retail discs, however, prompting Microsoft to reach out to affected consumers, offering them a replacement Xbox 360 S.

== TEASER ==

Kotaku first broke the news, based on an email received by an Xbox Live user. You can imagine their surprise. Xbox Support's Twitter account then verified the email, based on other folks receiving similar emails, were true. Microsoft then released a statement to Eurogamer, elaborating on the issue itself.

"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," the company said. "This issue manifests itself a as a unique 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console."

I've contacted Microsoft separately for more information but have yet to hear back. Let me know if you've heard from Microsoft. My Xbox 360 is several years old, but I've heard nothing from them yet.

I love that Microsoft breaks their 360s and everyone is happy about the possibility as they get a replacement out of it.

I have an Elite, but I wouldn't mind a replacement S.

My launch day 360 has actually never RRoD'd. I haven't used it in months (bought an Elite to get HDMI, etc), but I fired it up just now.

Mine sounds more like a vacuum cleaner is having relations with a Sand Person, but that may just be productions variances.

judging by the majority of opinions to the welcome back program, MS probably could have got by by just offering marketplace copies of Shadowrun and Perfect Dark and been done with it.

Nice to see them go all out on this. Especially if one had a launch system, got that replaced for free, then get the replacement replaced with a slim 250GB.

My 360 is old hell and sounds suspiciously like an angry badger trapped in an exhaust. And honestly I'm just waiting for the day that I see that RROD. And if this disk read error should happen to me before my 360 rrod's then fine. A free slim for me.

Not updating until I've played a bit of LA Noire this weekend, bought my 360 on the launch so I guess it's a bigger risk it's gonna break since it's so old.

Right. This is a "new" issue. Whatever.

My 360 had this problem after about 100 hours of use, in 2006 or 2007 and it was CLEAR that the problem was a malfunctioning optical drive. Absolutely no doubt about it. When I reported it to Microsoft, they said it wasn't any sort of a known issue and wasn't going to be covered, so I basically had to buy a new box (yeah, I know there maybe could have been a way to replace it myself, but I'm not going to fuck with the guts of a console and risk an account ban).

So four or five years later, they finally acknowledge it? Fuck them.

We fear the inevitable. I've only RRoD'd once. *knock wood* But the replacement stopped reading discs entirely a couple years ago. (No E74 either)
It's not exactly bad for Microsoft to get older unreliable (and typically more moddable) hardware out of active use. As a software company with a mindset for upgrades, they aren't oblivious to the fact that their hardware runs have discrepancies that verge on defects.

Not really, it should be expected if they did something to your 360 that renders games unplayable. This is not something to applaud.

Say you have an old 360 and this update makes your 360 break. You get a free, brand new 360 S.

HOW IS THAT NOT SOMETHING TO APPLAUD. If anything it would make people HOPE it bricks their console as users have already pointed out in the thread.

More details would sure be nice. Is it only certain retail discs, and/or is there some way to identify if you have an affected xbox? 99% of my xbox's use these days is one or two particular discs, and lots of live arcade downloads, so if those couple of discs don't show the problem, will I have to start randomly loading up all my other games to find out if there's an issue?

The problem here doesn't sound like a malfunctioning optical drive.  This is a change to how information is read from the discs that, for some reason, causes some 360's to not recognize the discs as 360 discs(like putting a PS3 game in your Xbox).  From what you said about what happened to you it sounds like your optical drive just broke and the Xbox couldn't read the discs at all.

I'm not trying to comment on whether or not they should or shouldn't have replaced your Xbox. I'm just saying that your problem and the problem this article is about don't appear to be the same thing.

From what it says I think its your 360 wouldn't play any disc based game, so you'd know by now.

It's time to clarify things!  The plan to replace the console that is the subject of headlines today is related to a previous update and NOT update the system that was tested in public beta and will soon be deployed.

The new disc format that is part of the beta version has been rigorously tested in all models of Xbox 360 and there are no known compatibility issues.
I hope this clarifies things.

Clearing up some confusion

Clarification time! The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of today’s headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly.

I'm shocked that there are still people out there with systems old enough to not be compatible with this update. I've sent mine in for repairs (see replacement) for red ring on my main system at least 3 times and actually bought an elite later on down the line. Which also red ringed twice. The first time, I actually got a South American system back which wouldn't play US DVD. I didn't realize this until I got a call from MS telling be about the error though since I was also an early adopter of HD-DVD so I was playin them from that little doodad. Anyway, they offered to change it out immediately, but I told them I was fine, I'd just send it in once it broke again. We both had a laugh, then a few months later, I was sending my South American 360 back for RRoD.

Oh, and I bought an arcade system, and it red ringed the day of purchase. At least in that case, I could drive it back to gamestop and swap it that day rather than wait for shipping. All together, I must have had over 7 red ringed systems.

Funny thing is, my PS3 broke once and I had to pay some ridiculous amount to sony to get it fixed. I would rather send in my 360 7 times over a few years, than my PS3 once and have to pay for it.

I thought the big benefit of consoles was that they always just work and you never had to worry about the patching and software/firmware revisions?  My how things have changed.

Pathetic Microsoft.  Updating a piece of consumer electronics should be infrequent, not mandatory, and should never cause a malfunction in a single shipped unit.  Amateur hour.
