Sony Archived Last Night's The Last of Us Live Show

Now, if only we could convince Sony to do something for Journey...

To celebrate the launch of The Last of Us Remastered on PlayStation 4, Sony and Geoff Keighley put on a live performance yesterday featuring key scenes and musical selections from the game. In case you missed it, Sony archived it on YouTube. Just make sure to scrub past the 30-minute countdown someone forgot to delete.

I'm still confused as to why this story was realized as a video game if this is how Sony continues to celebrate it. Not to mention the critical tidal wave of praise for absolutely everything but the gameplay. Oh, and the movie is going to be a direct adaptation of Joel and Ellie's story.

I'm a little worried that the part of the industry that's trying so hard to be mature is also, in doing so, trying very hard to be like movies, in form as well as storytelling. Absolutely baffling.

There are also live performances of video-game and film soundtracks. Games are an all-encompassing medium that bring all sorts of arts together; just as it's fine to celebrate great art or music in a film, there's nothing wrong with celebrating good writing or performance in a game.

@jouhn: I completely I'm not saying the people who went, were no fans, but I mean When Neil directly is saying this was the goodbye to Joel and Ellie, they should not have made it a limited thing. If they had made something, that was just a little goodie for the People that went, then I would have been fine with, But when he directly say this was the end, thx to the fans, and then not showing it to the rest of us. That is was rubs me the wrong Way. And then they make such a Big number out of saying it Will never be released.

@elwood: Really weird to think that Neil only wanted those who attended to experience what is basically the epilogue to TLOU and the absolute end of their story.

I'm hoping a leak will appear somewhere, or have Neil eventually release it to the public, because it definitely sounds like something that all TLOU fans want to see because the relationship between Joel and Ellie is something extremely special for those who played and loved, rather than those who were able to see the thing live.

You're a bit late to be concerned about this. Metal Gear Solid came out 16 years ago, and most people loved it. Gaming didnt change for the worse because of it. And the simple fact is most developers dont have the budget to do this kind of thing so it's not like it's going to oversaturate the medium.

I love games that play well more than anything. But i'm glad games like this exist. And I hope there are more shows that celebrate games, whether it be theatrical or CG or whatever else best suits the game on display.

God. It's the "Broadway-ification" of video games happening before our eyes. Next, all video games will be community theater.

So what was the special thing at the end? Surely not just the trailer right?

Putting it in spoiler just to be safe

It was from AFTER the final scene in the game. In the scene, Ellie is in her room at Tommy's place, listening to her iPod/CD player etc. Joel enters the room and wants to talk to Ellie. He brings out a guitar and sings a song(Troy Baker played the guitar AND sang in the voice. Fucking amazing). Joel shares a joke that he tells Ester, a woman he's now dating from the camp, with Ellie. "What's the bad thing about eating a clock? It's time consuming." They laugh, Joel leaves the room, and Ellie strums a string. End scene, end journey...perhaps.

—————-

The scene takes place at Tommy dam one night 4 years later. Joel talks about how Tommy trying to get Joel hitched to a girl named Esther. El lies acting fairly distant, probably conflicted about joels lie. Joel then said he has a special gift for her and busts out a guitar. Then he plays a special song for her. Then he gives her guitar and promises to teach her. The scene ends with her striking a note on the guitar

——————-

Neil also said before the scene is a goodbye to Joel and ellie.

Neil wrote the scene a few weeks ago, and revealed it to Geoff Keighley, before the finished up on the preperations for this event.

Here is a picture of it.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Btu-KYJCIAICuvT.jpg:large

And it will not be made public, and Neil asked people not to film it, they wanted it to be something special for the people who went there.

The only thing I find a bit sad here is, this was the goodbye to Joel and Ellie as Neil said, and it's a shame that all the other TLOU fans don't get's to see it.

I was impressed how well the acting talent held up live, if you consider that the cutscenes in the game were pieced together from multiple performances and hand-tweaked by animators it is quite impressive that it mostly holds up when set on a stage.

Hana Hayes got a little short changed with a single scene at the beginning but it makes sense that they didn't do her final scene live. If you've seen the Grounded documentary you know it was absolutely the hardest scene to shoot for Troy Baker.

It's no surprise to hear that it translates well to theatre, given how often motion capture acting is compared to theatre more so than film or TV. Looking forward to checking this out! It apparently includes an epilogue scene that was cut from the main game.

This is a much better fit for video games than film, sure you could make a great film based on a video game but i think you get a more personal experience this way and can show the all the great bits from it plus having the composer doing is music makes shine more. Watched all of it and would definitely pay to go and watch it live.
