Sony Confirms its Own 'Online Pass,' Starting With Resistance 3

No confirmation of branding or details on pricing structure and what's getting locked away.

If Sony's making the dive into the Online Pass initiative, will Microsoft follow?
If Sony's making the dive into the Online Pass initiative, will Microsoft follow?

Over the holiday weekend, there was growing evidence Sony would be starting an "Online Pass" program, a way of combating the rise of used game sales, with a similarly titled "PSN Pass."

The basic idea is locking some (or all) online content behind a code included with new copies of a game. When redeemed, that code's useless. If a consumer turns in that game to GameStop, whoever purchases it used will have to purchase another code to access the locked content. In general, purchasing a new Online Pass has cost $10.

Beginning with Resistance 3, Sony will have their own variation of this, the company has confirmed. The original rumor, based on some leaked packaging from overseas, dubbed it PSN Pass, but Sony made no reference to that name in today's statement.

"We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering," said the company, "and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities. This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title. This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio."

There are some key phrases in this statement.

One, "game-specific." Right now, Sony's not willing to say this will extend to all of its upcoming releases, which include a multitude of multiplayer-centric games, like Twisted Metal and Uncharted 3. However, "instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities" suggests it's definitely on the table.

Two, "full online access." That doesn't exactly detail what will or won't be locked away.

Three, "network pass program." Sounds like "PSN Pass" may not be the final name.

We also don't know how much a new code will cost, but given how this statement is reactionary, caused by an oversight on Sony's part, the lack of details is hardly surprising. If the company's willing to say something is in the works today, though, an official announcement should be coming soon.

Pretty sure this is for Sony published games  only. Not every game being released that has MP for PSN

I always buy new and never resell, so a problem this is not. Really, good for them, finally focusing on the bigger enemy instead of freaking pirates.

More "fuck the consumer" innovation. Have more than one gamer in the household? You get to pay us more money! You know, the same way you have to pay extra money for cable if you have two viewers in the household. Or how you have to pay double for a music CD or DVD if there is more than one person in the household.

I don't think it works that way. Last time I used one of these it hooked up to my psn, so any system that had my psn registered could play online.

Dont know if that speaks for all of the different online passes though...

Not surprising however for games Like Uncharted losing the online mode isn't that much of a pain (Always felt the MP was tacked on) however if there is games which have a good MP mode people will probably just wait until a price drop and then pick it up then.

It's not hard to do and also it gives people a chance to see if there is an active community for the game and what people are saying in user reviews.

I think Dice's/EA's solution with BFBC2's passcode was perfect. Everyone could still play online but with the code you gradually got more maps and modes that people without the code would want. I think many companies are simply trying to lock the entire mp side of the game up so that people have to pay them to get access. I'm a heavy used game trader and I don't think I've ever purchased one of these codes. I rarely see the point. I have picked up new copies of games that had the codes, homefront comes to mind, but when I get a used copy of something it feels like a scam to pay them to let me play the MP of a game they've already been paid for. I'm getting a copy of MK for the 360 soon and I might spend $10 on that pass...but again...is it really worth $10? I keep coming back with "NO" and moving to another game.

If they were to add content with that code then I'd feel differently but as long as they just want ppl to pay them for something they've already been paid for I think this just works against them. The person who bought the game and traded it to me isn't playing with that pass anymore...it's not like you have to suddenly support 2 ppl playing the game, there is only one copy of the game being played.

From ea's FAQ

Do I need an unique Online Pass for every user on my console?
No.  One Online Pass will give online access to multiple users logged into the console where the Online Pass was first activated (subject to the console manufacturer’s and EA online terms of service).

Also, the user that activated the Online Pass will be allowed to access online features on other consoles (of the same manufacturer) by logging into the same account credentials that they used when they enabled the Online Pass.

What happens if I play at a friend’s console?
If you have purchased Online Pass access or redeemed a code for free access on one console, you can use your access on any other console.  To do so, sign in using your Xbox LIVE gamertag or PSN ID persona on your friend’s console when playing online.

What happens if my console dies or is lost or stolen?
If you have already redeemed the code from your game manual or purchased Online Pass access, you will be able to access online features from any console using the same Xbox 360 gamertag or PlayStation 3 persona.  You may need to go to the ‘my downloaded content’ section in Xbox LIVE Marketplace or PSN Store to re-download your EA SPORTS Online Pass.

Buy all my games new, doesn't bother me, etc. etc.

It's almost as if everyone complaining has never played a PC game before. You have no choice BUT to buy a game new on PC, especially now that things like Steamworks have been introduced.

Seriously, there are enough sales on new titles (or store credit offered through Amazon and Best Buy, etc.) that I can't think of a logical reason you would buy a game used at retail.

I think installing and maintaining a game on a console is more complicated than on a PC these days.  Pretty funny watching the snake eat itself.

I fail to see how this is bad or how the PS3 is worse than the 360 because of this.
I think they have some right to get something from second hand sales and they don't lock out dire content or lock you out of a way to get it.

This is on 360 also, so that argument is stupid.

@benjaebe: Only reason I could see is if you are wanting a older title that is no longer in print.  If I wanted a copy of say....  Silent Hill 2 on the PS2 your only choice is to really scour the used game market to find it.    As far as games within 1-2 years of printing  I agree with you as I buy all my games new.

i hate people who buy used games, i understand that not everybody has the money to buy every game they want but by buying it used your fucking over the dev, and supporting gamestop, eb games, blockbuster but in a wrong way, they should not make money that way by making a profit on something they have allready sold once and have a huge profit on.

i was in a gamestop not to long ago, and i saw a used game being sold for roughly 2$ less then the retail game. it was mw 2, and the retail price was rougly 55$ i mean come on that game was release on november 2009 and only dropped 5 bucks from retail price, god i hate gamestop,

To people who argue in favour of this bullshit by saying that developers are getting ripped off by the used game market:

There is absolutely no proof that the person who buys Resistance 3 used for 20 bucks would have bought it at all if he had been forced to buy it new. Developers are NOT just automatically being denied a sale, and buying into that argument is just stupid.

i thought this was already happening in games, Homefront locks you at level six unless you enter the code to unlock the rest of the online features, or you can buy an online pass on xbla marketplace, LA Noire another game with an online pass for more content which you have to pay for, Mortal kombat again same deal, althought both MK and LA Noire with these passes your getting the dlc already paid for. I can see this catching on as we are being subjected to it already.

I don't give a fuck what they want. I already bought the game. I shouldn't have to pay $10 more so my roommate can play the game, too. The same way I shouldn't have to buy another copy of a book, movie, CD, cable subscription, internet subscription, or other service or consumable just because there might be more than one person in my household who might utilize it.

Books, movies and music don't have an extremely short shelf life, they don't become obsolete at anywhere near the rate of videogames. They generally don't rely on server based, 24/7 uptime technologies to be enjoyed. Cable subscriptions do require an extra cost per box and transfer. You're ranting like a crazy person again.

This doesn't matter.  I still see the new games on the market drop to
$20 & they'll still have their fucking codes.  It takes a couple years to
dump inventory & the longer the wait, the more money you get in
your pocket for those so-so games.  For games that you absolutely
must have, you'll be putting forth the $60 anyway, so it won't matter.
Don't know how popular Resistance 3 is to justify it.  Those on the
fence will simply wait.

I don't really see the problem with this. I either buy games near release or wait for them to drop to $20-$30 on amazon. I never buy used anymore. And chances are those games I wait for price drops on, I don't really care about their multiplayer.

Online passes giving extra incentive buying new by providing extra content = good. Online passes requiring you to pay money to play online = fucking dumb. Glad i got rid of my ps3 when they had the security breach.

Considering 360 owners already pay to play online, i hope they would see how terrible of an idea it would be to charge to play online for a used game...that you would already be paying to play online.

Comments like these ones which are supporting this scam on the behalf of publishers are fucking hilarious. When the industry is doing anything it is doing so because of the profit motive; anything they do, they do to make money. But for some reason when it comes to consumers, all the corporate dick suckers ask us to "have a heart" or "get a little perspective".

Fuck. That.

If the game is cheaper used than it is new  then the obvious move by me as a consumer is to buy the cheaper alternative. Publishers want me to buy new? Then either release the games for cheaper (which probably wouldn't change anything unless the price cuts were deep enough) or determine a legitimate way of making the new product a more attractive buy then the used product.

Yeah, I used to punch in CD Keys when I played PC games ten years ago. Back when PC games set the standard for games.

Now console games set the standard and ... yeah, CD keys. Wait I'm... I'm not... am I supposed to be upset? This isn't new. Console games have taken cues from all the PC (consider what online console multiplayer meant 10 years ago) and this is just another one.

Add to this, Giant Bomb and the video game community in general only pay lipservice to their ideas of 'consumer freedom'. They spill hours of their lives in useless internet frustration, and then actively travel to a store (or internet storefront), go buy the thing they hate, grumbling and mumbling all the while about how they're being taken advantage of. I don't want to make any crass sexual assault analogies, but Christ dude. Shut up and stop buying games. Please. Leave them to those of us who know what a dollar is worth. Or at least just shut up, I'm sick of hearing the entitled bullshit.

@RsistncE: The producers of the games are under no obligation to support a used market. If they want to CD key their games to eliminate all used sales, they can do it. The only reason the cheaper alternative even exists is because they've tried to be lenient, and they completely don't have to. PC publishers figured this out a decade ago.

As you said, they're driven by profit. The only way they can achieve profit is by designing a game people want at a price they're willing to pay. And nowhere in there is there some magical fairy law that says they have to coddle Gamestop.

All games go CD key, I don't care. All my Steam games are locked to my profile, it's never bothered my ass.

Gaming companies need money to pay their employee's, there is nothing wrong with what Sony is doing here. I have always hated the on-going war of Pre-owned vs. New. If your going to buy it used, get used to the fact that you need to send some money the developers way.

@Brodehouse: It doesn't bother me either...what bothers me is people trying to get us to side with publishers. Fact of the matter is that eliminating the used game market might be incredibly harmful to those same publishers since used games provide people with a cheaper way of obtaining games because let's be realistic here...$60 is too expensive for most people, so trade ins bring those games into the reach of those who don't have that much cash to drop at every release. Either way, the market will sort itself out; I believe publishers will be hit pretty heavily by their own stupidity one way or another.

Do many people actually pay $60? A year of gold goes on sale for $35-$40 all the time and there have been a ton of deals on the dashboard like $1 for a month, sometimes letting you buy up to 6 at a time. Paying $60 for gold is like paying the sticker price on a car or mattress. It's a silly thing to do.

I pay 100$ a year for 4 live accounts.

Gamestop's return policy on used games allows you to return any used game within 7 days of purchase, provided that you still have the receipt. You get all of your money back, in cash(or whatever you used to pay for it).
As a result, I now buy most single-player games used from Gamestop, then return them.
Yes, I know it's bad for the industry. But, I don't make enough money to play all the games that I want to play, so this is an adequate solution for me.

Real innovative making console players enter a code to play their game they have paid for. They might as well lock the whole game to completely kill used game sales and so they can enable the customers to download their redeemed games if they sit on their disc. Games should be completely downloadable in this day and age, but available as cards in shop and optionally as discs so you don't have to wait for them to download.
