Sony GDC: More on Move

The PlayStation Move will be out later this year and will sell for under 100 bucks. Also, Sony's answer to Wii Sports revealed!

Peter Dille
Peter Dille
Here's more from Sony's GDC press conference.

Peter Dille, Sony's senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network, took to the stage second at the company's GDC press conference to cover some details on Sony's upcoming motion controller, PlayStation Move.

The Move will be released in multiple configurations.

  • Controller-only for users that already own a PlayStation Eye
  • PlayStation Move Starter Kit: A PS Eye, a controller, and a game.
  • PlayStation 3 Bundle: All of above, plus a PS3.

The starter kit is going to sell for under $100. A "PlayStation Move Sub-Controller" will also be available. SOCOM 4 will work with this add-on controller. It's... you know... a Nunchuk.

Dille then introduced Scott Rodhe, VP of product development at Sony's Worldwide Studios to discuss specifics. They first showed a game called Sports Champions, which sounds like a minigame compiliation, as they went on to show a sub-mode called Gladiator Duel. This showed a sword-and-shield gladiator battle that takes place from a behind-the-back perspective. This uses two motion controllers at the same time.

Sports Champions, which is looking more and more like Sony's answer to Wii Sports, also has a table tennis game. It's hard to get a good feel for it from the video feed, but it appears to be pretty natural.

Move Party is another minigame collection, but it looks a lot more like the EyeToy games of old by showing a video feed of the player on-screen. But instead of just flipping out with your body to play the games, it'll track the Move controller for painting, fly-swatting, haircutting, and the like.

LittleBigPlanet will receive an update that adds Move controller support to the game. The demo shown is a two-player mode, but instead of two sack people, one player uses the Motion controller to grab and manipulate specific materials to create bridges and solve puzzles. EyePet will also be available in some form of Move-enabled state this holiday season.

Motion Fighters is a bare-knuckle, one-on-one fighting game that reads two Move controllers as you beat the crap out of another guy from a behind-the-back perspective. Spinning backfists, uppercuts, headlocks, and other moves are all possible. Looks like a workout.

Looked like playing a shooter on the...um...what's it called? That Nintendo console...oh right the Wii!

Motion controls have been done, why is Sony trying to make it seem like it's a new thing? This is just motion plus on another console.

It at least appeared to be responsive and fluid. It was a better first demonstration than Natal, that's for sure.

It still seemed like set animations for specific movements, which is not true 1:1, as they made it seem. Regardless, even if it was 1:1, I still wouldn't care because there is no tactile feedback with these controls, in turn making it feel dry and empty.

agreed. even with the supposed 1:1 correlation,  you're still trying to make contact with objects that are 5+ feet away in 2.5D space...

I don't really know what to think of it. It is kind of neat, though not far off of what the Wii's been doing for going on 4 years now. But a lot of it just seems inconvenient and unnecessary to me.  A table tennis game? Sure, even though I can get a perfectly serviceable one for the Wii, I'll take it. The LittleBigPlanet level manipulation? Ok, that's kind of neat, but again unnecessary. Socom with motion controls? Hell no. I don't want to play a shooter with tacked on motion controls. That's dumb. If that were the case, the Wii version of Call of Duty would be the most-played & best selling. But it's not.

This means games that were previously exclusive to the Wii by design don't have that intrinsic limitation.  That means we can see motion controller games (plus with camera stuff maybe) with higher fidelity graphics.  I think it's a smart move on Sony's part to play both Microsoft's and Nintendo's markets to provide a happy middle.  Free online but not amazing service, 3rd party games on par with 360's quality, a very good roster of exclusive titles, and now a casual market entry with a possibility to add functionality to otherwise controller-only games.

I like it (although the name could have been better.  Abbreviated, PSM is going to be confusing, unless people are going to call it "the Move" which is weird.  Not horrible like the Wii but not good either".

Too similar to the Wii-mote for mine. So what if it's 100x more accurate, Motion Plus hasn't been a game changer for the Wii.

PS3 will be home to the Wii's shovel-ware, like 360 will follow with Natal.

These "catchy name that describes the device/software" words that apple popularized (TIme Machine, iPad) work a lot better when they don't sound like a demand.

You mirror my opinions exactly. The movement seems realistic and all. And yes having a motion controller in shooters is dumb the Wii has proven that again and again. hope that the crew let us know their opinion soon.

Can you haters please stow it? For one, Move is optional. You don't have to buy it, you don't have to use it. Even with it being in games like Socom 4, that's completely optional also. Fact of the matter is, this is a huge market for Sony. If they manage to do this a lot like the Wii, but better, they are going to sell gangbusters, and make a lot of money.
I have a friend who's wife won't let them buy a PS3 because it's not really kid, or family friendly. Not as much as the Wii anyway. I have no doubt that after I tell them about this, and show it to them, they are immediately going to buy a PS3. That's the type of thing Move is going to do. Most of it is going to cater to a specific "Wii-type audience" which doesn't really do anything for me, or most of the people here at Giantbomb. But don't make the mistake of thinking this isn't going to be a huge thing for Sony, and draw in a ton of people. Sony knows what they are doing, and when this pulls in a ton of money, they will be able to spend more resources on other things. Things that you and I will care about.

Even if this type of thing isn't really your cup of tea. I'm sure there will still be an occasional game that you will enjoy. Most of the stuff on the Wii is garbage, and not for me, but I still enjoy me some Wii Sports Resort every now and again.

Basically, just let it play out. This doesn't effect you negatively in any way. It's just more options, and that's never a bad thing.

It looks like the Wii but yo, that thing was hella times more responsive.

Of course anything motion control gets a backlash -- so look forward to God Of War III again. This is all totally optional stuff.

Looked alright to me though. Eager to see more and what people on the floor think of it.

Anybody who thinks Socom with the Move is a bad idea hasn't played Metroid on the Wii. It's not a tacked on gimmick, it's an enhancement that improves precision. I loved playing that damn game, I can't wait to have that same experience on an HD console finally.

Oh and... "Hahah, it's like a dildo! I'm the first person to make that joke ever, right?" I'm so sick of that shit. It's OK to chuckle to yourself if you think something looks like a phallus, but if you still penis jokes out loud whenever you see something long and cylindrical, and think you're being creative and funny, you need to grow-the-fuck up.

Pretty much 90% of the people commenting here need to realise this totally isn't for you. Sony just wants to branch out into the Wii market they're not trying to enhance your hardcore experience or any shit like that the Socom thing was just for show...

That's why this thing looks just like the Wii, they're trying to get the same people but it's totally not going to work. Everyone who can afford a Wii already has one and the PS3 is more expensive so...who exactly is going to buy it? Beats me.

Also if you think $100 is expensive I guarantee Natal will cost just as much if not substantially more.

All of this 'ripping off of the wii'

First of all- eyetoy says hi

Second of all, they showcased 'their' version of wii million sellers, cos y'know they sold millions on the wii - im really not sure what people are expecting?
Its a piece of hardware and a small selection of software you can take or leave - dont like motion controls (like me) dont get one -simple.
At least they actually showed something - and it looked much smoother and and more advanced than the wiimote, and since they actually showed something, it's already steps ahead of natal - which to this point, still might as well not exist - because by the time it's released it's going to be nothing like people are expecting.

And anyone who seriously believes this is going to "sell gangbusters" is deluding themselves.

This has a bunch of shit going wrong for it:

1) One HUNDRED dollars.
2) Totally optional. Third parties will drop this thing like it's hot once their obligatory "okay Sony fine we'll make ONE GAME with motion control for you" contract is up. Remember the Sixaxis? Remember how you threw grenades in Uncharted 1? Remember how fast THAT shit got dropped?
3) A sports compilation and a party game? Is that what you've got? Why would anyone buy a PS3 and this motion controller nonsense with the camera and the controllers and the games when they could just buy a Wii for a hundred and fifty dollars less and get the exact same experience?
4) One HUNDRED dollars.

"It's the Wii but more expensive and more complicated" is not going to sell to ANYONE.

HA! HD Corn Flakes! That's great!
I go back and forth on the matter. I liked the demo that was shown at last year's E3 with the sword and shield. I like the responsiveness of it if the game's tailor made to support the 1:1 movement. Seems like it'll be much better than the Wii's motion controls. I guess it all comes down to the games released for it for me. Time will tell.

cool... we don't need motion controllers. we need new IPs company, not motion controllers. microsoft and sony are just companying nintendo because of how successful the wii was. a lot of people are wii in paper weight mode. my friend sold his because he was playing more 360 than wii.
