Sony GDC: More on Move

The PlayStation Move will be out later this year and will sell for under 100 bucks. Also, Sony's answer to Wii Sports revealed!

Peter Dille
Peter Dille
Here's more from Sony's GDC press conference.

Peter Dille, Sony's senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network, took to the stage second at the company's GDC press conference to cover some details on Sony's upcoming motion controller, PlayStation Move.

The Move will be released in multiple configurations.

  • Controller-only for users that already own a PlayStation Eye
  • PlayStation Move Starter Kit: A PS Eye, a controller, and a game.
  • PlayStation 3 Bundle: All of above, plus a PS3.

The starter kit is going to sell for under $100. A "PlayStation Move Sub-Controller" will also be available. SOCOM 4 will work with this add-on controller. It's... you know... a Nunchuk.

Dille then introduced Scott Rodhe, VP of product development at Sony's Worldwide Studios to discuss specifics. They first showed a game called Sports Champions, which sounds like a minigame compiliation, as they went on to show a sub-mode called Gladiator Duel. This showed a sword-and-shield gladiator battle that takes place from a behind-the-back perspective. This uses two motion controllers at the same time.

Sports Champions, which is looking more and more like Sony's answer to Wii Sports, also has a table tennis game. It's hard to get a good feel for it from the video feed, but it appears to be pretty natural.

Move Party is another minigame collection, but it looks a lot more like the EyeToy games of old by showing a video feed of the player on-screen. But instead of just flipping out with your body to play the games, it'll track the Move controller for painting, fly-swatting, haircutting, and the like.

LittleBigPlanet will receive an update that adds Move controller support to the game. The demo shown is a two-player mode, but instead of two sack people, one player uses the Motion controller to grab and manipulate specific materials to create bridges and solve puzzles. EyePet will also be available in some form of Move-enabled state this holiday season.

Motion Fighters is a bare-knuckle, one-on-one fighting game that reads two Move controllers as you beat the crap out of another guy from a behind-the-back perspective. Spinning backfists, uppercuts, headlocks, and other moves are all possible. Looks like a workout.

Naw, that'd be you. This is actually a brilliant move on Sony's part.

You can either pay 200 bucks for a Wii, or you can pay 400 bucks for a PS3 slim, a game, Move, and the PS Eye. As well as something that also plays adult games, can stream HD Netflix movies, can play Blurays, etc. Anyone that knows anything about technology is going to know that this is way more bang for their buck. And like I mentioned, there are a ton of families out there that won't buy a PS3 because they feel like it's a purely "adult" platform. This is going to get rid of that stigma completely. With one purchase, they will have something for everyone. Movies for everyone, mature games for the dad, silly games for the kids, family games to give everyone something to do together...

This is going to sell well. There is no doubt. Once it comes out, and does end up doing terrific. I want you to remember my name, and picture me saying "I told you so."

This has a bunch of shit going wrong for it:

1) One HUNDRED dollars.
2) Totally optional. Third parties will drop this thing like it's hot once their obligatory "okay Sony fine we'll make ONE GAME with motion control for you" contract is up. Remember the Sixaxis? Remember how you threw grenades in Uncharted 1? Remember how fast THAT shit got dropped?
3) A sports compilation and a party game? Is that what you've got? Why would anyone buy a PS3 and this motion controller nonsense with the camera and the controllers and the games when they could just buy a Wii for a hundred and fifty dollars less and get the exact same experience?
4) One HUNDRED dollars.  "It's the Wii but more expensive and more complicated" is not going to sell to ANYONE. "
Stop being such a damn troll. $100 isn't bad considering it's coming with a $50 PSeye and a game. And hell it could actually be less than $99.99, they never dropped the exact price besides the fact that it'll be below $100.

Excellent, if only they met sooner. Maybe the Wii could have taught the Eye Toy how to be successful.

No. Natal will not cost more because you want it to. If you bothered to research, you would know that Natal is, in all likelihood, going to cost $80.

Well what do you expect when people are bashing this for no reason? It's like me bashing the 360 just because of Natal. The damn thing is optional, it doesn't effect me any. So it would be completely absurd for me to condemn the entire system because of some peripheral it has.

This might be a radical thought, but sometimes something does need defending, and the person defending it isn't always necessarily biased in some way. Also, getting on a forum and calling other people "fanboys" has become so cliche, it's really sad and pathetic at this point. It's gotten to where a person can't even show up and casually say "Yeah, I enjoy the PS3" or "I enjoy the 360" without someone immediately responding with "DIE YOU STINKING FANBOY!!!111!11111"

Main controller shoulda had a stick on it.  With one of those in each hand you could actually implement something different and interesting.

"Gladiator Duel" but with ~8 people running around, with a ton of different weapons and customized persistent characters would be totally awesome.  Two people locked in place slugging it out is decidedly unawesome.

The Sony Defense force sounds alot like the Wii Defense force in this thread, and it's probably what the Natal Defense force are going to sound like when that comes out.  These things will not find mainstream success, they will be moderately sucessfull add-ons at best.

I guess it all comes down to the games released for it for me. Time will tell. "

And I want a screen cap of me telling you the exact opposite.

It's not going to appeal to casual gamers, they already have the Wii.  Sony coming out with exactly the same thing isn't going to win them over, and the fact the PS3 is capable of a whole lot more than what the Wii is on top of that doesn't matter to them.  Look at the MP3 player market, for example.  It doesn't matter if a really amazing mp3 player comes out that can do everything the iPod does and more, Apple have the brand recognition and that's what people want.

And despite this press release, I see nothing about this that will attract "hardcore gamers" either.  It's something a few people may buy thinking it'll be great, use for about a week and then never touch again.  At best, I see it selling alright.  But much like the Eyetoy, support will dry up fast.

Natal at least is doing something a little more original, it isn't just Microsoft's version of the Wii, and while it may be less precise, it's capable of things neither of the other two can do and MS have some of their biggest studios focusing on it and it alone.  Again, I see it mainly being directed at casual gamers, but I can at least see Natal aspects being integrated into all games, as well as certain genre's really taking advantage of it..  Particular the RTS'.  They're not trying to pretend it's something that will be used by everyone, for everything.

Well, that's where I win and you lose. Because I guarantee at least 2 people will buy this! VICTORY IS MINE!

Also, are you going to freak out when Natal costs 100 dollars? Because it most likely will. You and I both know that 100 bucks for the Playstation camera, the Move controller, and a game is not that much. People constantly drop 100 bucks on stupid collectors edition for a single game that, more often then not, comes with useless junk. If people will spend 100 bucks on that, then they most definitely will spend 100 bucks on this.

In addition. To most people, a hundred bucks isn't all that much. I don't consider myself a rich, or even a semi-wealthy individual, and a hundred bucks doesn't really phase me. Maybe if you, I dunno, went and got a job, this wouldn't be a big deal to you? Or perhaps not spend over a hundred bucks a month on fast food and soda? There's lots of ways to easily accrue 100 dollars.

To be honest, you haters and doomsayers sound like the exact people Jeff is always calling out. Move might not be some revolutionary thing that's going to blow everybody's mind, and sell 500 million units, but it's also not saying that isn't going to "appeal to casual gamers." It's not something that's going to flop. It's not even something that won't make a decent amount of money for Sony. As Jeff always says "The truth is somewhere in the middle." And that's the only point I'm trying to make.
I'm tired of all you haters that act like you know that it's going to completely fail. Like you have some inside scoop into the future. That's why I told you to stow it. This will do just fine. Sony will support it for many years into the future. It will have some neat games come out on it. Most of it probably won't appeal to core gamers like you and I, but there will still be some fun to be had with it. It will make Sony a decent amount of money. It will do just fine!

All this "doom and gloom" from you people sounds like 360 loyalists who are threatened by this, and want to bash it as much as possible in order to try and sabotage it.

Thank you for taking my quote completely out of context.

I specifically said that the thing will likely sell alright.  It's not going to be an utter flop, I just don't see it penetrating the market in the same way the Wii has.  But don't get me wrong, I don't expect Natal to do so either..  I just think it has an advantage of being able to play to its own specific strengths, where as Move is nothing but a complete clone of something we already have.

You are right, I musta skimmed over that part. Or misread it. Yeah, you aren't really the person I'm addressing. I'm more talking at these people are are already calling for the complete downfall of Move, and acting like they have some clairvoyance into the future, and somehow know it's going to flop.

Well, that's reasonable. Condemning an entire product because of an addon, or something "extra" that it has? I hope you are being sarcastic...   You know. I think I won't buy a 360 just because it had that HD-DVD addon. Or maybe I won't buy this MP3 player I was looking at just because it comes with these free, off brand batteries. Or maybe I won't ever eat at McDonalds just because I don't like fish sandwiches...

Hopefully that gets my point across... Honestly, where do you people come from with your completely absurd opinions? You are the pure definition of a "troll."

So? Most people bought a second Wii nunchuck, and remote. Which together ran like 60 bucks? Plus tax? Again, you people are making mountains out of mole hills. All in an attempt to bash something because..? I don't even know why. It's not something you have to buy. It's an extra, optional thing. You can pretend Playstation Move doesn't even exist if you want to. The only reason I can come up with is, as I said before, you are a 360 loyalists trying to bash something you feel threatened by in order to sabotage it before it even comes out.

No, it looks like a vibrator. Probably "rumbles" too.

Give it a break guys.

It's like the Wii HD, that can only be good if you're into the Wii. Besides, that Wii Sports rip-off seemed really fun, more fun than the real deal. Also, if they use move™ in LBP for level editing, that will be an amazing addition.

@Ragdrazi: Yeah, I might not buy it either. I'm on the fence. That still doesn't change the fact that you saying "the market doesn't want it" is sensational bullcrap. It's not your thing? Fine. You think it's stupid? Fine. But don't try and act like this doesn't have a place. Or that a lot of people won't buy it and enjoy it. Don't try and act like you somehow know for a fact that it's going to fail. Because you... are... WRONG! You don't know.

Honestly, I guess I just need to quit responding to you people. If the internet has proven anything, it's that people will always come in with their forceful, completely exaggerated, sensational comments, and try and pass them off as fact. Also, it has proven that people will spew their vitriol and hate towards any, and everything. Even towards something that they haven't even tried yet, and that hasn't even been released.

I guess I'll just never stop being disappointed by it.

@MAST: We are the market, Mast. Everyone here but you handful of valiant faithful are laughing at this.

The only downside I see with fighting games is not being able to kick.  I'm sure MS will exploit that the entire body is not being used and with Natal is it. That is unless Sony has something up it's sleeve to track leg and feet movements which they have not revealed.

That's actually a good point. How often are people clamoring and crying for HD capability on the Wii? And how often does Reggie say that "people don't want it." All the damn time. I swear, there is an article or comment about it in almost every Game Informer magazine I've gotten in the past year. Well, Sony is about to provide HD Wii gaming. To all you people saying that the Playstation Move doesn't have a market. Well... That's one already.

I was really impressed with the Socom 4 demo actually, the guy was calm, not flinging his arms everywhere and the kit was responding well, i still like my controller though.

@Ragdrazi: Umm, no. Giantbomb is absolutely not the market for this. Thanks for making this easy on me. I was actually going to humor you with a debate, but if you are actually saying that the responses to this on Giantbomb actually mean something... LAUGH OUT LOUD! Sure, there might be some people here that like this, but the majority of people on Giantbomb are core gamers that only really care about the next God of War, Gears of War, Uncharted, etc. Most people here don't really care about the Wii, or Wii like games.

I mean honestly dude. Get real. Now you are just being silly, and desperate... And making me chuckle. 100 bucks that the Giantbomb guys even say almost exactly what I said on a podcast in the near future. That Giantbomb-type people won't really care too much about this, but that there is still a market to be found. I could easily see that happen.

Looks kind of cool to me.
HD Games + Wii Style Games + Blue Ray = PS3, if it is marketed correctly and gets some solid releases can't see how this is a bad thing.

A lot of people are talking here as if everyone who ever wanted a Wii has already bought one, though I think the Wii is still the best selling console so Playstation wanting in on that action makes sense.

Time will tell I guess.

" You know what's REALLY awesome? How some of those incredibly derivative games they demoed required two motion controllers!  So you'll need to buy a starter pack AND an additional controller just to play those games!  Truly, this is the best possible way to get your game out there - require TWO controllers. "

Honestly, all you haters sound more pathetic and desperate then the people that are defending Move. Just FYI... "
I don't even own a 360. I own a PS3 and a Wii.

And my Wii is in my closet collecting dust while my PS3 hums quietly in my entertainment center.

The reason I'm upset is that I literally cannot understand how any of this is a good idea, how utterly shameless of a copy that it is, and how Sony does not seem to understand that it is not just the motion controls that help Nintendo sit at the top of the hardware sales charts month after month and rake in millions in profits every year.

Microsoft had the same idea with Natal, that being that clearly motion controls are why the Wii is selling so well. At least they had the good sense to also realize that marketing and image are also a factor, and released that new Xbox Experience or whatever that essentially gave the 360 Miis and a sleeker, more Wii-esque look for it's menus. The problem is that Natal is untested technology and Peter Molyneux is one of it's biggest supporters which makes me instantly skeptical of any claims that they make with regards to accuracy or control issues.

Meanwhile Sony is off literally remaking the Wiimote for the PS3, a system not originally designed for that motion control, and boasting about better accuracy to motions while spinning around in a circle and having the game fail to do what they want it to. Announcing nunchucks for the controller so you can play shooters like SOCOM 4, because we all know how well the Conduit did it for the Wii. And then going ahead and saying that the starter pack with the Playstation Eye, which is required for motion controls and which almost no one has because what games even use that thing anymore, will cost less than one hundred dollars, which is marketing speak for $99.95. Now, if that comes with a game, and if that bundle is included in a PS3 SKU (which is not standard issue by the way, oh no, you still have the option of buying the cheaper, non-motion controller bundle, which tells me they themselves are unconvinced about their own product), then the Wii will still be two hundred dollars cheaper. Personally, I think that this is going to go the way of the Sixaxis, and in a year or two no developer will even bother with it to any significant degree.

Of course I realize that Sony wants some of that delicious casual gamer money that Nintendo is making hand over fist every month, but this is not the way to do it. Not in any way.
