Sony GDC: More on Move

The PlayStation Move will be out later this year and will sell for under 100 bucks. Also, Sony's answer to Wii Sports revealed!

Peter Dille
Peter Dille
Here's more from Sony's GDC press conference.

Peter Dille, Sony's senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation Network, took to the stage second at the company's GDC press conference to cover some details on Sony's upcoming motion controller, PlayStation Move.

The Move will be released in multiple configurations.

  • Controller-only for users that already own a PlayStation Eye
  • PlayStation Move Starter Kit: A PS Eye, a controller, and a game.
  • PlayStation 3 Bundle: All of above, plus a PS3.

The starter kit is going to sell for under $100. A "PlayStation Move Sub-Controller" will also be available. SOCOM 4 will work with this add-on controller. It's... you know... a Nunchuk.

Dille then introduced Scott Rodhe, VP of product development at Sony's Worldwide Studios to discuss specifics. They first showed a game called Sports Champions, which sounds like a minigame compiliation, as they went on to show a sub-mode called Gladiator Duel. This showed a sword-and-shield gladiator battle that takes place from a behind-the-back perspective. This uses two motion controllers at the same time.

Sports Champions, which is looking more and more like Sony's answer to Wii Sports, also has a table tennis game. It's hard to get a good feel for it from the video feed, but it appears to be pretty natural.

Move Party is another minigame collection, but it looks a lot more like the EyeToy games of old by showing a video feed of the player on-screen. But instead of just flipping out with your body to play the games, it'll track the Move controller for painting, fly-swatting, haircutting, and the like.

LittleBigPlanet will receive an update that adds Move controller support to the game. The demo shown is a two-player mode, but instead of two sack people, one player uses the Motion controller to grab and manipulate specific materials to create bridges and solve puzzles. EyePet will also be available in some form of Move-enabled state this holiday season.

Motion Fighters is a bare-knuckle, one-on-one fighting game that reads two Move controllers as you beat the crap out of another guy from a behind-the-back perspective. Spinning backfists, uppercuts, headlocks, and other moves are all possible. Looks like a workout.

@MAST:  I'm sorry. Are you a child? Do you honestly need the opinion of four guys you don't know to validate your own? That's pathetic.

Again, the valid opinion that has been offered is that it doesn't matter how accurate Move is. Hardcore gamers don't want it, and causal gamers have the Wii and that's all they want. Those aren't contestable points.

I don't care what four guys I don't know think. I know what I think. Maybe you should try coming up with opinions of your own Mast. You might find that it makes you seem less like a pathetic fanboy waste.

Lawl. I was right. I said that "I bet the Giantbomb guys say basically what I've been saying in the next podcast" and what happens? Boom, in the Day 1 GDC podcast they basically say that they think all the derision and hate for Move is a shame. That all the comparisons to the Wii like it's a bad thing is a shame. That this has a ton of potential, and is WAAAAY better then the Wii. Jeff even finishes the podcast by saying that his favorite thing from Day 1 was the Playstation Move.

All of that is basically what I've been saying to you haters. That Move will do just fine, that it has tons of potential, and that it's way better then the Wii. Giantbomb guys agree with me, and basically said "shame on you" to all you naysayers. Honestly, why can't you all just sit back and say that it has potential, and wait for the outcome? That's all there is to do at this point. You people that are hating on it, and immediately saying that it's going to fail... That's nonsense. You don't know. There is no way that you can know. It's just a waiting game now. You're just wasting your breath with all your sensationalistic naysaying.

It's a cycle:
- Nintendo puts Analog in its n64 Controller, Sony followed a short while after with 2 Analogs in its PS Controller, Dual Analog
- NIntendo adds Rumble to its Controller with the Rumble Pack, Sony added 2 rumbles in its controller and called it the Dual Shock
- Nintendo puts Mii in the Wii, Sony came up with Home after
- Nintendo bring the Motion Controller, Sony came up with the same stuff 3-4 years after (at least Microsoft does something a little bit different with Natal)
It will be similar to the Wii, with better graphics and optional.

Wow these comments make me consider to stop reading the forums. This site sadly seems to be turning into site full of fanboys screaming at each other, just like gamefaqs. But that is the case for almost all video game communities. If you guys want people to take video games seriously, you have to stop being the sheep you are and grow up. Because of all the sites I read video game sites are always the worst.

I'm glad they added a nunchuck, I thought they'd force you to hold a sixaxis controller in your other hand, def gonna get this, the games mentioned here may be pretty generic but I'm sure there'll be some awesome games using this controller

Great, let's use the same example from 2008 and consider it relevant in 2010. Awesome. Uncharted 2, Ratchet, Killzone 2, inFamous and LittleBigPlanet are a real fuckfest of cutscenes, seriously.

Lot of heated debate going on here... I'm just gonna wade into the middle... there we go

 Sony is ape-ing the Wii.
If this stuff was original then it would be great. But instead all we are getting is a HD Wii.
And if the price is as estimated the full pack will retail for £350.
Is a casual gamer really gonna put down an addtional £350 after already buying a Wii and four controllers, god knows how many sports packs etc.
The only way this thing will actually sell is if it is substantially better than the Wii. Not just a little. Not just HD.
And 1:1 control? Dont make me laugh. No game can ever support 1:1 control.
Just look at the Wii Motion-Plus. It isnt quite 1:1 and yet people complained it made golf too accurate. How would 1:1 control help this? If I wanted to suck at golf I'd go to the driving range!

So I'm sorry Sony but unless you pull some really interesting software out of your bag this thing aint gonna fly

I don't think this or Natal will change anything. Both being add ons with (initially at least) very limited game support, I just don't see them catching on especially this late in the cycle.

@anamanaman: The problem is that this controller will run into the very same issues as the Wii when it comes to FPS controls. Not having a second analogstick means that rotation will be controlled by some awkward aim-far-to-left/right motion instead of the second analog stick. I would have prefered if they would have given the thing a second analog stick so that movement happens with the sticks, while aiming happens via motion detection. And the additional precision of Move won't really help here much either, as the Wiimotes pointing was already pretty good (even so only relative motion was possible, not absolute aiming like with a lightgun).

Heavy Rain with this, well sure, there might be potential in the adventure genre for a controller like this, quite a lot actually. But I wouldn't hold my breath. Current games take years to develop, even more so when they try to explore new genres and gameplay instead of building upon existing properties. So this console generation might easily be over before any good core games come out. And thats assuming that the device is actually usable and doesn't run into show-stopper issues like the Wiimote.

Yeah, I dont get the hate for this thing. It looks like simply a more modern implementation of the wii remote, with some cool additions (like camera). I'd love to try playing a real current gen FPS with motion controls. There's just too much holding the Wii back for it to be a compelling alternative for Motion control fans at this point in the technology cycle.

Come on, imagine how much more awesome heavy rain could have been with this thing.

Its a shame you all think this is stupid. It looks better than Natal because you actually have something in your hand with buttons on it. Waving your hands about in front of the TV is not a user friendly input method. Even though it is effectively just a Wii remote it does have the advantage of the camera, and being on an HD system. I don't see it as being a massive success but I think it has a little more going for it than Natal. Natal is cool technology but is it really better than holding a controller?

Sonys Move lacks a second analogstick, so welcome another few years of shitty camera controls. I would have thought they had learned that lesson by now from the failures of the PSP and Wii.

I'l hand them the fact that it looked way more accurate and fluid than i would have thought before the show but they should never have it compete directly versus a regular controller thats just asking for trouble.  How much is natal's input lag at atm ?

Ripping off the Wii so blatently just doesn't make any sense, surely Sony doesn't think that they'll be able to cut into Nintendo's market, do they? Microsoft tried to cut into Apple's iPod market with the Zune and we see how that turned out. The Wii doesn't continue to sell like it does because of the controls, I mean sure, that's what got it going, but now it's the Nintendo Wii name that keeps the sales figures up. If anyone thinks that all the casual gamers that bought Wii's are gonna turn around and drop $3-400 on a PS3 for motion controls then they are crazy.

These comments are starting to remind me of when Microsoft announced the Avatar support in their New Xbox Experience; "A gaming company is taking a successful idea and creating their own adaption of it? OH MY GOD WHAT A GIANT RIPOFF THEY HAVE NO SHAME". Hahahaha...guess what happened when MS did that, guys? They completely and seamlessly integrated the Avatar system into their IP, which has been a huge success and, like everyone is saying, is still completely optional

I've always found that the base concept of the Wii has been a great one, but too much focus was taken away from the strength of the hardware to realize it, and it always felt like I was playing last-gen games, but with a new control system. I believe that this will finally bring both elements together as they always should have been. Like another commenter said, provide a great middle-ground between markets to appeal to everybody, casual and dedicated markets included. Now for god's sakes, stop whining about this; you can completely ignore it and play your own games while some of us actually enjoy this new control system.

As much is I know this is supposed to cater to the Wii crowd, i don´t really think they´re in the same market, yeah the ps3 may be more of a complete package but the fact that the Wii is considerable cheaper really separates the different tastes.

Perosnally, I dont think ill be buying this because its $100 for the starter kit which doesn´t include the sub controller, besides I really couldn´t care less for motion controllers.

There's nothing here that really sells the peripheral to me.  Yeah, the technology is neat, but a lineup of mini-games and half-baked ideas for tacked-on motion control feel far too much like Sony trying to play catch-up without enough gaming innovation.  The games are what's going to sell this sucker, and they're just not bringing a whole lot to the table that hasn't been done before.

looks like they showed off a bunch of proof-of-concept stuff turned shovel-ware. its the kind of stuff you show at a GDC, its not E3 folks. Thats the problem with this internet age, everyone is always glued into everything that they lose site of what is actually going on here, This is a Game Developers Conference, its for GAME DEVELOPERS! clearly nothing they showed is anywhere near ready to be sold. Clearly the only game, besides the easy to make arrow game and ping pong and also the eye pet, that look legit is the only one made by a serious dev- LittleBigPlanet- they've clearly implemented it very well with good gameplay design in mind and they showed how perfectly accurate it was and i can already see that thing is going to be like a gift from the gods for the hardcore LBP level designers.

I think this stuff looks neat.  People need to stop complaining about motion controllers, because, well, we only have had one console have a motion controller so far.  We will see what happens, but why not let the other give it a shot with better technology.  For all we know, it could be awesome!

That is the most positive thing I have said about Sony in years.

I gotta be honest....The reason I don't use my Wii as much as the other systems has nothing to do with its diminutive technical specs. It's because it's just not as fun to come home after a long day, kick my feet up and then wave my arms around for two hours just to play a game. Holding a controller is comfortable, I can sit back, have a drink, smoke - whatever ...

This is more of the same. It's no better because it's a better looking system, even if I use it more. I'll stick to my conventional controllers for awhile

I don't even like playing my PS3 after work let alone motion controls, the vast majority of people on this board aren't the targeted demographic.

The only thing that I am looking forward to with motion controls on PS3 , is the possibility of a M rated next gen HD motion game. I hate motion controls as much as anyone but if they can do this for me it may change my mind, I doubt it though. I just hope they do something besides some lame ass wii game imitations. .
