Sony Makes PSOne Classics Available for Vita In Most Ludicrous Way Possible

If you live in America, you get nine officially supported games. If you live in Europe, you get over a hundred. What?

If you work at it, Cho Aniki is unofficially downloadable for North American Vita owners. You're going to want to work at it. HARD.
If you work at it, Cho Aniki is unofficially downloadable for North American Vita owners. You're going to want to work at it. HARD.

Good news, everyone who has been itching to download classic PlayStation games to their Vita! Now you can! Unless, of course, you live in North America, in which case... Bad news, everyone!

So, here's how this currently shakes out. Sony has announced nine supported PSOne games for North American Vita users...and 129 for European players. Why the absurd dissonance between regions? No idea. Sony hasn't said, and it doesn't sound like they will be explaining it any time soon.

However, here's where things get weird. Reddit users, as they are often wont to do, have compiled a list of games that can be played via a workaround, despite not being officially supported for North American users. Basically, you'll need to have a PS3 to download the games, and then do some transferring from there. You can read about the whole process here.

Undoubtedly, North American players will eventually be able to access all of these games in an official capacity, but until then you may have to do a little working around. Below this paragraph you'll find the full list of officially available games. Bolded and underlined games are officially available in North America, while the rest will be available in Europe once the Vita 1.8 update is downloaded. Reddit's list of unofficially downloadable games can be found here.

Since some people in the comments are confused, let me be super clear. The below list is ONLY officially released games for EU and NA. You'll have to go to the above Reddit link to see stuff that is unofficially downloadable.

That's gotta be a record for the most product links in a single news story, right?

I was under the impression this device had the power between a PS2 and a PS3, so why not just turn this thing into a portable PS2.

Emulating a PS2 takes a lot more power than an actual PS2 had, for a while it was thought you needed more than even the PS3 had. Whether the Vita can pull it off remains to be seen, and even then it would probably be a limited selection like there is now on PS3.

Some european users with a sense of humour you mean. This is a little taste of what it feels like to be in the EU market a lot of the time. Take it with good grace, you still get a much better deal over all.

No, I'm pretty sure I meant what I said. Like I said, I don't really have a stake in Sony's incompetence to serve both markets as I bought those games a long time ago. Some of those comments may be written as jokes (and if so whatever), but a lot of them come off as angry. It doesn't make sense to have a go at US consumers, who have no power over the situation, instead of Sony and the publishers.

But the PSP emulated the PS1 games greatly, FFVII was a joy to play on it for decreased load times in battles, you would think Sony would of built the Vita with this in mind if it uses PS2 tech in it, but I don't know and just remember when they showed this thats what the Sony guys were saying that it was between a PS2 and PS3. They will probably just put out collections like the Team ICO and God of War collections on the PS3, do this with GTA, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear francises on the Vita, just put some effort in getting people to buy these things.

In the past they have blamed copyright issues for delays in getting games out. I'm going to patiently wait and see if things clear up before I go ballistic over nothing.

Europe doesn't get shafted for once, and of course the overentitled US playerbase complains, NOW YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS

You get a full-featured Netflix, hell, most sites offer everything for the US and nothing for us UK and EU folk, Hulu, South Park Studios, the list goes on, you can play MMOs without ridiculous cultural and language barriers that the European playerbase has to put up with, you get cheaper games and more services with the things you buy, such as ESPN with Xbox live, Atlus games released on time as opposed to a year after they were relevant, your previous generation games run at their full framerate unlike their EU counterparts (Yes, that is a thing, look it up)

We get some extra PS1 games to play on the Vita, and you suddenly call it injustice, it's very irritating

@Hawker: Except, there are reason like licensing for most of those things, shitty as they may be. But there doesn't seem to be much reason for this at all, especially since you can just transfer it through the PS3.

@yoshimitz707: I agree, there probably was no reason for this, but there are no reasons why stuff like that happens here either, we have to suffer because Atlus are too stupid and lazy to begin publishing their translated games in Europe as opposed to wait for it to get outsourced by someone who can bother, for example. I haven't even named half of the injustices we in Europe face constantly in the gaming and general media front, yet we never complain when they happen, because the sad fact of the matter is we're just used to it now.

This is pretty bad. The Vita's already in the shitter, they certainly don't need to be giving the finger to a whole continent of consumers without explaining why.

Maybe they figure since no one's buying the Vita, it won't offend anybody?

Real dumb stuff.

@Hawker: Is there something that makes both of those situations mutually exclusive? Why can't both be injustices to both consumer bases? You act like someone telling somebody that they have no right to complain about their toe being ripped off because you had your foot ripped off, while neither of those things are connected. Like at all. Both parties are aloud to complain about companies not performing correctly.

This thread shows how little people actually knows about Sony Entertainment, since it launch the European PS store have had more games, more dlcs and more of them free, more demos, more dynamic themes and more free ones, and so on. The same is true of the Japanese market. Sony always had a better support and "respect" of European customers and more community events like the Gran Turismo GT Academy. SCEA is an American subsidiary, we may have slightly cheaper prices, but on customer relations we ain't got shit.

@legendlexicon: Because it's always treated as a far bigger deal when it's America getting shafted for once, it's like me going through a field and getting my foot, my other leg, my hand and half my head blown off and just having to accept it while some other guy manages to lose his toe and suddenly it's a huge issue. They're not mutually exclusive, both cases are bad, I just hate how when Americans get the short end of the stick once in a blue moon it becomes a huge issue while Europeans are still getting treated as second-rate citizens on a daily basis

Sony are doing a piss poor job at showing gamers why upgrading from a PSP to Vita is necessary. Not only does the PSP support all the PSone games on PSN, you can also pick up the PSP at a much cheaper price and the memory sticks aren't nearly as expensive as the Vita's. I'm happy to keep my money in my pocket right now.

Pretty much what the others said, it's nice to see the other regions getting a better deal for once... Rare as it is...

What's more funny is the fact that this is "Ludicrous" while if you live in a PAL region this is pretty much standard fare. This is why people from over here are having a laugh over how "upsetting" this is.

Wow, aren't we just letting out how we really feel today! I'm an American, and thus I feel slightly disappointed about the whole spiel, but I can shrug it off because a) I don't own a Vita, and won't anytime soon and b) a lot of the best PSone games that are available I already own because I bought them when they came out years ago. In the end, I think that North American consumers should just grin and bear it- a little patience goes a long way. Also, to the Europeans that are angry at the services their fellow gamers across the pond receive: it's not our fault that the big bad corporations like to constantly rain on your parade; please don't take the hate out on us. Sorry that you've been suffering- we can only wait to see what the future holds, right?

Right, because if we just "grin and bear it", corporations will just naturally understand how we feel and change their ways. Your approach is why things have gotten as messed up as they currently are. Also, since you have no intention of owning a Vita, your opinion is pretty worthless.

YO Alex,

what does this sentence you wrote mean,

"Reddit users, as they are often wont to do, have compiled a list of games that can be played via a workaround, despite not being officially supported for North American users."

what does "as they are often wont to do" mean.......I simply do not understand the grammar of this
