Sony Online Lays Off More Than 200, Cancels The Agency

Three Sony Online studios are shuttered in the wake of major cuts at the publisher.

News began bubbling yesterday via the Twitter feed of well-informed game developer/frequent employment death knell-sounder George Broussard that publisher Sony Online was cutting a significant chunk of its development staff. That news was sadly confirmed today with SOE's announcement that 205 positions would be terminated across three studios in Seattle, Denver and Tucson. All of those studios are now shuttered, as a result.

Of the projects formerly being worked on by these teams, the frequently delayed MMO spy thriller The Agency proved to be the biggest casualty. Initially announced back in 2007, The Agency made repeated smoke signals regarding continued existence via screenshots and occasional previews, but the game never seemed to get a firm grip on anything resembling a release date. Its cancellation certainly comes as little shock, though is no less tragic, given the hefty number of people now out of work.

No Caption Provided

In the official statement, as it originally appeared on Game Informer (and appears in its entirety below), Sony cites the need to focus on key upcoming titles in established franchises such as EverQuest and PlanetSide. SOE also states that current MMO projects, such as EverQuest II and DC Universe Online are unaffected by these cuts.

As part of a strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce, SOE announced today that it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios.  As part of this restructuring, SOE is discontinuing production of The Agency so it can focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties, while also maintaining its current portfolio of online games.  All possible steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern.

This strategic decision will have no impact on SOE’s current portfolio of live games; additionally SOE will transition development efforts for the Denver and Tucson studios’ suite of products to its San Diego headquarters.  This strategic alignment of development resources better positions SOE to remain a global leader in online gaming and deliver on its promise of creating entertaining games for players of all ages, and servicing the 20 million players that visited SOE servers in just the past year.

Wow, how many more studios will succumb to the overambitious claws of MMO's? I wonder why it took so long for SOE to decide this game was a no go. Worst of all, how many more closed studios until publishers realize MMO's are huge ventures nowadays. Smaller is the way to go, not bigger.

I feel terribly for all the people who lost their jobs, may you find a new path soon.

Jesus christ, that's a TON of people. The jedis are going to feel this one.

Really sad, SOE is a promising studio. They were really making moves to develop MMOs that weren't just Warcraft-clones. Free Realms and DC Universe Online are proof of that. I don't know what some of these studios were working on, but it's sad nonetheless. Hope these guys find some new jobs soon, or start up new studios.

That sucks for the employees, but SoE has been due for a shake-up for a while.  It seems like they have been coasting for the last decade.

They're talking to the shareholders ultimately, and you have to be stoked about every decision you make when you're doing that. Even when you're ruining people's lives. Boo.

If anything SOE probably saved a bunch of resources (and jobs) by cutting the agency before it could flop just like crimecraft and APB. Uniting both studios that work with trading card games will probably benefit those products too.

First, as I said in the thread on this yesterday, it's disappointing to see people in my region joining the ranks of the unemployed.  However, at the same time, SOE has enough MMOs already on the market and in the works.

Also, there are a couple things I don't understand.

First, this garbage about SOE wanting to focus on more space/fantasy MMOs, or as someone else put it "That thing is successful, let's make one of those!"  Do people not realize that if it weren't for SOE and the original EQ, WoW wouldn't even be on the market right now?  SOE still has a loyal following even in the original EQ.  From a business standpoint, why wouldn't they continue their popular legacies?

I know, don't you wonder what the status of that game was? I'm always curious when this sort of thing happens. These people have had to had some idea for some time now that this game was never going to happen. I wonder how that affected the work being done. I mean 4 years worth of work, who's fault is that. Even if they could release something it would be better than nothing I would imagine. How is there nothing even remotely ready for release in all that time.

We all knew The Agency was never coming out.

This game was announced in fucking 2007, and we rarely heard anything else about it up until now -- 4 years later. It was just one one of those games where you just knew it'd never see the light of day. I'm super-curious about how much of the game was done though, in this 4 years. That's a long time man.

Oh damn, I was totally trying to think of the name of this game not even three days ago. It sucks it got canned, as I was curious what was going on with it. It's never good when so many positions are lost, and I was really interested in seeing how The Agency was going to turn out.

I hope maybe, just maybe they're putting things on the backburner until they can resume development with a new team, or something. I really want to see this project see the light of day.

I wonder if this could have something to do with DCUO's weak reception.   The Agency seems like it would have been cool though.

I bet these folks could hash out an intriguing TF2 mod. I'd buy it.
With the field cleared, does this mean the fabled Alpha Protocol MMO stands to see the light of day?

Yes, they stopped working on their APB/Crimecraft style MMO for some reason. "
APB and Crimecraft were just crap, if you actually manage to make a decent game in that style you'd have a decent shot.
Making a decent fantasy/space mmo isn't gonna cut it, it has to be great and even then they need a metric shit ton of luck.

I'm not saying I don't get why they're doing it though it's that good ol'   "that thing is successful so let's make one of those!" mentality.

Oh good, I had The Agency confused with Agent, the open-world spy thing Rockstar's working on. Don't get me wrong, it really, really sucks that two hundred people lost their jobs, but a part of me is focused on the fact that at least the game that got cancelled wasn't one that would have done any good anyway.
