Sony Reveals PlayStation 4 Pricing, Design

i'm all for kinda hating MS after their greed and lack of tact but the "this console = new video card" argument could just as easily apply to the PS4.

maybe not as NICE of a video card but still...

the fact that Sony seems to actually respect gamers and give them value for their money does give them a ton of brownie points. and they'll probably have some damn fine 1st party exclusives. almost enough to make me want one day 1, but we'll see how it goes.

So when publishers on the PS4 come back with online codes, or hell, even single player codes, what are you going to do then? I wouldn't assume that PS4 will be safe from DRM. Does everyone forget its up to the publisher?

Glad I switched from Microsoft to Sony during this generation, looks like we'll have a new (or rather, old) king.

After the last half hour of that press conference in which Sony laid out the fact that they are siding with gamers and consumers above anything else and then followed through with their actual policies, I had to pre-order. I was already 90% not going to get an Xbox One due to its seemingly anti-consumer policies and some of the recent ties Microsoft had to the NSA programs like PRISM. Sony doing what everyone expected they would never do though, sealed the deal. That and their exclusives are more in my wheelhouse.

I couldnt even comprehend the levels of smackdown that happened here. It was a one-two punch. Epic E3 megaton. I thought those were over. And hell, we got FF 15 and KH 3 announcements out of it.

You put on a good games show MS, but thats just smoke and mirrors trying to hide your anti-consumer BS. 3 minutes after it went live i preordered a PS4 on amazon. Never did that before.

Wow. That. Was. Insane.

The Sony senior management team and PR machine deserves massive credit for such a masterful victory in messaging. Looking back at everything it's amazing how much stumbling and beating the Microsoft message took to get to today only to be obliterated by a calm, collected, and reserved Sony message that has been essentially silent for the past 4 months. It doesn't take much for a meltdown, talk about controlling the message and taking advantage of your opponent's weakness. Tretton has some serious balls.

Sony has to be taking a huge loss on each console to get to that pricepoint (which was clearly decided right after the MS announce - did you notice how simple and rushed that slide looked compared to everything else with it's black Arial font text against white with a quick pasted graphic). In any case it just may prove to be the smartest decision they could have ever made as price speaks the loudest to the largest audience, especially given the simultaneous launch window.

I'm still in shock. Looks like the ball is back in Microsoft's court now to respond with price drop and drm drop, I don't see how they could launch now without doing that. Either way, the gamers win.

Having said all that, I don't understand the whole "death to microsoft" mentality, it's the whole competition with Microsoft that lead to this great news from Sony for consumers in the first place. Without the Xbox One in the mix there's no way Sony would release the PS4 at that amazing price point for example. Having just one at the top is not a good thing, they need the give and take of competition to keep everything in check. For the sake of that market competition I hope Microsoft makes some serious concessions to get back in this game.

@flacracker: correct, euro prices include 20% VAT (therefore I took it out), but US prices are without VAT

but you are right, the difference is $40 ($399 vs. $439)

and wrong, your difference of $103 is way off

THe conversion disparity might not seem as bad, but Microsoft is screwing us in the UK to the tune of one hundred and fifty two dollar difference. The slight price adjustment Sony gave us is far more generous.

Hell yes! Someone still wants to make a console I want to buy! I was very worried going into today that I would be leaving console gaming behind.

Sony walked into that room both guns blazing. They came ready to fight this year.

Oh man I forgot what console war comments were like. It's been a while! I will say the design of the PS4 looks very cool. It's my favorite next gen in terms of its design.

Haha, excellent. I am down with Sony again this generation. Sure, they did struggle a bit last gen and might again this gen as far as connectivity goes and being on the cutting edge of software stuff, but honestly, they seem way more consumer friendly and not charging for online seems like it is going to be the nail in the coffin. All they basically had to come out saying is "we are the opposite of Xbone" and they won. Still, I wonder what Nintendo has up their sleves?!

i still have no plans to get a new console this year but Sony DEFINITELY has my attention

Did anyone else feel the mad glee in Jack Tretton's voice as he skewered Microsoft's DRM stuff? Like I imagine he had a mental image of twisting a knife in Don Mattrick's gut the entire speech.

Just hope people realize that they did not confirm KH3 as an exclusive.
