Sony Reveals PlayStation 4 Pricing, Design

Want to pick up a PlayStation 4 this fall? You're gonna have to lay down some money to get one. But how much?

After today's relatively surprising reveal of the Xbox One's $499/€499 price point, the ball was in Sony's court to either match, exceed, or undercut Microsoft's pricing. The price of the PS4 was likely decided weeks ago, of course, but there was still plenty of anticipation before Sony's press conference as to precisely how much their new console would cost. Well, now we know: the Playstation 4 is going to run you $399/€399, or 349 pounds in the UK.

Maybe you didn't hear me: the PS4 is going to cost $399, a full $100 less than the Xbox One. And Sony's also promising to fully respect the rights of gamers to sell, trade, and lend games between themselves.

Alex will be back in a bit with a more thorough writeup of Sony's conference, but for right now, all we can say is that Sony has opened up on Microsoft with some serious firepower with their E3 showing. This is gonna be an interesting year!

But Sony still fucked up the Dollars to Euros and pounds conversion.

The only "bad" news was that you have to have PS+ to play online...but the PS+ service is so worth it, I'm totally fine with it.

And you'll get Drive Club for free at launch with PS+? Makes it pretty easy to swallow.

Thank you Sony for respecting my rights as a gamer, and that's why I'm buying a PS4 this holiday season. It also doesn't hurt that the price is better and I'm interested in a lot of the games I just watched.

Yeah, they just sold me on a PS4, and this is coming from a guy who has pretty much played nothing but 360 for the past few years. Time to get used to a DualShock again...

When the audience chants "Sony! Sony! Sony!" for keeping the status quo, and you're Microsoft, you might want to reconsider the sort of decisions you've been making.

Really pleased, I think all the anti-ms sentiment these last few days came from a legitimate concern our hobby was being strong armed away from us. Sony's made me feel nostalgic and excited for the future of console gaming, even if eventually the rose tint fades and we adjust back to how both of them are essential our dope peddlers, I enjoyed staying up to ride the sony wave. I also really want that poncho's game, looked great.

Euro/Pound conversion is screwed up because tax is already added. US price does not include tax

Im leaving 360, PS4 wins

The Kinect adds $100, did nobody seriously see $399 coming after Microsoft announced $499 WITH an included Kinect?

It was super obvious :/

Did not think this was going to happen. I may get a PS4 this holiday.

All of Microsoft's exclusives that I care about are also coming to PC...so the PS4 is making one HELLUVAN argument...

Unfortunate to hear that PS+ is needed for online play on PS4, even though its a service I already subscribe to. Otherwise an amazing press conference!

This is a fascinating turn. I felt it was pretty certain that Sony would want to do what Microsoft was doing, but interestingly I get the impression they never intended to go that far (oddly).

I mean I don't know that, but I have never heard them even mention it until now, so the fact that they dont have this implementable DRM is such great news even if not surprising. It's just good to hear them confirm it.

The sharing with friends simplicity (one step) video was a nice touch.

Sony just WENT FOR IT.

Sony obviously learned a hard lesson after how they handled the launch of the Playstation 3. Too bad Microsoft didn't pay attention. I am definitely switching to Sony.

Crazy. Absolutely crazy. I don't know how they can go that low if the hardware is supposedly so much beefier than the XBONE.

Edited by Woggerman1974

Sony PS4 + PS Plus = $460 for first year

Xbox One including 1 year of Gold = $500

$40 difference if you want to play multiplayer

Edited by DoublePlusRad

@flacracker: So did MS.. and Sony is still 100 Eur cheaper

Edited by drakesfortune

Wow...used games allowed...$399.99...probably slightly better hardware (ram at least). I think Sony just won next gen. I'm buying them both, but I will buy every multi platform game on PS4, because I am a game collector and I HATE the idea of not owning my games, or of losing them to time as consoles become obsolete. Thank you Sony for standing up for game collectors.
