Sony Reveals PlayStation 4 Pricing, Design

Want to pick up a PlayStation 4 this fall? You're gonna have to lay down some money to get one. But how much?

No Caption Provided

After today's relatively surprising reveal of the Xbox One's $499/€499 price point, the ball was in Sony's court to either match, exceed, or undercut Microsoft's pricing. The price of the PS4 was likely decided weeks ago, of course, but there was still plenty of anticipation before Sony's press conference as to precisely how much their new console would cost. Well, now we know: the Playstation 4 is going to run you $399/€399, or 349 pounds in the UK.

Maybe you didn't hear me: the PS4 is going to cost $399, a full $100 less than the Xbox One. And Sony's also promising to fully respect the rights of gamers to sell, trade, and lend games between themselves.

Alex will be back in a bit with a more thorough writeup of Sony's conference, but for right now, all we can say is that Sony has opened up on Microsoft with some serious firepower with their E3 showing. This is gonna be an interesting year!

I plan on getting a PS4 later in its life cycle, but for now it's a Xbox One for me. Sorry haters crazy as it seems I trust M$ more then Sony when it comes to their online infrastructure. Also, I liked their exclusives more. I need my Forza, Dead Rising and TItanfall. Hate away.

I plan on buying a PS4 but sometimes I think for $450 I could just finish pimping out my computer.

The amount of people that bought Sony's shit hook line and sinker tonight really amuses me. If you guys honestly believe that SONY doesn't have some sort of stupid nonsense to ruin all this positive buzz you guys are out of your fucking minds. I guess maybe I've been through this loop enough times to see it coming but something tells me by this fall a lot of people won't be so high on Microsoft or Sony once more info starts coming out.

Sony being the company that patented RFID based Blu Ray content locks, or did we just forget that was a thing that happened already?

Oh but it is ok right, because Sony told us they loved used games, so they couldn't possibly do anything bad!

I know right? I'm just surprised that there's actually anyone left on the planet who hasn't been in a "class" covered by a class-action suit against Sony. I've been in a couple myself. Ironically, I got some free CDs out of the rootkit fiasco, as if I would have taken them!

People buy into hype real easily.

I'm not surprised they are "allowing used games" because Sony doesn't give two shits about screwing over developers or publishers to try and make in-roads with "gamers" (rather, the pure consumer version who aren't industry-savvy). Developers lose a lot of money to the used game racket and now Sony, the higher-end spec-wise of the two next-gen consoles, expects developers (and publishers) to just deal with it? Seriously? I'm not agreeing with how Microsoft is handling it but just ignoring it isn't right either.

Say what you want about Microsoft and a lot of their details, but someone on the console side was going to have to fight Gamestop sooner or later.

And Sony saying $400 doesn't mean shit without a spec list for that sku. Besides, Microsoft still has plenty of time to announce a subsidy plan for ~$100 - 200 or partnerships with cable companies (here in the US at least) and get a nice jab in before the round starts.

Looks like that there are no SKUs, just you get the console. Only thing that sucks is having to pay to play online, though you do get a free game out of it. Used game policy just seems straight forward to me, and if MS just did the same thing, this conversation wouldn't even have happened we could all keep doing what we have been doing for decades. The only problem I have with it is developers don't get a cut of the used sales at all, but that is not really something you could change, and that will have to be cut into with releasing (good) DLC.

With the Xbox One we will be doing what we have been on PC for ages. PCs don't have used games, with Steam and before that, disc based game with a CD-key that checks with a server there is no lending to a friend. There is gifting on Steam, just like on X1. Renting on PC does exist though it's not used that much. A Xbox One disc is nothing more then a peace of plastic after you install the game to the console, just like PC games you buy on disc. It wouldn't surprise me if they just forgo the discs at some point and just sell codes in stores to keep the retailers happy and reduce production costs.

Having used steam for year I have absolutely no problems what so ever with the Xbox One. And here in Sweden, both consoles cost the same right now.

Jumping ship 0_o really? What does that mean exactly. Were you really on board to begin with? XBONE has some really nice incentives for buying the product. MS is pushing the edge of what gamers want in requiring the camera in the kinect. To which I hope changes gaming or adds features and value over time. Sony is playing it safe in having the vision as separate peripheral. In my opinion peripherals don't succeed and limit your install base.

To be fair, the biggest mistake Sony made then was their: 'We are Play-fucking-Station. If you have a game, you need to come to us, we're not going after it for you' mentality. At least early in the generation. New systems usually have dry spells just after launch, but with PS3 it was really nuts.

At least it seems Microsoft is going after games. We all agree that Sony is doing much better in gamers' view right now, but Microsoft did show more exclusive games at E3.

I almost pre-ordered the $299 PS3 bundle that came with GTA:V and the headset, thinking it was a PS4. You can't begin to understand how disappointed I was when I found out it was a PS3 bundle. Ow, my heart.

History is repeating itself. Back when the PS3 was next gen, the PS2 outdid the Xbox in so many ways that Sony got stupid and made all the PS3 mistakes. Now that the 360 did better than the PS3 this time, MS is making some stupid moves now.

SONY executed perfectly. They were very smart about their products (not only the PS4), they LISTENED to the fans, and they were always one step (at least) ahead of Microsoft. It's even a little hard to understand (at least for me) what THE FUCK Microsoft was thinking... but I really think they deserve it, for giving a fuck about their fans (or the so called hardcore gamers)... Maybe Microsoft was a little too cocky. Maybe they thought "We're Microsoft, what could go wrong? People buy our shit anyways"....WRONG!!! ... I applaud Sony for TEACHING Microsoft a LESSON, maybe the one they'll never recover from... PS4 winner by knockout!

The playstation 4 UK price in dollars $544.27 ($111 UK premium)

The Xbox One price in dollars $669.11 ($127 UK premium)

applying the san francisco sales tax of 8.75% to the PS4 the price of an playstation on launch will be $433 while the xbox will be $542.

Thank you Sony for respecting my rights as a gamer, and that's why I'm buys a PS4 this holiday season. It also doesn't hurt that the price is better and I'm interested in a lot of the games I just watched.

Rights as a gamer? What rights? You're buying proprietary software that runs on a closed system. The EULA can contain whatever restrictions they want it to. Yes it's nice that Sony is allowing the system to play used games. But you have no intrinsic right to that ability, legal or otherwise.

Now we just need to, you know, see how games play on each console. I kind of feel like that's an important next step before deciding which console is superior.

There's no doubt that Sony trounced Microsoft yesterday but since when has logic decided the sales made by average Joe public (as in not you or I)? What with CoD, the legacy of the 360 and Sony's leaked info gaff last year I predict the One will outsell the PS4 simply because a lot of people are not like us folk. Sales of the console at launch with CoD (please shout at me if I'm wrong about the release date!) will enable a swift reduction of the cost, undercutting Sony quickly and then the "I want to watch TV and monitor my heart-rate" crowd will snap up more when they finally need a Wii replacement. Microsoft (or Sony even) might even change their DRM policies once things get going; it's really early days.

Don't get me wrong, as it stands right now the PS4 is a far better choice. My point is that this often means little. The PS3 was better when you crunched the numbers (nerds calculating things logicaly) and yet time after time the 360 outperformed it. And that's just one example.

We'll have to wait and see, only time will tell. It's going to be very interesting.

Such a sexy looking console, looks like a updated PS2 which I like.

Sony absolutely killed it today, it says something when the head of Sony America says their console won't be using no online DRM and can play used games, which leads to the biggest applause I have heard in E3 in years. $100 cheaper than the XBONE with none of this bullshit motion controls built in. Have loved this generation with my 360 but how can any console gamer say no to what they said today, they are a console ass console and that is always what I want for my games.

there's something called import taxes in many countries. germany would have to pay 19% + 7% on the dollar price. so 378€ including all the taxes. cheeper, true, but it's not worth it for 20 euros, especially when something happens to the console. wink 360 red ring wink.

Sony did all the right things.

I am conflicted, personally. I am a huge 360/Xbox gamer but... AAAAGH they did a damned good job.

Doesn't really change that the One has the games I'm more excited about, though.
