Sony's E3 2013 Press Briefing: A Stone Cold Stunner

If there was a thing you wanted Sony to do at today's press event, they probably did it.

That was a hell of a thing to watch.

We've seen the box, seen more games, and gotten the price. Hard to argue with any of what we saw, really.
We've seen the box, seen more games, and gotten the price. Hard to argue with any of what we saw, really.

After a day of mostly expected, occasionally exciting, as often disappointing announcements from Microsoft and various third-party publishers, I was all settled in, expecting Sony to maybe have a few fun new things to show. I didn't expect anything too garish. I didn't expect to be bowled over. I didn't expect much surprise. I sure as hell didn't expect what I got.

Instead of just another half-enthusiastic press event, Sony came to E3 looking for a fight. Early on the tone was set for something pretty great, but by the time we hit the halfway point, it almost looked like Sony was actively mocking Microsoft's tepid announcements and various system-related controversies. And that was before Sony actually started mocking Microsoft quite directly for all those things and then some.

Sony showed confidence at tonight's press event. It showed swagger, awareness of its own audience, and, most importantly, games. Man, did it ever show a whole bunch of games. Even if you didn't love every single one of them, I'd be amazed if you couldn't find at least one or two in there to get a little bit excited about.

Sure, things started out a bit slow. Jack Tretton was quick to promote the Vita and and the PS3, showing off a couple of new things (Walking Dead on Vita), as well as some games we already knew about, like Tearaway for the Vita, and The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls for PS3. That last one was a particularly odd demo, showing the lead character played by Ellen Page in some heavy CIA training that looked more evocative of something like Zero Dark Thirty. Presumably, that game is still about ghosts and stuff.

Transistor was one of several noteworthy indie games to come out heavily in favor of the PlayStation platform.
Transistor was one of several noteworthy indie games to come out heavily in favor of the PlayStation platform.

But once the PS4 stuff kicked in, it didn't let up. After a bit of brief house-cleaning regarding video apps (you may be shocked to learn that there will be video apps), the games just started flowing. Solid trailers for known quantities like inFamous: Second Son, DriveClub, and Killzone: Shadow Fall, were joined by Ready at Dawn's steampunky looking shooter The Order: 1886, a new game that unfortunately only had a CG trailer (albeit kind of a cool looking one). Third-party games like Destiny, Watch_Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Elder Scrolls Online got lengthy, mostly impressive demos (unfortunately, the AC IV build crapped out part of the way through), while Square Enix managed to bowl over the entire audience with trailers for Final Fantasy XV (formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII) and, believe it or not, Kingdom Hearts III. Hell, we even found out WBIE and Avalanche Studios are making a goddamn Mad Max game. Who saw that one coming?

There was an incredibly strong indie presence as well, kicked off by Supergiant Games coming out to introduce Transistor, which will debut on the PS4, as well as PC. Other indie titles now exclusively headed to Sony platforms (on consoles, anyway) include Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Don't Starve, Outlast, and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee New N' Tasty. These announcements were made in tandem with Sony unveiling its indie self-publishing initiative, which will allow indie studios to bring their games to the PlayStation Store free of any publisher deal nonsense.

That announcement joined several others that gave the impression Sony had been listening to criticism directed toward the Xbox One. People were already high on all the game demos when Tretton returned to confirm that the PS4 would feature none of the restrictive DRM features Microsoft planned to employ with its new console. Online checks would not be required to play single-player games offline, nor would there be any restrictions on used, disc-based games. All this culminated in the price announcement: $399.99 in North America, $100 less than Microsoft's $499 Xbox One price point. Sony's only negative news--the revelation that multiplayer gaming would be folded into the PlayStation Plus subscription service--was mostly offset by the volume of additional game content coming to Plus subscribers, as well as the news that other net-based media services wouldn't be locked behind the paywall.

I didn't care an iota about Destiny prior to today's conference, but the demo shown during the event finally got me on board.
I didn't care an iota about Destiny prior to today's conference, but the demo shown during the event finally got me on board.

Given all of this, it's hard to look at Sony's press conference as anything other than an exceptionally brutal blow to any momentum Microsoft had at this point. Where Microsoft appeared monolithic and generally unconcerned with currying any additional favor with consumers or developers, Sony looked fluid, adaptable, and self-aware. It showed a variety of games that spanned genres, tones, and scopes, offering a little something for everyone.

By all means, the PlayStation 4 could still find ways to disappoint consumers--not all of those games are going to turn out to be great, obviously. But in terms of what you would want from a console maker's E3 press presentation, Sony absolutely knocked it out of the park, and it did so by simply demonstrating a strong understanding of what its consumers would conceivably want, rather than just assuming that consumers will take whatever it feels like giving them.

It's about what I expected. I didn't think the EA/Activision/Ubisoft cartel theory to control the consoles made much sense. So if those types of games come to Xbone first so what? They'll come to the PS 4 or PC eventually, well some of them will. I don't play much multiplayer so I probably won't subscribe if I go the PS 4 route. I'm interested to see if they will make concessions on the Xbone, back-peddling all of the anti-consumerism. Since yesterday they showed a new 360 Console and new 360 games on the way, that may explain why backwards compatibility is not yet considered. However, they might introduce backwards compatibility a couple of years from now after the 360 is officially EOL. Also I bet the Xbone will suddenly be selling for $399 in a couple of weeks.

I am disappointed by only one thing that PS+ is needed for multiplayer games. Having a valid and "in good standing" PSN account is fine but requiring a subscription to play some other developer's game was never good at all especially if they want to foster things like F2P MMOs and MOBA.

@seppli: Cool. Hey, I was wondering, you enjoy Battlefield quite a bit, do you harbor any excitement for the upcoming Battlefront game?

Never played Battlefront, but I like the idea of mixing in a lot of cannonfodder AI into a Battlefield-style online multiplayer experience. I think Battlefront might just turn out to be the DOTA-take on Battlefield-style online multiplayer I am clamouring for.

Still ways off though, and DICE LA is essentially Danger Close. Wait and see I guess. The possibilities are definitely exciting though.

I think you are misunderstanding what Battlefront is. Its Battlefield: Star Wars. There is no Dota component. Sounds like maybe you should check out Super Monday Night Combat.

Super Monday Night Combat is exactly like a MOBA/FPS game. Maybe you should load it back up on Steam and play it next to LoL or something simple to understand.

And the original Battlefront was pretty much the same thing, minus stationary turrets though I believe.

maybe publishers can do all of that on their end, at which point I kinda shrug and go "OK, so that just means that instead of Sony getting money from it, now the publishers do.".

I'm totally okay with that because if a publisher launches a game with ridiculous crap fees, I just WON'T buy it, plain and simple. This option is 100x better than console imposed policies across the board.

The credit card flew out of my wallet immediately to preorder. I rarely preorder anything and have never cancelled. Sony, don't screw this up.

If Respawn's TitanFall is on XB360, Xbox One, and PC doesn't that make it less exclusive?

Also, isn't half of what Gaikai does being a cloud PC game provider? And, EA 'is' one of fifty publishers Gaikai has in its stable. I sort of remember that Gaikai was going to provide streaming of ITS games onto PS4, that being the other half of what Gaikai does, so yeah Titan on PS4 is not impossible.

To be honest, I would probably just buy a One if I really wanted to play Titan, but this does prove we live in interesting times.

I wouldn't say it was a stunner, more fan pandering than anything... It was good. Notice how they announced the used game thing right before the bullet point to say multiplayer requires 'Plus'. They were little things, not a big deal to me. I'm going PS4 but I was actually really impressed with the MS show, MGS gave me goosebumps, best opener I've seen in years and Titanfall makes me already jealous, thought it looked better than Destiny, has Infinity Ward DNA all over it! Also remember XB1 has Kinect bundled, PS4 camera additional and I think Mircosoft made a better case for multimedia... Music/Movies Unlimited?..

Don't get me wrong PS4 looks awesome, but I totally get why people would say Xbox One.

The Microsoft pre-E3 conference that was aimed quite obviously at investors (I guess most of the gaming media didn't pick up on this, but investors really only know about four games: CoD, Halo, Madden, FIFA, and they know about the biggest sports brand (NFL), it was 100% clearly for investors, not for gamers, not for the gaming media, not even for the regular media or casual gamers).

After that conference, I was thinking, ok, I can see how this could fit into my home. Replaces the BD player, and has the advantage that it just goes between the FIOS box and the TV, simplifies everything for my girlfriend and her technologically challenged mother and my newborn daughter will be big enough in a couple years to enjoy dancing games in no fail mode or something.

At $500 I can still see it fitting into my life...when it goes down to $300 or less.

The PS4 doesn't fit into my life. I already don't have a console hooked up to my main television, I've switched pretty much all my AAA gaming to PC because this console cycle was so long, I still play "console style" games, but I do it on a PC with a 360 controller. I'm not going to hook up a PS4 to my main TV and further complicate the family situation (I might get a bigger display for my "office," but why would I pay $400 for a game console when I already have a PC that is pretty close to that level of power), and I'm sure not going to pay extra to get a camera for motion gaming for my daughter and girlfriend without the advantage of the kind of single-stream media that XBone was offering.

I wasn't super thrilled about anything Microsoft was saying, but there are some interesting ideas there about social gaming in terms of sharing games with online friends (good for, um, adults whose friends are all over the country). Having skype in there is great too because when my daughter's grandma is at home overseas we do a hell of a lot of video chatting.

PS4 seems to be shooting for an audience that's short on money or that plays games on a very short timeline. You have to think that rental is going to be figured out on XBone, that's a no-brainer that just has to be arranged with Redbox somehow (they already produce for rental only DVDs and BDs for Netflix etc that haven't got any extra content on them, I can see them doing something similar for games as well). I guess I'm just disappointed at both offerings. Going to PS4 was always going to be a long shot for me, because I HATE the Playstation controller with the passion of a thousand exploding suns, but now I just feel like I've been walked away from by the console industry.

Yeah same here, I have a PC capable of running pretty much every game on high. I was ready to skip the next generation of consoles but I'm going to get a PS4 now not only for whatever exclusives and console friendlier games they'll have, but it's mostly to "vote with my dollars" so to speak; for them to be so focused towards the consumer, I just... I just have to reward that behavior!

Apart from quietly saying you need PS+ to play games online on PS4, Sony completely wiped the floor with Microsoft. It was both hilarious and amazing to watch. Possibly the best press conference I've seen, and that was including the technical glitches.

I like Halo

I digg the look of Quantum Break

Ryse looked ok.

Sony's exclusives just didn't grab me but that might just be because ive primarily been a XBOX and PC gamer this last gen.

I get you, I feel slightly the other way however I've always preferred Japanese studios so that its self swings me Nintendo/sony's way. I thought Ryse was the best thing in that conference. but can I ask you a question, do you not feel like MS knew they had to show a Halo trailer? I bet you wont see anything of that game for ages it will very early in development I think. I'd guess that that trailer was made along side halo 4, therefore to me it feels like a trailer for the sake of it. Where as, might you have been more impressed with sony if they did the same? If they said look here is a prerendered trailer of game you wont see for almost two years. I don't know really look at the Last Guardian and ver 13, they have possibly skipped a generation but where shown far to early

I liked how the talk going into E3 was that people were giving Sony a free pass on the DRM stuff even though they'd certainly be doing exactly the same thing as Microsoft....

Then when they came out and said they'd do none of that, the cheers seemed very appropriate :)

The biggest thing I wanted Sony to show me was the PS4 interface in real-time and interface innovations a la Microsoft's smartglass, twitch and showing the slick queuing process for a Killer Instinct match while playing Ryse. Sony has made allusions to similar systems and tablet "support" on PS4 but the exclusive lineup didn't get me, (though I understand everyone's taste may vary), remotely close to the excitement of XBox One's and I really like how smooth task swapping and multitasking seems to be on the XBox. Of course, there's that issue of price, that's pretty rough. Then again, I'm hearing the PS4 camera may or may not be sold separately?

And if it's every game? Related: Do you buy stuff on Steam, by any chance? [I ask both of these questions without sarcasm or bad intent. Legitimate curiosity here.]

(I should note that I'm well out of the consoles at this point. Have been a PC gamer almost exclusively for a few years now, and I don't see that changing any time soon. I also haven't bought a used game since 2006, and have literally never traded in a game because it was such a ripoff. Next to none of this DRM stuff, used games stuff, online authorization, or the like affects me, as even the always-on style stuff wouldn't change my gaming habits as I'm lucky and have a mostly stable, really fast connection. That being said, when my internet does go out it tends to mean something's gone really wrong and it will be out for a good long while.)

Does anyone know if the PS4 at $399 has a controller in the box?

I'm remembering back to the old days when consoles might not even include one controller (late model systems).

What is $399 getting you? What are they cutting out? I think we're all assuming no camera in the box, but what else is missing to hit that price point?

The core system *should* cost more than the XBone's components.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Microsoft will just come back and say "well, if you keep the disc in the system when you play then you don't need to check in every 24 hours". I hope. But, the more the drive is used the lower the lifespan, right?

Well I'm definitely leaning heavily toward getting a PS4 now. TBH alt of it is just I don't trust Microsoft anymore and Sony have shown they want to cater to me not the Publishers that want to rip their customers off.

As someone who's firmly been in the corner of Microsoft since the inception of the original Xbox, considering getting anything other that an Xbox One first wasn't a question. When they announced BluRay, it was seemingly the nail in the coffin for the PS4. I pre-ordered my Xbox One after yesterdays press conference and was legitimately excited by their showing. Ryse looked neat. Quantum Break has me intrigued. TitanFall looked AMAZING. All this, plus Microsoft's known quantities are just more my cup of tea. Having no problem with them blocking used game sales and the always online requirement would have impacted me all of twice in the last 10 years, the Xbox One was an easy choice. I'm tired of Kinect and the camera bugs me a little, but was willing to make due with it.

Then, the Sony press conference happened. Fanboyism aside, I though Microsoft had gotten their foot back in the door. Everything they showed seemed more appealing. Then Jack Tretton slammed the door shut. Like I previously stated, Microsoft's policies don't bother me, but the manner in which Tretton went after Microsoft was unlike anything I've ever seen. The message Sony is sending to consumers/gamers is hard not to get behind.

I've got both consoles per-ordered now. I'll ultimately only get one (to start). I'm in a position where I need to choose between the company that's been rock solid for me the last 10 years, or make the jump to Sony which seems to have a ton of momentum by fans and developers alike. If you would have told me a week ago I'd be leaning Sony, I'd have told you to play in traffic. Crazy what 15 minutes can change.

Sony saved one of my favorite hobby with that press conference and made me feel like a little kid again. Outside of the Vita stuff, i loved every moment of the press conference.

They made me realize that there are still a lot of GREAT titles still coming out for the Ps3(TLOU, BEYOND, Rain) and i thought the Ps4 games they showed were varied and great as well:

-That Infamous: Second Son trailer made it one of my top 5 most anticipated next gen games, looking VERY GOOD.

-Watch_ Dogs looked great and i can't wait to sink my teeth into it

-Final Fantasy XV looks amaaaaazing. Hopefully it's still open world, and i really like the ARPG direction.

-Kingdom Hearts III was amazing, of course.

-I look forward to playing A Realm Reborn on Ps4.

-The Order looked interesting

-Destiny looked marvelous.

-All the indie stuff looked fun.

Then of course Sony went cold blooded on microsoft, which launched the conference into historic levels. Sony owned the moment and was great to see.

It's funny how Microsoft did pretty much everything to alienate their consumer base, much like Sony had with the PS3 release.

And even though I've had a Playstation since Uncharted 2, I've been a Microsoft follower for 8 years, but I can't abide with what they are doing with XBOX ONE. I was really hoping for Sony to pick up the slack and not fuck it up like they had this generation and looks like they delivered.

Thank god for competitive environment.

Cya in one generation Microsoft, because this one is all Sony.

@seppli: seems to make sense. MS is designing for right now when lots of people buy discs, and watch lots of cable TV. Sony might be taking a longer view of things, assuming that in two or three years lots of people will be buying mostly digital, and getting most of their video from individual services instead of paying a cable subscription.
