Sony's E3 2013 Press Briefing: A Stone Cold Stunner

If there was a thing you wanted Sony to do at today's press event, they probably did it.

That was a hell of a thing to watch.

We've seen the box, seen more games, and gotten the price. Hard to argue with any of what we saw, really.
We've seen the box, seen more games, and gotten the price. Hard to argue with any of what we saw, really.

After a day of mostly expected, occasionally exciting, as often disappointing announcements from Microsoft and various third-party publishers, I was all settled in, expecting Sony to maybe have a few fun new things to show. I didn't expect anything too garish. I didn't expect to be bowled over. I didn't expect much surprise. I sure as hell didn't expect what I got.

Instead of just another half-enthusiastic press event, Sony came to E3 looking for a fight. Early on the tone was set for something pretty great, but by the time we hit the halfway point, it almost looked like Sony was actively mocking Microsoft's tepid announcements and various system-related controversies. And that was before Sony actually started mocking Microsoft quite directly for all those things and then some.

Sony showed confidence at tonight's press event. It showed swagger, awareness of its own audience, and, most importantly, games. Man, did it ever show a whole bunch of games. Even if you didn't love every single one of them, I'd be amazed if you couldn't find at least one or two in there to get a little bit excited about.

Sure, things started out a bit slow. Jack Tretton was quick to promote the Vita and and the PS3, showing off a couple of new things (Walking Dead on Vita), as well as some games we already knew about, like Tearaway for the Vita, and The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls for PS3. That last one was a particularly odd demo, showing the lead character played by Ellen Page in some heavy CIA training that looked more evocative of something like Zero Dark Thirty. Presumably, that game is still about ghosts and stuff.

Transistor was one of several noteworthy indie games to come out heavily in favor of the PlayStation platform.
Transistor was one of several noteworthy indie games to come out heavily in favor of the PlayStation platform.

But once the PS4 stuff kicked in, it didn't let up. After a bit of brief house-cleaning regarding video apps (you may be shocked to learn that there will be video apps), the games just started flowing. Solid trailers for known quantities like inFamous: Second Son, DriveClub, and Killzone: Shadow Fall, were joined by Ready at Dawn's steampunky looking shooter The Order: 1886, a new game that unfortunately only had a CG trailer (albeit kind of a cool looking one). Third-party games like Destiny, Watch_Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Elder Scrolls Online got lengthy, mostly impressive demos (unfortunately, the AC IV build crapped out part of the way through), while Square Enix managed to bowl over the entire audience with trailers for Final Fantasy XV (formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII) and, believe it or not, Kingdom Hearts III. Hell, we even found out WBIE and Avalanche Studios are making a goddamn Mad Max game. Who saw that one coming?

There was an incredibly strong indie presence as well, kicked off by Supergiant Games coming out to introduce Transistor, which will debut on the PS4, as well as PC. Other indie titles now exclusively headed to Sony platforms (on consoles, anyway) include Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Don't Starve, Outlast, and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee New N' Tasty. These announcements were made in tandem with Sony unveiling its indie self-publishing initiative, which will allow indie studios to bring their games to the PlayStation Store free of any publisher deal nonsense.

That announcement joined several others that gave the impression Sony had been listening to criticism directed toward the Xbox One. People were already high on all the game demos when Tretton returned to confirm that the PS4 would feature none of the restrictive DRM features Microsoft planned to employ with its new console. Online checks would not be required to play single-player games offline, nor would there be any restrictions on used, disc-based games. All this culminated in the price announcement: $399.99 in North America, $100 less than Microsoft's $499 Xbox One price point. Sony's only negative news--the revelation that multiplayer gaming would be folded into the PlayStation Plus subscription service--was mostly offset by the volume of additional game content coming to Plus subscribers, as well as the news that other net-based media services wouldn't be locked behind the paywall.

I didn't care an iota about Destiny prior to today's conference, but the demo shown during the event finally got me on board.
I didn't care an iota about Destiny prior to today's conference, but the demo shown during the event finally got me on board.

Given all of this, it's hard to look at Sony's press conference as anything other than an exceptionally brutal blow to any momentum Microsoft had at this point. Where Microsoft appeared monolithic and generally unconcerned with currying any additional favor with consumers or developers, Sony looked fluid, adaptable, and self-aware. It showed a variety of games that spanned genres, tones, and scopes, offering a little something for everyone.

By all means, the PlayStation 4 could still find ways to disappoint consumers--not all of those games are going to turn out to be great, obviously. But in terms of what you would want from a console maker's E3 press presentation, Sony absolutely knocked it out of the park, and it did so by simply demonstrating a strong understanding of what its consumers would conceivably want, rather than just assuming that consumers will take whatever it feels like giving them.

I've been a Playstation owner since the original PS1 (I also owned the original Xbox) but I've been also impressed with how the 360 has turned into such a great machine with good services. I was really on the fence once 2013 rolled around and was looking forward to seeing how the new consoles turned out. I'm not interested in always-online, but I can handle it. The whole idea of Kinect doesn't interest me - and I've been a very happy owner of a PS+ account for a while now. I can afford $399 AND $499 so the price isn't a huge deal to me personally - but after this E3 Sony has definitely won me over again. I DO trade in my used games, I DO hate the idea of DRM and I DO like the Dualshock over the Xbox controller. PS4 for me.

This conference single handedly made me care about E3 this year.

Care about your consumers. It's such a simple idea. It's good to know that one company understands. Or is at least so good at faking it that I'll let myself believe.

Yeah yeah Nintendo. I hear you. You're cute. But the adults are talking, so just keep playing with your Legos.

Legos can be pretty awesome, if done right.

No, I'm not getting it, I can't relate to anyone who thinks "fantasy sports" is a selling point for a console. All that is just random crap that would interfere with playing games.

But I can tell from the way you wax lyrical about "cloud processing" that you're deep into the Kool-Aid. You're a marketers dream.

All yesterday did was get me excited for both.. but neither made me feel like i had to go out and immediately pre-order a new console.. still a lot of time before holiday.. would probably lead more towards the xbox at this point since the games stood out more to me.. whereas the Used Games/Internet Connectivity doesn't affect me personally.. it was just cool to get the feeling that a new generation is upon us..

For me, Xbox ONE is a complete non-starter, irrespective of whatever games it may or may not have. The reason starts and ends with consumers rights, and Microsoft's clear disdain for them. It is not a PC, and therefore can never be Steam. It is, I therefore conclude, a bag of shit.

This was pretty much the culmination of the last few years. Crazy good PS+, better indie relationships, and overall respect for customers after the PS3 launch debacle. I didn't expect them to go this hard, but it was a sight to see.

It didn't help that outside of Titanfall the Microsoft offering this morning wasn't that great, and their attempts to compete on indie games and free games for members paled in comparison. The price and DRM were the highlights, but there were a lot of things that keep pushing me Sony's direction.

The Sony used game video already has over 1.5 million views and over 135,000 likes on youtube. The Sony Conference hasn't even been over for a day. It looks like the people have spoken up against anti consumer Microsoft policies and have sided with Sony.

Well said my friend.

I will say that the $499 MS price looks too high right now, but there have been rumors for weeks that they will offer a subsidy for 2 year XBL contracts. I wouldnt be surprised if they launch with a $399 w/ 2 year XBL agreement price point.

I'm 100% certain at this point that it has been proven false. There was no point for MS to hold anything back in their announcement especially if it's positive. If MS didn't announce subsidized price yesterday (they didn't even give a hint), it means there is no such thing.

See - i disagree with this. I think they dont show all their cards until they know what Sony is doing. This is how Sony was able to capitalize on the whole Used Game fiasco and price point so well.

If "slow loading"[citation needed] discs are a problem, I'm sure Sony will be happy to sell you the game from their Online store, just as they have been with the PS3. What was your problem again?

Not to mention pretty much every PS3 game in the past 3 years have had mandatory installs.

Yeah, it should be noted that the PS4 most certainly is capable of all the DRM stuff the Xone does, the main difference is that they seem to leave it to the publisher if they want to use it - and it's safe to assume the big ones like EA, Ubisoft and Activision will, and that Sony won't stop them, while Xone even uses online authentication down on the OS level regardless of the publisher's opinion.

Sony seems to have handled the pre-console-launch hype perfectly. This is actually one of those rare occasions where seeing a massive corporation nailing their PR is as enjoyable to witness as those glorious, out-of-touch, train wreck affairs. The build-up to their marvellous finish during the press conference really is something to behold.

I'm excited to see how this'll play out once the consoles are actually out in the wild. Worst case scenario: the PR impressions are spot-on and MS somehow wins with their media center strategy while Sony's game focus bites them in the ass. But that's (hopefully) just my paranoid, cynical self speculating. For now I'm happy with the thrill and excitement I wasn't sure I'd get out of the impending console launch.

How many first-year exclusives are usually worth playing? I'm no expert, but I guess on the PS3 it was Uncharted, and on the Xbox360 side a Halo or Gears? My point is, it's very odd to me to chose one or the other based primarily on what was shown at this event.

The idea that you can just "count them and there's your answer!" just seems borderline insane.

We still have more events (gamescon) before these release, do we know how many if any exclusives either party held back for that? No? Then if you're only going by exclusives, shouldn't you wait till closer to release so you get the count right?

None of the actually exclusive titles (which aren't that many once we remove the 'console' and 'timed' modifiers) shown by any of the parties are such that I feel "I must play that!".

Add to that that some are so far out we're just better off forgetting about them (that Black Tusk title for instance).

If nothing else, Sony hasn't played the Naughty Dog card yet, and to me that's quite an important card.

I am so torn about this stuff. I was ready to preorder the X1 but knew I had to wait to see if we got a price from Sony. I fully expected $499 from them too. Then this happens.

My mind tells me, the PS4 is compelling for the price, but I am one of those who believes in the new kinect from what I have seen and the gestures and switching between games and apps on the X1 did grab me. It really did. And i knew I would get games.

Sony's exclusives, honestly, beyond a few gems, always seem like shit to me. Catering to the Square Enix crowd and their lame franchises. Killzone, I detest. KZ2 was the game that I got a PS3 for and was burned. Infamous I never had fun with. Really I loved Uncharted 2 and can't wait to dig into the Last of Us, but those are on the PS3. The rest is 3rd party. I want Forza. TitanFall looks so cool but might just get that for PC.

As for the DRM stuff, I still think the debate is out. We know that PS4 games will all be available day one digitally. So what is to keep a publisher from doing the MS thing and going with digital only or selling discs with codes? And I think Sony is delaying what should happen, where games migrate more to a steam like environment and we get sales and deals that publishers can set and games aren't hard to find after the fact.

I guess I am still going with the Xbox 1 because I want my Halo, I want my Forza, and what I told my brother, I want to use that 360 controller. I think the PS layout has been crap for years and it goes back to thinking the Dreamcast controller was the right way to do it, albeit missing a stick. At this point in my life, I want more out of my console. I am into sports and TV and movies. I understand Sony won E3, but that was because it appealed to the small section of gamers that read this website, that keep up with the news on games. DRM and used games, stuff I thought was silly to even complain about. Price? Well the Kinect comes with the Xbox 1 and I know that a lot of families will like that.

@shiftplusone: And then they showed how many new IPs? Come on, Sony fanboys...the PS4 looks like a dumbed-down box with zero good exclusive content compared to exclusive IP after exclusive IP at the MS show. How any sane individual who enjoys games could watch those two events and come out believing Sony is delivering a better product is beyond me. Is lending/renting games THAT big of a deal to you? Because that and $100 and a distinct lack of content are what you get from the PS4. MS trotted out far better original IP in both the AAA and Indie markets (yes, I'll take an amazing looking NEW game from the creators of Superbrothers over a retread of Oddworld anyway).

I preordered my Xbox One last night after watching both conferences in their entirety. For weeks gamers have been saying it's "all about the games", which MS delivered (both in new IP and in new content/mechanics) and Sony did not. Only one of these two boxes feels "next gen" to me in terms of "doing new and interesting things with games; pushing the envelope" and that is clearly MS. It all feels very PS2/OG Xbox era to me, when it was announced that the OGXbox was to use broadband only and people were up in arms, look what that step did to push gaming forward...and again we have MS pushing tech and Sony playing it conservatively, happy to give you a box that literally does nothing new or different from their existing box for $100 less than a company who is offering you the future. *SMH*

I disagree with Alex here. The Sony conference was tepid, at best. Right up until they kicked Microsoft in the nuts at the end. Almost everything Sony showed was a known quantity. Either they had already shown the game or it was already a PS staple franchise. The only thing in the whole show that was exciting was the price (which was pretty exciting). The DRM thing was just Sony taking advantage of everyone flipping out over Microsoft's bad press. Keep in mind, Sony is still pushing non-sharable, download games (remember the whole "play as you download" thing?). The Xbox show wasn't great but it had a lot more to show. They had lot more exclusives. Of which, could be due to the DRM thing. Bigger game companies are going to love that and be more likely to give them favor. Game switching was cool too.

Not trying to steer this in any one directions. I don't plan on buying either one. Sticking to PC here. I just don't want people getting blinded by one or two things that may or may not matter as much as the hype makes them seem to matter. It's easy to lose the forest for the trees so soon after these shows. In the end, consumers should come out on top. This crazy, cut-throat competition is almost always great for us.

Sony really nailed it. It felt much more grandiose than Microsoft's conference. The Dark Sorcerer tech demo looked great. FFXV looked a bit linear, but it wasn't an FPS so that was cool. I liked the focus on indie games as well.

Mandatory PS+ is lame, but there is a lot of value in that service. I'll probably hang on to my PS3 for a while, but if I had the cashflow I'd try to pick up a PS4 around launch.

@sarahsdad: Has Sony yet announced PS4 digital game trading/selling etc? I may have missed it if they did. At the moment it looks like Microsoft's crazy used/borrow/trade rules may actually be designed specifically to cover the move to digital games as they mentioned, albeit vaguely, digital game trading. That's one of the things I am most interested in and hoping to hear more about from both companies as I will likely download all if not most of my games from here on, leaving any disc-based lending rules irrelevant, (to me).

On a similar note, I wish games downloaded without a disc through XBLM wouldn't require the 24-hour check. How can I lend someone a game disc I don't have?

@seppli: seems to make sense. MS is designing for right now when lots of people buy discs, and watch lots of cable TV. Sony might be taking a longer view of things, assuming that in two or three years lots of people will be buying mostly digital, and getting most of their video from individual services instead of paying a cable subscription.

It's funny how Microsoft did pretty much everything to alienate their consumer base, much like Sony had with the PS3 release.

And even though I've had a Playstation since Uncharted 2, I've been a Microsoft follower for 8 years, but I can't abide with what they are doing with XBOX ONE. I was really hoping for Sony to pick up the slack and not fuck it up like they had this generation and looks like they delivered.

Thank god for competitive environment.

Cya in one generation Microsoft, because this one is all Sony.

Sony saved one of my favorite hobby with that press conference and made me feel like a little kid again. Outside of the Vita stuff, i loved every moment of the press conference.

They made me realize that there are still a lot of GREAT titles still coming out for the Ps3(TLOU, BEYOND, Rain) and i thought the Ps4 games they showed were varied and great as well:

-That Infamous: Second Son trailer made it one of my top 5 most anticipated next gen games, looking VERY GOOD.

-Watch_ Dogs looked great and i can't wait to sink my teeth into it

-Final Fantasy XV looks amaaaaazing. Hopefully it's still open world, and i really like the ARPG direction.

-Kingdom Hearts III was amazing, of course.

-I look forward to playing A Realm Reborn on Ps4.

-The Order looked interesting

-Destiny looked marvelous.

-All the indie stuff looked fun.

Then of course Sony went cold blooded on microsoft, which launched the conference into historic levels. Sony owned the moment and was great to see.

As someone who's firmly been in the corner of Microsoft since the inception of the original Xbox, considering getting anything other that an Xbox One first wasn't a question. When they announced BluRay, it was seemingly the nail in the coffin for the PS4. I pre-ordered my Xbox One after yesterdays press conference and was legitimately excited by their showing. Ryse looked neat. Quantum Break has me intrigued. TitanFall looked AMAZING. All this, plus Microsoft's known quantities are just more my cup of tea. Having no problem with them blocking used game sales and the always online requirement would have impacted me all of twice in the last 10 years, the Xbox One was an easy choice. I'm tired of Kinect and the camera bugs me a little, but was willing to make due with it.

Then, the Sony press conference happened. Fanboyism aside, I though Microsoft had gotten their foot back in the door. Everything they showed seemed more appealing. Then Jack Tretton slammed the door shut. Like I previously stated, Microsoft's policies don't bother me, but the manner in which Tretton went after Microsoft was unlike anything I've ever seen. The message Sony is sending to consumers/gamers is hard not to get behind.

I've got both consoles per-ordered now. I'll ultimately only get one (to start). I'm in a position where I need to choose between the company that's been rock solid for me the last 10 years, or make the jump to Sony which seems to have a ton of momentum by fans and developers alike. If you would have told me a week ago I'd be leaning Sony, I'd have told you to play in traffic. Crazy what 15 minutes can change.

Well I'm definitely leaning heavily toward getting a PS4 now. TBH alt of it is just I don't trust Microsoft anymore and Sony have shown they want to cater to me not the Publishers that want to rip their customers off.

Does anyone know if the PS4 at $399 has a controller in the box?

I'm remembering back to the old days when consoles might not even include one controller (late model systems).

What is $399 getting you? What are they cutting out? I think we're all assuming no camera in the box, but what else is missing to hit that price point?

The core system *should* cost more than the XBone's components.

According to the pre-order picture at Amazon, it includes one controller.

Looks like Engadget just posted this description too:

I have a sneaking suspicion that Microsoft will just come back and say "well, if you keep the disc in the system when you play then you don't need to check in every 24 hours". I hope. But, the more the drive is used the lower the lifespan, right?

Persona 5 or Valkyria Chronicles 4?

*checks news feed*

Nope. Guess I'll fix my launch, overheated cheaply-made PS3 while I wait for the games I actually want.

Man. I can't wait to buy my PS4. :D I'm so stoked. Hmmmmm. I'm surprised that there haven't been a lot of PC games shown though.

I really liked the Final Fantasy Versus game but that was about it. I have already preordered by XBOXONE. But if I see some more games I might get both. Can't wait for the next gen to get here!!

maybe publishers can do all of that on their end, at which point I kinda shrug and go "OK, so that just means that instead of Sony getting money from it, now the publishers do.".

I'm totally okay with that because if a publisher launches a game with ridiculous crap fees, I just WON'T buy it, plain and simple. This option is 100x better than console imposed policies across the board.

The credit card flew out of my wallet immediately to preorder. I rarely preorder anything and have never cancelled. Sony, don't screw this up.

And if it's every game? Related: Do you buy stuff on Steam, by any chance? [I ask both of these questions without sarcasm or bad intent. Legitimate curiosity here.]

(I should note that I'm well out of the consoles at this point. Have been a PC gamer almost exclusively for a few years now, and I don't see that changing any time soon. I also haven't bought a used game since 2006, and have literally never traded in a game because it was such a ripoff. Next to none of this DRM stuff, used games stuff, online authorization, or the like affects me, as even the always-on style stuff wouldn't change my gaming habits as I'm lucky and have a mostly stable, really fast connection. That being said, when my internet does go out it tends to mean something's gone really wrong and it will be out for a good long while.)
