Sony Shutters Liverpool Studio, AKA Psygnosis

After nearly 30 years in business under various names, the studio behind the WipeOut series is no more.

The final image tweeted out from the official WipeOut Twitter account.
The final image tweeted out from the official WipeOut Twitter account.

Very few companies in the video game industry can proclaim to have a history that stretches all the way back to the seminal years of the industry we now hold so very dear. Sony Liverpool, once known as Psygnosis, was such a company. Until today.

Sony has announced that it will be shuttering the Liverpool studio, as part of a restructuring of its UK properties. The console maker's Liverpool offices will remain open, but the studio, which had in recent years been responsible for the WipeOut franchise, as well as Formula One racing titles, is finished.

Sony released the following statement on the closure.

As part of SCE Worldwide Studios, we do regular reviews to ensure that the resources we have can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects in an increasingly competitive market place. As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current and planned projects for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to our European Studios.

It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements.

However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers.

Our Liverpool Facility will continue to operate, housing a number of other vital WWS!E and SCEE Departments.

This should not take anything away from the great work WWS are doing and the incredible games and services that we have made, and continue to make, both for this coming year and further in the future.

Originally founded in 1984 by Ian Hetherington and David Lawson, Psygnosis actually began as more of a publisher than developer, bringing out such heralded Amiga titles as Shadow of the Beast, and the original Lemmings games.

The company had been known as Sony Liverpool since 2001, but the developer had been under Sony's banner since the mid-'90s, where it developed properties for the original PlayStation, including G-Police, Colony Wars, and of course, WipeOut, which became the studio's most recognizable franchise.

Psygnosis also had an amusing run of peculiar licensed games under its belt, including SNES/Genesis/Sega CD titles based on '90s horror films Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as a PlayStation game loosely based on the Spice Girls cinematic tour de force Spice World.

The studio's final project was WipeOut 2048 for the PlayStation Vita.

Had a bit of a bitch about this earlier. It's sad to see any studio close, especially one with a tenure like Psygnosis, but it's especially biting considering their particular legacy. Psygnosis were a studio that made games very much synonymous with the Playstation brand in Europe early on, and it was Wipeout that Sony demoed in nightclubs to directly appeal to the 18+ demographic. Not only did they lend credence to Sony as a console manufacturer in the beginning (as in "I don't think they'd be where they are today without some of those games"), but they were a large part of pushing gaming into the mainstream in Europe and making it socially acceptable for adults. "Sad day for the game industry" doesn't do it justice.

Destruction Derby and Wipeout were the very first games I have ever own on a Play Station. I'm really sad to see them and their awesome logo fade away. Thank you so much for both of those games you guys.

I got my Playstation 2nd hand, & it came with 2 Psygnosis titles (among others), Destruction Derby 2 & Wipeout. Between those wonderful games & the incredible time-sink of Lemmings, they were a terrific studio. Shame to see them go

Wipeout HD is something that, to this day, I hold as one of the greatest arcade racers of all time.

Apparently their next gen wipeout game which was 18 months along was also canned. This SUCKS.

@HarlechQuinn: Thanks for putting that up, I always remembered in the early PC days of seeing the Psygnosis games & how they almost had the same awesome look to them as something out of the Heavy Metal magazine covers. Too bad they got stuck doing a bunch of less than great games for Sony & best of luck to whoever was let go from that studio.

I guess this is how you do business these days in the gaming industry: absorb or dissolve. I would like to see another developor take on WipeOut because the stuff Psygnosis did was so different from other racers and I don't want it to go away.

These guys made a game that shaped my very childhood. But hey, maybe they'll take the initiative other closed studios have and form a new group to bring back their amazing work. I can only hope.

This was exactly what I was going to say. They were THE key PS developer in Europe, early on, at least. Without their games, which had a very specific identity to them, Sony probably wouldn't have been able to succesfully pitch to the mass-market 18-35 crowd of the era as they did so brilliantly, they wouldn't have destroyed Sega and Nintendo, and the games industry would be completely different. They convinced people that playing videogames was a viable alternative to going to nightclubs and taking drugs and having sex!

Wipeout, for a long time, was Sony's Mario or Sonic (at least in UK and Europe), so strongly was it identified with the PlayStation and what it represented.

Also, the vast majority of what they released on PS1 was amazing, and often very ahead of its time. Sad.

With the game industry starting to crumble, it's good to see that the first people to lose their jobs are the ones who create content that has any semblance of uniqueness. Video games are dumb.

So no chance for more Colony Wars? The introduction cinema to Colony Wars still gives me a chill...they just don't do fake James Earl Jones like that anymore.

They have to bring back Colony Wars, WipeOut, or the other IPs at some point, they are just too good as properties to leave dead.

really sad to see them go they were a great studio with some great games throughout their history, I don't see why Sony would close them down compared to other Uk studios, no disrespect to evolution studios but why close Studio Liverpool over them, the Motorstorm IP is ok but i wouldn't put it on par with the Wipeout series which has done pretty well for Sony on every console they have released it on, I believe Studio Liverpool were 12-18 months in on the PS4 Wipeout game it could have been a launch title then we would have had something decent at launch, now what.

It's American English for sure, and it's using the infinitive as the present-tense form of the verb, which seems weird.

UK people would just say 'shuts'.

this is a pile of flaming garbage, the wipeout series continues to sell well I cant understand why Sony would shutter these guys unless A: they want to farm future projects out to other countries where labour units are cheaper (trend of the industry in general) B: Liverpool dont have the appetite for more WipeOut titles. In any case, its a big loss for wipeout fans and for the UK games industry as a whole, hopefully it wont affect future investment.

I am seriously bummed to read this news. WipeOut is one of the most original, standout franchises in a genre that's overloaded with repetition. It's also one of my favorite games. To think this franchise ends like this is depressing. Hopefully the team reforms and takes the Psygnosis name again. This dev team deserves to stick around.

Not happy to see Liverpool go, but I'm not sure you get to call yourself original when you've been iterating basically the same core design for 16 years.
