Sony's Trophy Mandate

Sony is looking to make 2009 the year of the trophy.

Trophy support, guaranteed!
Trophy support, guaranteed!
Support for Sony's PlayStation 3 trophy system has been pretty sketchy so far. I imagine this is due in no small part to the fact that up to this point, trophies have been entirely optional. I had heard grumblings from developers at E3 that it wasn't going to stay that way for long. Sure enough, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has, according to videogamer.com, stated that trophy support will be a mandatory feature for all new PlayStation 3 releases as of January 2009. Considering that this has been the case with achievements on the Xbox 360 since day one, it only makes sense, though I have to wonder if this will have an effect on the release dates of PS3 games set for Q1 09.

This is certainly a minor step in the right direction for the PlayStation 3, but it also feels like Sony's still playing catch-up. What say you, multiplatform owners? Does consistent trophy support give the PlayStation 3 version an edge?

It sucks when you see a multiplat release comes out with no trophy support. Look at MKvsDC. No trophies. Why the hell not?

Trophies do not give an edge to PS3 games. It will make them equal to Xbox360 games in that respect. However, there will be other aspects of the game that will determine who has the edge. Graphics+controls+online system+ number of disks+load times+ price+exclusive content.

Finally!  By "grumblings", do you mean that developers are annoyed by mandatory trophies on PS3?  Can the PS3 trophies mirror X360 achievements or do MSFT and Sony have rules against that?

I feel quite sad saying this but I don't think I would evem consider buying a PS3 at this point and to be honest the biggest reason is that I wouldn't buy multiplatform games because they don't have achievements,  That's pretty bad huh?  To be fair the other big reason is that the PS3 has much worse online support, that completely puts me off having okayed my 360 for so long

PS3 had the edge before, in my opinion. Damn, I hate achievements. I have 1,715 "accidental" achievement points. Obviously no one really cares about my opinion so I will just sum it up with... They are pointless.

I wouldn't say an edge, but it keeps the PS3 up to par with the xbox360. Now instead of just playing the game through, gamers have another incentive to achieve challenges to get those trophies.

Incrediblebulk, you have your right to an opinion, but you're welcoming bashing with fanboy comments like that.  PS3 has much worse online support?  How so?  You back your statement up with NO facts and not even an OPINION.  So XBL has game invites.  You also now have a XMB-like setup on XBL that red rings systems and locks up the console for most owners.  Read any of the Sony press releases and you'll realize they going to be caught up in features and beyond with Home looming for the US.

Packfan104L4: there is a big difference in the online support side of things, the video aspect is the biggest, streaming netflix movies is the bomb. also there are many people on the PS3 that still dont use mics, i hate playing in a room with no mics. and if you look at atleast the US sales Data, the 360 is still pulling away each month that it is out. and as far as features go, the 360 with the NXE is taking the next massive leap to become a multi media powerhouse.

I don't think it gives the PS3 version an edge, it just kind of takes away the arguement for buying a game for 360 for achievements.

I don't think it gives the PS3 version an edge but as only a PS3 owner at least it doesn't make me feel I being screwed out of an extra feature.  It feels all this is taking way to long though it took a year for frame rates and other performance issues to be somewhat equal 6 months to mandate trophies and 2 years later I'm still waiting for custom soundtracks other then Burnout.

My gamer score is over 30 000 on xbox there is no way I am going to invest that kind of time in to the PS3.  I only have a PS3 for the blu ray and the exclusive titles (which up until recently there weren't too many).

Say I?  Nay.

I used to give a rat arse about Achievements back when it was a new idea, it felt like something at the time.  It felt like the old high score board with friends names above your own.
Then developers started throwing in any old crud, and some lunatics suddenly felt that "they had a right" to be able to get all achievements in a bought game without effort.  The word achievement somehow lost it's meaning on them.

For anyone who forgot, it means you achieved something.

So adding Trophies to PS3 games is if anything Sony trying not to admit that Microsoft were onto something good (albeit for a while) and all it is doing now is aping a Pretty Little Pretend Badge System, and has no real value at all now the challenge has been removed.

The rats may now keep their arses.

Multi-platform owner opinion:  I wouldn't say for sure it gives it an EDGE.  Since I play games for FUN and not to get points to show off.  It does make u wanna play the games a little bit more thoroughly, I would think.

I don't see why they grumble about it being mandatory on PS3. It already is on the XBox and you know they are just gonna port the same tasks over for the trophies. Doesn't really seem like that much of an extra bother to me.

Well put Nailer.

Look at PAIN, Mirror's Edge, and Resistance 2, and Warhawk trophies.  Anyone that can pull off the highest rank trophy there, I tip my hat to them, cuz DAMN that takes a LONG time.  Same with Resistance.  I'm only 500 kills toward the 10k kill gold trophy.

Nope, not at all.  The biggest thing to consider is that trophies are still lame!  and how you have to look at them individually and there is no way to just glance at someones profile and see how they stack up to you in overall games progress.  Also, lots of us already have had our xbox live gamertags for while, and if we have started building up points, we are not going to stop and go to trophies all of a sudden.  Jeff should know this very well, being a points addict, he is not going to stop his score increase just to get trophies instead.
This would make a difference if trophies had been there from day one, but sadly, 2009 is a tad too late to get into this game.  Netflix is however the shit.  I can't believe how great the service is considering the price.  Just hope to see streaming video support grow.  There are lots of movies missing from streaming.  I remember jeff said he saw Don't Be  Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.  BUt I can't stream it, why?

It would be good if they went back and made all the already released "First party" Games atleast tropy enabled.

I get my satisfaction of knowing that I achieved something when I play the games on 360 (MP games) and doesnt matter if the same game on Ps3 doesnt have it, hence would love for the PS3 exclusives atleast to have them.. something that might even make me replay the games!

Anyhow, its a great thing seeing that its compulsory now :D

Most 360s being red ringed and bricked by NXE? Most owners being who?  Not me.

My PS3 sits dusty and unused.  My 360 gets played constantly.

And, yes, Sony has different standards for what a trophy is than the general guidelines for achievements, so someone will have to put some thought into it.

I wouldn't say trophy support has been sketchy. Pretty much all the big releases this holiday season have had trophies... and the likes of Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV and Killzone 2 were already confirmed to support them.

Still - this is nice that Sony have FINALLY done this and I look forward to continuing my trophy hunting ways.

yes, sony is heading toward the right direction because lately i find myself spending more times with games like GTA 4 and LBP, playing through it to get the most trophies i can get out of it. BUT, one thing Sony should do to enhance the Trophy system is to give the player some kind of REWARD FEATURE on the PSN where you can redeem the number of trophies you have for DLC ( i.e, add-ons, some downloadable games, movies, etc). This would definetly give people more reasons to get involved in the Trophy hunt. As of right now, it feels like im only doing this for bragging rights and nothing else. Will the ps3 have an edge on the xbox because of Trophies? no, unless they DO WHAT I SUGGESTED ^^^

Rhombus, Achievement points mean nothing anyways.  Sony's planning on incorporating trophy levels into Home and other areas where you are rewarded for your trophy level.  That's MUCH more inclusive than XBL points.

Free online play is more of a PS3 draw for me, speaking as a proud XBL Silver.  Still biding my time before I own a PS3, but I've played it plenty.

Trophies would be more interesting if I could smelt them down and get free Store credits.  Considering there are still people that think Gamerscore == MS Points, I think an intangible reward is a reasonable trade for an intangible accomplishment.

Left behind would be a grayed out trophy or badge, proving you got it once but decided to sell.  Then it becomes another psychological metagame to decide which ones you are so proud of that you can't part with them.  Imagine if Seriously 2.0 was worth 2500 points in trade.  (Also imagine if cheating/glitching didn't ruin the whole system...)

For the sake of those that have been wanting this, it's a good thing.  For people like me that gain all the satisfaction they are looking for out of games by simply completing them, it's not a deal-breaker either way.

Even if Sony is just trying to catch up, who says that's a bad thing?

It's not going to give the PS3 a definite advantage to add a feature that's already been on another system for three years but it's still a nice addition for people who own a PS3. Plus, maybe some points addicts will go for the PS3 versions of multiplat games for trophies now.

This is Sony's version of the penis envy that usually comes from Microsoft. Nobody who has a 360 and likes these things is going to buy a PS3 version of a game for the trophies. That's sort of the whole point: to collect achievements, not to start over.

I have 41 and a bit thousand achievement points and when I heard about trophies i was pretty *shrug* whatever about them but I like many others sat  devoted to stardust for a week or so trying to get  as many trophies as i could but after that the month and a bit lull of no games with  trophies really hurt the trophy system.  So mandatory was definately the way to go. the biggest problem is that i have more of a "ill see what i can do" kind of attitude now towards them instead of my "oh my god i might just devote my life to getting 20 stupid points" I have for achievements.  For people with both consoles It would probably be a little too hard to devote to both systems but its definately a good idea for sony.... They should have really patched resistance 1, heavenly sword and ratchet (possibly lair) that is probably their biggest mistake with trophies so far

Trophies are cool but I will most likely still buy 360 versions of multi platform released games.   I enjoy the PS3, but  when it comes to achievements I think there is more of a show off factor on the 360. I guess I feel that the 360 just has a better way of uniting the people you play with and being able to see what they've been up to.  It's really just a personal preference though. As long as you have fun playing the actual game then it doesn't matter what system it's on.

don't care about trophies or acheivments, they're just little numbers on a computer database that indicates how much time of your life you waste playing games, i'm not here to hate on gaming or anything but i am infused with a distict hatred towards  achievment scores since i was beaten up for having a higher score than another guy at my school

I do think trophies are great. First of all, there is no more reason for multi-platform gamers to say (Oh but the game on the PS3 does not have achievements). I think now, it is an even playground, and unless the developers do a half-ass job with the quality of the game, choosing between which version to buy is a matter of preference. .

Also, for Resistance 2 for example, trophies are really extending the life of the game for me. And in some cases, if the trophies/achievements are thought out well, they can introduce you to a new way of thinking about how to play the game.

Its a step in the right direction, however its far too late. Microsoft established a solid set of consistent rules with the 360 from the get go. Achievements are set in stone, every game has them and has done since the start. Everyone understands achievements, a simple numerical score.

To be honest I couldn't care less about Trophies as far as I am concerned Sony have lost that battle. The system they have added is over complicated and cant be backdated to all the games I own.

I can look at my Gamerscore on the 360 at the press of a button or online and anyone can say oh you have 22,000 points I have 25,000. I look at the Trophies and I cant be bothered to see what amount of each trophy kind you have collected. Sony really, completely missed the ball on this one. Its about simplicity, instead of trying to capture the sense of leveling up that you have in World of Warcraft they should have understood what Microsoft did from the very start. They went for the sense of a cumulative "High Score" and tapped into an idea that has been around since the genesis of video games...
"I have more POINTS than you!"

Its a built in behavior throughout the human species to have a clearly defined sense of worth in a simple number, hence the obsession with the ratings systems even on this very site. Should we have half stars? quarter stars? what rank is this game in a clearly defined number?

We like numbers and we like to put things in numerical order and when we get an Achievement we are adding to our number and in some way our brain keys that directly into a feeling of self progression. Even the naming that Microsoft has used is perfect for making us feel a sense of  "Achievement" coupled with the iconic sound and a little note right in your line of sight, its an extremely clever little trick.

I'm really not Sony bashing or having a go at the PS3 in any way I think that PS3 is doing a very good job, I just don't think that Trophies are a worthwhile line for Sony to be walking down right now and there are far better things that they are doing and should focus on. The only way that Sony could make Trophies worthwhile is go back in time and invent Achievements before Microsoft did.

Microsoft really really nailed that one down right, by design or happy fluke thats just how it is.

The whole thing that puts me off about the trophy system is that it feels like it was tacked on, which it was. It just doesn't feel like it plays a big role in your profile like how the 360 ties in achievements with the whole xbox live thing. Making it a standard is definitely a step in the right direction, but I feel like it's too little too late for Sony.
