Source Claims Electronic Arts Possesses Early Next-Generation Xbox Development Kit [UPDATED]

Let's take a trip down memory lane, looking at what Microsoft's already said about the next Xbox.

UPDATE: While no surprise, EA has told Kotaku this allegation is "100 percent not true."

--

With Nintendo about to disclose details on Wii's successor at E3, the gauntlet has been thrown and we're looking at endless months of anonymous sources murmuring about what Sony and Microsoft are planning. Speculation's fun 'n all, but everyone and their anonymous mom seems to hear differently.

That said, Develop is a reliable publication and when it claims a source has informed them Electronic Arts possess an early next-generation Xbox development kit (I'm not about to call it Xbox 720, guys), there's reason to believe there's some truth there. That's just about all Develop has filed here, however.

“Quite often when new consoles come around they’re packaged into a PC shell, but actually what’s inside is an entirely new console,” said Develop's source, described as "senior, trusted, well-placed."

Microsoft has said very little about its plans for Xbox 360's successor, pointing to continued strong sales and the successful launch of Kinect as proof there's no reason for Microsoft to move on yet. Nintendo's decision to leave Wii behind, however, may have started putting pressure on everyone else.

I'm not ready to buy three new pieces of hardware for my living room, are you?
I'm not ready to buy three new pieces of hardware for my living room, are you?

== TEASER == Job listings from March (via Engadget) described a team at Microsoft working on "defining and delivering next generation console architectures," which is absolutely not surprising. Of course Microsoft is actively working on a machine to come after Xbox. Eventually, the six-year-old Xbox 360 will be retired.

"Our view is we will be selling Xbox 360 for a long time," said Microsoft president of entertainment & devices Robbie Bach in 2008, when asked about Microsoft's future plans. "We are always working on new technologies. We have people working on those. People ask me how many people I have working on the next generation. On the one hand, it’s everybody. On the other, it’s nobody. People are continuously working on new technology. We started thinking about the next generation before we shipped the Xbox 360. It doesn’t start with a date. It starts way upstream with silicon development. From that comes a series of data points. You start making early technology choices. It’s an evolving thing. Stuff doesn’t become concrete until you get inside a window of when you have to ship, more than 18 months or so out.”

If Microsoft's looking to ship in fall 2012, we'd be within that window. Nintendo has said its next console would arrive sometime in 2012 but has not specified a window--we may not even get that at E3, knowing Nintendo. Previous statements from Microsoft pointed towards an Xbox 360 successor at earliest in 2013.

"I think it's important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us. There is no need to launch a new console, because we're able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal," said senior director of Xbox product management David Hufford to The Guardian in January 2010, before Microsoft had ultimately billed Natal as Kinect. "The Xbox 360 was designed for a long life, and I don't even know if we're at the midpoint yet."

It's unclear how much Nintendo's next machine will relate to its previous phenomenon.
It's unclear how much Nintendo's next machine will relate to its previous phenomenon.

Sony's known for making similar "long life" proclamations about its hardware, declaring both PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 would be around for a decade. In a sense, Sony was correct about PS2. Even though much of the world had moved on to newer hardware, Sony continued to sell PS2 hardware at a decent clip, even releasing supportive software. WWE All-Stars was released on PS2 earlier this year and Electronic Arts will have a PS3 version of Madden NFL 12 when it releases in August.

"This generation is here for a long, long time," said Xbox UK boss Stephen McGill to Xbox 360 Achievements last fall. "I think there's still a lot of legs left with the Xbox 360, so we're years away from contemplating what comes next."

When McGill made that statement, however, Kinect was unproven and Nintendo hadn't announced a new console. Kinect was very much designed to extend the current machine's lifecycle by a few years.

The next moves from Sony and Microsoft may hinge more on the response to Nintendo's machine than anything else. If the market expects another phenomenon, how long can each company wait? It would not be a surprise to see Microsoft fleetingly reference a new console at E3, if only to get folks buzzing.

I hope it's in the works and coming for 2012.  There have been a lot of improvements in technology for cpu, gpu, bus speeds and memory that would make the console games a lot better.    We're still playing most of our games at 720p.  A new system that could do 1080p, 60fps with newest graphic tricks would be awesome.

I'm an early adopter of kinect but I'll chalk that up to the early adopter tax if I could get a super high res kinect and a console that could handle it.

It's not as apparent when console tech is holding back game development as when PC held a larger share of the market.  These days, most PC games try not to do anything they couldn't do on a console, instead of creating content that makes the shortcomings of the consoles obvious.  It's slowed down the adoption of new PC hardware, further retarding PC game progress, and thus made consoles look better-preserved than in the past.   I think we'll be blown away by what the next generation consoles are capable of when they arrive because so few attempts have been made to accomplish it beforehand.

Then again, maybe the diminishing marginal returns of improved graphics will kick in, or budget gamers will be considered to a greater degree, and prove me wrong.

E3 2012 I predict will be the reveal for the next gen 360. Nintendo's next console if rumors are to be believed could be chasing after the hardcore crowd as well as the casuals and if it's true that 2014 is the earliest the other 2 can release then Nintendo will have 2 years to themselves and that will certainly have an impact on sales for the other 2. So it's not surprising if there is a next gen development kit.

I'm not ready to buy three new pieces of hardware for my living room, are you?

I am. It's what led me to buy a kickass DX11 rig after last year's E3 and the disappointing lack of a new hardware generation announcement.

Will hold me over until consoles make a return to form. Since 'Project Cafe' is essentially just a 360 with some extra juice, I guess that'll happen even later than I thought.

Hoping for a system built around a SSD drive. Cartridge-style gaming. Sexy cartridges at retail and a nice 1TB SSD built into the system for downloadable gaming.

EA is denying it.

EA's director of corporate communications, Jeff Brown, told IGN that the story was "a total fabrication -- 100 percent not true."

I enjoyed the recap of the history of the rumors, but I really don't think it's worth reporting on rumors until they're confirmed, or at least until the number of them is becoming overwhelming and credible, like with the new Nintendo console. So, I know it's coming from a reputable publication and whatnot, but "a source" seems pretty thin to warrant a whole article.

You're doing great, though, Patrick, not criticizing you or GB. Everyone's talking about it, you gotta report it and you made it interesting. I just don't know why people even entertain these sort of rumors so quickly. Stupid Internet. =)

It'll still be years before it comes out, and as for Kinect, have you ever heard of backwards compatibility? Kinect is upgradeable and they're most likely going to use it for the next 360. Duh

This generation of games is starting to get stale.  There are definitely some good games out there, but there's just nothing mind-blowing lately.  That said, I'm not convinced 360 needs an update quite yet. The Wii, however, definitely needs a successor.

The main problem about putting off new hardware is developers need another year or two on top of that 2013 date just to grasp the hardware and put out great games.  I don't really wanna wait that long for next gen stuff.

I am all for new hardware because I will usually wait at least 1 year before I buy it.  At that point there is a nice price drop and lot of bugs have been ironed out, plus there is a backlog of games.

Comparing the way PC games are looking to today's consoles, and the fact that some 360 games come on multiple discs I see a lot of reasons for them to upgrade. Kind of bummed out it's not even on the horizon yet.

I think the statement that they are 'years away from contemplating what's next' is just about the most absurd thing I've ever heard from a pr flack. Really, at what point can we just say to ourselves that these guys are professional liars? But let's take him at his word and assume Microsoft is actually years away from even thinking about the next console. Doesn't that paint the company as kind of...stupid?

I would of liked to see some more specific dates for many of the quotes provided here.  Context is everything when writing this kind of piece.

I'll echo the sentiment that while the retrospective was cool, this article was essentially spurred on by an unconfirmed rumor that didn't amount to anything.  Is this actually news?

With the amount that technology has advanced since 2005, it would almost impossible for any good engineer to make a console that fails anymore. So I think we are safe regardless of what happens. "
What? Please elaborate, because I don't think that makes sense. Also fall 2012 sounds fine by me. "
I meant that technology gets better, and engineers get smarter and learn new things that will help the new console not fail or break "
It's actually quite the opposite, more complexity means higher possibility of failure and it's hard to keep up quality management with that speed.

I've had enough of this shitty gen. anyhow. I really hope this next one is on par with the PSX/N64 gen, but I'm sure it'll be a bunch of gimmicks to rip off the Wii or something stupid along those lines. I also really hope the graphics aren't to the point that games get even shorter than they already are. But nah, probably another gen of wii gimmicks and DLC.

sorry didn't mean to sound like an ass :P  i just think it's funny that just months ago we were all positive that MS and SONY are holding back on releasing new hardware until at least 2014 because they just released new motion hardware for their consoles, and now Nintendo make a move and poof, we're expecting new consoles in a year.

I still say it's 2014 before we see a Sony or Msoft console for sale.  Honestly I don't really care all that much.  PC gaming is where it's at for me now.  Steam finally made it painless and integrated a good cross-game chat.  That, and I'd like to check out all of those Mario and Metroid games I've skipped over the last 10 years.  Nintendo's timing is great.

Ow Patrick Klepek, it's really nice to have you here. Always perfectly sound reasoning, even within a completely vague rumour.

It'll be interesting to see how the other two will react on the (partial) unveiling of Nintendo's next console in june. No matter how you might put it, this first move will be a treath as well as a blessing to the other competitors. Exciting times.

Do we really need more consoles?  Technology is pretty advanced now for a while, except in the case of the Wii.   I suppose my money will go with whoever is offering full reverse compatibility (nintendo), but probably just stick with the PC.

The companies want to push current-gen consoles, so they're going to say that the current consoles have a ton of life left just for the sake of sales.

Therefore, you can't trust their word on anything about console life, unless they actually announce a new console.

@Wuddel: The PS3 isn't "a step beyond the 360". PS3 has great looking exclusives, that might/might not be possible on the 360. Most games look completely identical however.
