Source Engine Shooter "Bloody Good Time" Headed To Steam, XBLA

Like some other Source Engine games, it's a little on the goofy side.

Developer Outerlight, in collaboration with Ubisoft, has licensed Valve's Source Engine to create their own not-so-serious and cartoon-inspired shooter this Fall. Bloody Good Time, as it's being called, will be an online-focused competitive romp that appears to be attempting to capture the hearts and minds of "irreverent" FPS enthusiasts with its own breed of ridiculous melee and shooter action.

Built for up to eight players simultaneously, Bloody Good Time is being suggested to focus more on mayhem-causing weaponry than your typical range of guns. In the press materials, it's mentioned that players will be able to use items like frying pans and remote-controlled rats in addition to the normal arms like the one you see just below.

If you're wondering why the characters look like they do, it's because the game is riffing on B-Movie actors and sub-AAA movies. In fact, the entire game takes place on a Hollywood movie set with silly locations such as Vegas hotels and summer beach houses. The sets also come with actors who dress like, well, bunnies, clowns, and starving security guards.

Not much more is being announced about Bloody Good Time right now, but it seems possible that it will at least have some sort of campaign mode--the press materials mention specifically that the online portion is just an "option."

Want to see more of BGT? Look no further.

Damn, you're all writing this off so quickly. I'd much rather welcome a little bizarro game such as this over your traditional alien, zombie, or military shooter games that plagues gaming right now.

And why TF2 comparisons? because of cartoons? TF2 wasn't first cartoon game, everyone. It was only the first on the source engine.

Can they stop with this horrible cartoony style, it looks like crap. TF2 Looked like crap!

If they are going with a cartoony look, make it a smooth cellshading style instead of this disney-esque bullshit!

I don't think this sort of comic non-threatening style of game appeals to gamers. That is, I think the concept of making this occur with wacky whimsical characters in a series of television studio sets is a lot like making a FPS . . . . paintball game. Why would I play a game where I shoot paintballs, when I'm already playing in a virtual world that I can use and do anything?

Not saying it's a terrible idea. I just don't think the gaming community picks up on these type of games for that same sort of reason. Even virtual risk is more exciting than virtual nerf-soft-safety, I think.

@W0lfbl1tzers:  lol yeah exactly what I was thinking.

For me, well I know its a shooter on the source engine, so i will probly like it, the art style is a bit meh, kinda reminds me of postal 2 in the way its stupid, but postal 2 is awesome so maybe this will be as much fun to play.

I don't like the quality or type of games Ubisoft makes and believe me I got burned many times buying their stuff.  This game to me looks like their trying way too hard to garner gamer cred to make it look casual and cool at the same time.

I disagree that it won't appeal to gamers. because obviously people in this thread have said they might get it, thus appeal to a gamer.  You can't really write off a game you don't know anything about other than it's a cartoon fps.

Just because it's a cartoon doesn't make it akin to playing a paintball FPS.  Look in their hands. Those are shot guns, not guns shooting balls of paint...
It's not your typical military, zombie, alien shooter, so it must be awful. MIRITE?

After Monday Night Combat, XBLA and PSN need a few more long players in the vein of TF2 and CounterStrike - games that build up a loyal community based on solid mechanics (even if that means the graphics take a hit to keep up with the speed of the action or numbers playing at once).

The artsy and retro games have their place but both systems need alternatives to the usual triple-A multiplayer suspects. A cheap downloadable game, customisable and regularly supported by the developer should be what the service relies upon. Not just the usual FPS but you could see an RPG or MMO delivered in the same fashion.

Considering the success of Facebook games and free-to-play MMOs, why haven't the consoles taken this on board and chucked a few dollars at it?
