Spend Your Weekend Watching Other People Play Video Games

You know, why don't you do something totally different on this site for a change?

Lots of people, watching StarCraft.
Lots of people, watching StarCraft.

If you're the sort of person who's been looking to transition from "sort of casually interested in seeing highly skilled people play really difficult games for money" to "lying on your couch watching streamed matches of StarCraft II and/or Street Fighter IV for two days straight," this might well be the best weekend in the history of the world for you to take that momentous step.

I'm talking about the world of competitive gaming (or "e-sports," if you can stomach the term), and there's a staggering amount of it happening over the next two days.

For me the main event is MLG Anaheim (you know, California), where the folks at Major League Gaming are pulling together the best of the best to compete for cash and glory in live streams of Halo Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and--count 'em--two separate feeds of StarCraft II filled with dozens of top Western players and a handful of the biggest names from the Korean scene, and commentated by some of the best casters on the Internet, including noted fancy gentleman Sean "Day[9]" Plott. You can watch the low-quality streams of all this stuff for free at MLG's site, or, hey, how about in this player right here.

A few months ago, MLG ran a Dallas event so disastrous, rife as it was with unstable video streams and in-game networking issues, that the group's CEO personally took the stage on the last day to issue a formal apology. After that performance, I wouldn't have endorsed another one of their events. But at its next show in Columbus, MLG thoroughly got its act together by fixing its network issues, bringing in top players and commentators from the Global StarCraft League in Korea, offering free high-quality streams to everyone, and even getting rid of its peer-to-peer video service due to audience demand. Based on that follow-up performance, I have no reservation about recommending the MLG feeds if you want a good, free way to see what competitive StarCraft II is all about.

Of course, Halo and Call of Duty will be going on as well, if you're into that. I just can't get into competitive first-person shooters in the same way as I have StarCraft, though.

Another genre I can appreciate on a competitive level is the fighting game, and I'll be darned if EVO 2011 doesn't have you covered there. That's going on in Vegas all weekend, and there are two live feeds over on the official site streaming high-level games of SF4 Arcade Edition, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat, and more. Of course, if you want to get in on the seedy hotel-room cash games of Jackie Chan, you'll just have to make the trip to Vegas yourself.

Lastly, you could always skip straight to the gold standard of live competitive gaming events by watching the GSL's season finals, also going on this weekend. You can watch live streams of the finals for free if you feel like staying up till some ungodly hour on North American time; otherwise, a video-on-demand account will cost you a decent chunk of change. Those new to the game may want to stick with the more accessible MLG option for the moment, though I can tell you from experience that there's nothing quite like being in the middle of a couple thousand people screaming their heads off at an all-in zergling rush.

I have enjoyed some Halo 3 MLG in the past, never really caught much Reach but what i did see from the end of last season was shaping up nicely. might wait for my network provider to get its act together and catch it on demand later.

been watching EVO a lot, it's a little annoying to watch the important matches cause they happen at like 5am over here, but sunday I'm gonna stay and watch the entire thing until 6:30am :D. I can't watch any more starcraft I'm a little burned out on it. Maybe I'll watch a set or two if there are any good competitors I like.

I always look forward to MLG weekends. Lots of great Starcraft 2 matches to watch. I am glad that they have gotten most of the kinks out and are now one of the best produced tournaments. Also Day 9 is the best commentator ever!

Loved Kiwikaki just turning the tables on MooNan with some of the best Protoss play in the world.  Great stuff, taking down one of the first Koreans today for a foreigner.  Hopefully there can continue to be more back and forth matches like this that exemplify contentious play. That is just a delight to watch. :)

I really hope Wolfkrone wins, because he's the only guy not using an arcade stick.

You make it sound like using an arcade stick is giving you some advantage in some way.  It's not. Playing on a pad is just less comfortable but hey it works for some people, I personally can't play on pad as it hurts my thumb too much after extended periods of play.
I'm not saying he's at a disadvantage for playing on pad, just that it's not common for pad players to get this far at EVO.

Pretty much just watching MK, the fights have been the most interesting. Tekken was boring as hell and the guys at the were arseholes. No shaking hands, no GG or anything; just unplugged their controllers and walked away.

LOL Walshy in the box.

EDIT
Actually, Walshy's commentary is pretty good, his insight is obviously second to none due to his experience, but he explains stuff really well, and breaks down the strats and methodology that teams/individuals use.

Wow.  Korean dominance this year.  Good luck to Boxer in the Loser Finals(and in the Grand Finals once he wins!).

Quite a day of games, and the best is still yet to come.  We've got MvC3 Finals, Street Fighter IV AE Finals, and the upcoming Starcraft II Finals.  Winner of Boxer vs MMA will go to Korea's S-Class due to MVP already being S-Class.  It's gonna be quite a Final Round of gaming tonight.  Hope everyone will catch it! :)

Woah!  And MVP wins it all!  His partner just became the Korean champ and now MVP is the MLG champ!

What a weekend of high-level Starcraft II play.  I bet Brad it tweaking out after all of this SCII, especially that epic one hour match.

Then on the fighting game front, we've got the Street Fighter IV Finals coming up, and that amazing MvC3 Final Round.  Everyone freaking out at the madness going on there.  Justin Wong taken down by a Perfect!  Just shocking.

Quite a weekend.  Absolutely loved it.  Now just a little more.

Amen to that!  I was absolutely -shocked- to see Tron pull out a perfect play to take down Dark Phoenix and Haggar.  That match will be replayed for quite some time.  Love it, especially for taking down the menace Phoenix.

And Fuudo, the Japanese Harry Potter, pulls off the  Finale.

Latif looked simply exhausted but still put on a nail-biter.  In the last hour, he beat Tokido, Daigo, and Poongko.  Wow.  He put all his heart and soul in it, but he simply couldn't take down four titans in a row. Best EVO yet.

MLG was fantastic, and EVO was hyped as heck.

Yeah, that Poongko match was intense.  Too bad he was dominated the whole time by Fuudo.
