Spend Your Weekend Watching Other People Play Video Games

You know, why don't you do something totally different on this site for a change?

Lots of people, watching StarCraft.
Lots of people, watching StarCraft.

If you're the sort of person who's been looking to transition from "sort of casually interested in seeing highly skilled people play really difficult games for money" to "lying on your couch watching streamed matches of StarCraft II and/or Street Fighter IV for two days straight," this might well be the best weekend in the history of the world for you to take that momentous step.

I'm talking about the world of competitive gaming (or "e-sports," if you can stomach the term), and there's a staggering amount of it happening over the next two days.

For me the main event is MLG Anaheim (you know, California), where the folks at Major League Gaming are pulling together the best of the best to compete for cash and glory in live streams of Halo Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and--count 'em--two separate feeds of StarCraft II filled with dozens of top Western players and a handful of the biggest names from the Korean scene, and commentated by some of the best casters on the Internet, including noted fancy gentleman Sean "Day[9]" Plott. You can watch the low-quality streams of all this stuff for free at MLG's site, or, hey, how about in this player right here.

A few months ago, MLG ran a Dallas event so disastrous, rife as it was with unstable video streams and in-game networking issues, that the group's CEO personally took the stage on the last day to issue a formal apology. After that performance, I wouldn't have endorsed another one of their events. But at its next show in Columbus, MLG thoroughly got its act together by fixing its network issues, bringing in top players and commentators from the Global StarCraft League in Korea, offering free high-quality streams to everyone, and even getting rid of its peer-to-peer video service due to audience demand. Based on that follow-up performance, I have no reservation about recommending the MLG feeds if you want a good, free way to see what competitive StarCraft II is all about.

Of course, Halo and Call of Duty will be going on as well, if you're into that. I just can't get into competitive first-person shooters in the same way as I have StarCraft, though.

Another genre I can appreciate on a competitive level is the fighting game, and I'll be darned if EVO 2011 doesn't have you covered there. That's going on in Vegas all weekend, and there are two live feeds over on the official site streaming high-level games of SF4 Arcade Edition, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat, and more. Of course, if you want to get in on the seedy hotel-room cash games of Jackie Chan, you'll just have to make the trip to Vegas yourself.

Lastly, you could always skip straight to the gold standard of live competitive gaming events by watching the GSL's season finals, also going on this weekend. You can watch live streams of the finals for free if you feel like staying up till some ungodly hour on North American time; otherwise, a video-on-demand account will cost you a decent chunk of change. Those new to the game may want to stick with the more accessible MLG option for the moment, though I can tell you from experience that there's nothing quite like being in the middle of a couple thousand people screaming their heads off at an all-in zergling rush.

Another exciting GSL Final despite the overwhelming force of NesTea.  Not really sure who can conquer him, but someone will.  True creativity and surprising innovation may be the only chance for any player against such flawless StarCraft II play.

Now to MLG!  Tonight's games were great, and I anticipate tomorrow's matches should be quite a show.  Everyone should make sure to check them out and enjoy some top-level Starcraft II play that is perhaps a little more competitive than the GSL. ;)

No thanks. I'll try to enjoy the rest of what we have of Summer. Gona go watch like a zillion bands play here in Montreal. I'll take that over being inside with nerds, and skanks at Adultcon.

I can't wait to come home from work and 4-box it using the 2 monitors on my computer, my laptop, and my iPad. I may not sleep all weekend.

Also AE has been fucking AMAZING so far. Last year I was super bored of SSFIV but the level of play this year is insane. The brackets were so fucking stacked and once they reached top 32 every match was a down-to-the-wire knuckle-biting white-fisted edge-of-your-seat brawl. And today is MvC3 ALL DAY. Why can't every weekend be EVO!?

Also lol at Boxer going 3-0 in pool play so far, what the fuck? I need to watch those matches.

This is the first time I've really watched an Evo championship and damn; Street Fighter beats any sports I can think of hands down. At 8 in the morning I stood up at my computer and was just fist pumping when Wolfkrone eliminated Mago, shortly after damn near having a heart attack from anxiety as their match got closer to the end.

I wouldn't be so interested in watching other games (sans MvC3 if that gets crazy). I don't see the appeal of FPSs as much personally. I like playing them but watching them does nothing for me.

Still never played Starcraft; I should probably play Starcraft now I've got a decent PC.

Awesome to see some GB promotion for those events. MLG has been pretty great so far, even though it runs at the worst time imaginable for Europeans (2 am until 10 am). I watched the re-broadcast, which is a very nice feature to have.

;_; I would've settled for just Jeff and Brad but hey I guess Whiskey didn't wanna pay them for the weekend and/or they didn't wanna do it for free. Still would've made for a damn fine feature imho.

I watched the EVO streams all day yesterday, but I had no idea MLG was happening. They're making me choose between fighting games and Starcraft? Why? Why are they making me do this?!

I still watch Day[9] from time to time but man there is TOO much starcraft 2 everywhere now. With WoW being this Juggernaut that took over how people view MMOs and now how Starcraft 2 has over saturated every streaming site, youtube and competition. I'm going to hate to see what Diablo 3 is going to do to people.

@Arkanti:

I've never really watched much of Starcraft 2 online before, but it looks like something I could get into. I don't really have a stable enough Internet connection to get into it myself (maybe Starcraft 3?), but I'm hoping to get into it casually at some point. And watching these super-sharp players do their magic is just kind of incredible.

Btw, check out the MLG Thread on the Starcraft 2 forum.  We're a friendly bunch!

Just like sports, all the fun is sucked out at the high levels of play. So I'll just keep playing my games at home and keep my rounds of baseball at the local diamond.

Summer vacations are the best. I've got nothing better going on so I might as well.

I am not going to lie, I love watching this every year! This is kind of like back in the day when people used to commentate just in the background for fighting games at the arcade. My friend Dan is still pretty good at this (like he can keep up with the action and even throws funny quips in there as well).

There are quite a few on pad now, like Vangief in SSF4 or Fanatiq in Marvel. It's not really considered a disadvantage anymore.

You make it sound like using an arcade stick is giving you some advantage in some way.

It's not. Playing on a pad is just less comfortable but hey it works for some people, I personally can't play on pad as it hurts my thumb too much after extended periods of play.

Thank you Brad. I always enjoy coming across some SC2(by accident at least) and the other feed is pretty cool also. My non-gamer brother came over some few month ago, and I had happened to be playing the big tourney feed from Korea. It was really the first time I seen that kind of competitive play myself, but he was impressed surprisingly . said brother had heard of the phenomenon on the internet but never really knew much contextually about it.
