Square Enix Extending Final Fantasy XIV's Free Trial Period

Looks like groaning on the Internet might actually get you somewhere!

News flash: Final Fantasy XIV hasn't fared well on the reviews circuit, and users have been rather vocal about its bugs and various other issues. Bonus news flash: Square Enix is well aware that the game has problems, and due to the backlash, it is extending the MMO's free trial period to 60 days from its original 30.

This is all according the official FFXIV blog. In a statement, Square Enix said, "we have received a wealth of constructive feedback" and the teams responsible for the game "would like to take this opportunity to express their sincerest gratitude." But "considering the nature of much of the feedback we received, however, and the current state of the game, we have decided to extend the free trial period for all users."

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==The MMO launched on September 30, meaning the original 30 days is almost at a close. That cut date looms even closer for collector's edition owners who were able to log into the game a week before service began. There's a few catches with this extension, though. First, it only applies to people who have carried out character purchases before October 25. Second, if you've been banned, you will not be eligible for this, you dirty little boy, you.

Of course, there's an incentive for sticking around and playing for the extra 30 days if you so desire. In the post, Square Enix says fixes are coming. The latest "Message from the Director" column dishes out some details for a future patch and today's "Version Update" is addressing some issues. Here's the patch/fix tease in the post, by the way. The team is apparently listening to you, which is pretty swell of them, so I'd thought I would include this.

We would like to assure players that the world of Final Fantasy XIV is constantly growing and evolving, and the voices of the community are essential to that process. The development and management teams are carefully considering all player feedback, and working diligently to implement whatever changes and additions will serve to make Eorzea a better home for adventurers. We humbly ask for your continued support to this end.

If you've already taken the plunge with FFXIV, will you stay the course? Or were you too worried about the product to check it out in the first place?

This game is still in beta stages, should not have been released.

Everyone should get unlimited months until the game is playable.

To me the whole game just dosen't have enough personality for a commitment. Even if they patch the games MANY problems it still wont be worth it. ( I say 18 months if we are taking bets)

This is all pretty rough... but if they keep it free to play (minus cost of disc purchase) as long as this is in a pseudo beta state, then party on.  When the fixes aren't there, and are still in "next months" update, and they decide to turn on payments... then um... yeah...

I tried to play the open beta, couldn't even get the client to load in a reasonable time-frame.  Sorry but there are too many barriers to entry for this game IMO.  It's such a shame, really would like to see an actual playable complete, engaging FF MMO.  Maybe someday.

I realize I'm completely out of my mind, but I'm actually enjoying this game. They took portions of FFXI and added a shit-ton of crafting, a solo-friendly attitude, neato class system and created... an archaic mess. But, it's different, and I dig it.

If you want to play an MMO just cave in and play WoW. It's the only choice.

Ended up canceling it and re-installing FFXI.  Maybe it'll be better by the time the PS3 version comes out.

This is rather sudden of SE. Anyone who has played a great deal of FFXI as I have knows that SE utterly ignores gamer feedback, and basically issues a big old "Fuck you" to people dishing out a sizable monthly fee for their services. I don't often say this, but I hope they fail miserably with this one.

I played the heck out of FFXI, and never again will I be tricked by Square.  Tried the 14 beta, and quickly realized I'd be paying for another beta for the next year.

The game looked awful every time I saw it, the amount of optimization issues that were being experienced less than a month from launch shot up about 775 million red flags, I wouldn't touch this game with a ten foot pole.

I played the beta and the game was very broken.  It was weeks away from release and they still have Japanese text in there.  Also some other things seemed strange, like when you die from poison it says " You defeat You".  This game should have been delayed heavily.

As for PS3 owners looking for an MMO, DCU online is actually looking pretty good so Square is really fucked.

Square? Being proactive to customer feedback?!

Hey, is the new patch going to be bundled with a re-release of a game that we are going to have to pay? Perhaps we can see improvements of said patch via, a trailer inside a closed theater?

Well at least they've acknowledged out-loud they have a problem. That's the first step to recovery.

I played the beta of the game for awhile... here are my thoughts.

Pro's: The game seriously looks great and ran smooth on my setup. At points the graphics were on par with FFXIII, which is impressive for a MMO.

Job/Class system is very customizable. (Also a con for this series)

Con's: Laggy as hell (probably not anymore since the servers are only populated by the 10 people who actually shelled out for the game)

High system requirements. Most MMO players do not have high powered PC's. That is part of the reason WOW is so successful.

The interface is horrid and insanely unintuitive. Just doing simple things are a chore. The map and quest logs suck too. Also no auction house.
Asheron's Call, an ancient MMO I used to play well over 10 years ago had a better interface than this mess.

Ditches the old school job/class system. No more are the days of Black mages, White mages, Warriors Monk's, and so on. Everyone is sort of a Red mage in this game.

The game is chock full of unfinished area's that still need to be patched in.

it goes on and on...

Hopefully it will be an epic fail so SE will stop wasting so much time on MMO's obviously they cant compete with Blizzard and its sad, i want to see more regular final fantasies, more often, i hate this long period between them. They are just being greedy and trying to create games that make more cash instead of focusing on creating great games... and the only way they can do that is by making more story oriented games, not social experiences.

The only MMO to release in an almost perfect state (sure all games have bugs n stuff) was WoW, and look what that did to their rep.

Gotta learn, gamers don't wanna pile money into something thats not finished or not fun, the competition is too strong.
Roll on starwars?
I'm sure Bioware will actually finish the game as they probably have a long term plan of not ripping people off.

The reason for the extension is because they know it's still in beta.  It's so bad, they should not be charging people money for this product.

among other things.

This game came out many many months too early.  I bought the collector's edition, and I didn't last long.  It's a broken, broken mess.  The awful UI alone is enough of a reason to be frustrated.

I didn't pay $70 to be a tester for a buggy game, I paid $70 for a finished product.  Normally I don't resort to profanity in posts... but fuck you, Square Enix.

@liquidsol: You know what's worse?
I was in the first wave of alpha invites back in June.

Everything I've heard people complaining about are the EXACT same things we were telling them to fix back when it was still in development.

TRUE STORY: The servers were so broken that the alpha testers were forced to share a torrent of the install files with each other. If you didn't see the post on the hidden forum then you were pretty much locked out from any alpha access. Stay classy, Square Enix.

@lucas_kelly: You fail at trolling. The game actually had a lot of interest at first, however over time it became obvious that Square Enix was just going back to their bad habits and rehashing failed concepts from FFXI.

However I wouldn't say no one wanted to play it. It was a pretty big deal to the genre.
Now all we have left is Old Republic.

The class system intrigues me, but everything else I've seen in previews and reviews seems way to clunky to bother with. Now if you don't mind, my friend has sent me a Scroll of Resurrection for WoW, so I'm off to get my electronic opium fix.
