Star Wars: The Old Republic Will Actually Ship This Year

SWTOR scoots in just under the wire with a late December release date.

The three founders of BioWare: Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Dr. Ray Muzyka, and Dr. Anakin Skywalker
The three founders of BioWare: Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Dr. Ray Muzyka, and Dr. Anakin Skywalker

Electronic Arts has issued a press release confirming a late December release for BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game will become widely available on December 20 in North America (five days after the shutdown of Star Wars: Galaxies), with the European release trailing a bit on December 22. Previously, word from EA was that the company was hoping to get the game on shelves this year, but that it would definitely be out before the end of March.

The company also took the time to reiterate the game's pricing structure, which follows the classic formula of $14.99/month with discounts for paying in advance for three- or six-month chunks. Pre-ordering players will also get "Early Game Access." That seems like a weird thing for them to capitalize like that, but the main point is that there don't appear to be any details just yet about when that access begins. Over on the game's official boards, where people are wondering the same thing, the response from Senior Community Coordinator Allison Berryman is as follows:

"We don’t have any new information regarding Early Game Access to share at this time. We know everyone is very excited about the release date announcement (we are, too!) and that you can’t wait to get in the game! The beginning of Early Game Access will depend on a number of factors, including results from our Game Testing Program and Pre-Orders, but there will be multiple days of access."

A quick scan of those message boards also makes it look like there are still plenty of people clamoring to get into the game's beta testing program, with more news about another wave of invites--which are likely to include European players--coming in what I imagine will have to be the relatively near future.

As for us, I'd like to do a series of regular videos that involve us playing the game for a somewhat extended period of time, sort of like we did for Star Trek Online. We'll have to see how that goes, because a December 20 release date puts it pretty close to our crazy Game of the Year process as well as, you know, Christmas and stuff.

Or you can wait 6 months after release for the free to play version, since yet another mmo thinks they can charge money and people ofcourse will not pay.

Just because you and your vocal douchbaggery-kind are too cheap/stupid to pay for content on a subscription basis instead of a microtransaction based doesnt mean that there arent MILLIONS of people who are willing to do so.

So just because Me and millions more dont like montly subscriptions we are stupid? wow i think it's time for you to go flip some more burgers.

Fuck all these haters. Seeing the Giantbomb crew playing The Old Republic will be great entertainment!!

actually, I don't understand MMO why I have to pay even more after buying. subscription? my ass. once you paid for it, you don't need to pay more if it is not DLC. that's why I never play this kind of bullshit including WOW, possibly Diablo 3 or whatever. what a stupid people are! they don't even realize that they pay even more and more. one time you buy. that's all. don't want to waste my damn money for nothing.

You pay for MMOs because they are constantly adding content and you hog up bandwidth resources on their servers. MMOs are a persistent world with thousands of players, and that requires a lot of upkeep. At least that's the argument that's always used.

I'm not sure how true it is.

Haha the Star Wars license has become the symbol of mediocre since the prequels.

This is certainly true unfortunately, with a few minor exceptions.

I am a hardcore Star Wars fan, but even I realize that George Lucas does not care about the "universe" he created as much as we do, which is understandable and happens all the time. I'm sure he did at one time, but with the passage of said time, these things simply become more of a business property and less a creative property or labor of love. He has done what he set out to do, and is enjoying the success, I get that.

I would believe that if he had stopped adding in stupid new things to the movies. I really believe the man is just out of touch, Darth Vader NOOOOOOOOOO anyone?

I don't think that's what the market wants, at all. Why do you think this, if I may ask?

WoW is basically delivering exactly that in every expansion. I don't think that dipping WoW in a space theme will do much in terms of gathering interest from people who are already invested in a game like that.

I'm sure it'll be very successful on day one, but I can already hear the servers merging in the distance.

I concur. I'm not even interested in playing this game (all I want is a KOTOR III, goddammit) but I would definitely want to see that.

I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but after that raid video a few weeks/months ago, I can't see any reason to play this game. But hey, if people are willing to waste their money on it then I say more power to them.

When I first saw the date I just laughed. There's just so much wrong about it :P I hate to speculate too much, but whatever reasons they had for picking that date there's bound to be some crazy marketing strategy behind it. Are they trying to force people into pre-ordering instead of buying it ? What kind of effect are they hoping the holidays will have on their launch ? There's something really strange going on here.

EA has stated they need 500k subs to do good enough, Rift was Trions first game, and it sold around 1.2 million and has a very solid playerbase and is growing. A bioware starwars game with the knights of the old republic name will do just fine..most of the MMO playerbase wants MMOs that play similarly to WoW.

I like others will wait for the F2P, the game isn't going to be as big as a lot of people are hoping, with guild wars 2 and diablo 3 coming plus WOW still being the gigantic monster it is SW cannot compete with a subscription, they may milk a year out of it but it won't last, it can't last. This isn't 99-04, mmo's aren't as big as they used to be and WOW was and is the last mmo to ever be on that level.

F2P is going to be the new way of MMOs, sure they will release the mmos with a $10-15 subscription but by year 2 they will all go F2P because with the competition out there, the "free" mmos they can't compete.

And to people saying WOW is passed it's peak, get real, they still have over 11 million subscribers, something this game will never have after year 1 with a subscription.

I play a lot of WoW and really enjoy it, but I also love Star Wars, especially KotOR. I've already got the Collector's Edition pre-ordered, butI don't see myself unsubbing from WoW any time soon.

I'm willing to commit some time into SWTOR for sure ...if it turns out to be alright.

I had a feelin' that it would make it this year. Still, while I am eager to see it, I probably won't get it until March or so of 2012. If it's still going strong then, I'll check it out.

On a separate note, I am a little disappointed in the fanboyism that appears to be on the rise from Guild Wars 2 proponents. I don't think there is much reason to ridicule this game and call it a failure before it hits store shelves. I'd like to see both games (plus others) succeed.

I still don't know about this game if it wasn't an MMO I would definitely buy it but since it is one I'm going to wait till giant bomb does some coverage and a review on it to see if its worth me sinking a lot of time into it. The only MMO I've played was City of Villains and I played the shit out of it I did play WOW for a week and got bored hopefully this game is worth it because there are a lot of games coming out late in the year that I'm interested in.

I really enjoyed my time with SWTOR. It's a great game. Totally looking forward to getting back into that universe and playing more of the story. There is so much content it's crazy. It's definitely a familiar feeling MMO but there is much more emphasis on story which keeps me coming back.

You get story scenes in this game all the time where in other MMOs you'd have to play like a 100 hours to just get a little bit. And that little bit would be a wall of text. I don't hate reading but it takes me out of the game.

I find, SWTOR really does feel like a Knights of the Old Republic game too. I can understand why fans would be put off by it being a MMO but I think it really is a true sequel. Except the controls feel quite a bit better. You see the Star Wars universe through a bunch of different perspectives and they all have entertaining stories. So pumped for early access. The full voice over is great and the Star Wars universe certainly doesn't hurt.

Also, getting your own ship awwwesome. Being able to fly to any planet you want or get into giant starship battles is pretty awesome. Having companions who have a voice and talk about the environment you're in or voice their opinion during a conversation is awesome. There is also lots of other awesome stuff but I'm too lazy to type it. Man, I just really like this game. Can't wait.

I was on an early beta test, and to be honest my excitement fizzled out there. There is nothing innovative about this game, it's essentially Wow with a star wars theme. It's not a bad game, not in the least, but it's not what I was hoping for.
