News spread today about a new Riddick game, thanks to some offhand comments by actor Vin Diesel to Screen Crush.
“My diehard gamers want Tigon to deliver the third chapter in the Riddick game[s],” said Diesel, “and we just over the past couple of months, just this year, [we] reassembled that team from Starbreeze that brought Escape from Butcher Bay to create the third game.”
Diesel did not elaborate, but I can confirm Starbreeze is not making this new Riddick game. The current iteration of Starbreeze, high off the release of the emotionally charged Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, told me it’s not involved.
This makes sense, as many of the ex-Riddick developers left Starbreeze to form MachineGames, which is currently working on Wolfenstein: The New Order for id Software. Given that MachineGames is wholly owned by id Software’s parent company, ZeniMax, it seems unlikely MachineGames is creating this third Riddick game. Who, then, is developing the next Riddick?
Diesel started his own game company, Tigon Studios, back in 2002. It was responsible for collaborating to create the acclaimed Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay with Starbreeze, the less acclaimed Wheelman, and a disappointing Riddick follow-up, Assault on Dark Athena. Tigon Studios tried to get many games off the ground but none materialized, and the company has been radio silent the last several years.
My attempts to contact Tigon Studios went awry. The company’s website, which hasn’t been updated in years, lists only a contact email address that resulted in my inquiry bouncing back.
