Stop Hitting Yourself!

If your big brother could use the Force.

I'd be happy to never even touch a lightsaber in this game.
I'd be happy to never even touch a lightsaber in this game.
Maybe it was the general exhaustion inherent to the last day of E3, maybe it was my ever-increasing disinterest in Star Wars, or maybe it was a bitter cocktail of the two, but the last time I saw The Force Unleashed, I just thought it looked dumb. Having downloaded the demo this morning, I'm happy to report that The Force Unleashed looks dumb--dumb as hell--but in a really giddy, appealing way.

My concern early on with The Force Unleashed was that it would just be a pile of licensed middleware engines loosely tethered together by storm troopers and TIE fighters. While it would appear that my fears weren't unfounded, it turns out that's maybe not an entirely bad thing. Using the Force to grab storm troopers and slam them into each other or fling them into TIE fighters is consistently hilarious enough that I'm willing to forgive the otherwise thin gameplay and ignore the annoying conceit of playing as a ridiculously overpowered secret apprentice to Darth Vader who, unless you count his synergistic appearance in Soulcalibur IV, no one has heard of before.

Part of the reason The Force Unleashed works is that the basic mechanics work well, but the specifics aren't quite right. Using the Force to manipulate objects is pretty smooth, and the dual-stick controls are set up in a familiar, first-person shooter fashion that makes the three dimensions intuitive to navigate, but the way the dudes flip about and try vainly to grab onto objects or other dudes just looks silly. Inappropriate sound effects and some confused AI behavior really enhance the effect.

I really enjoy that the game encourages you to basically play like an asshole, using the Force primarily to humiliate your opponents, with their eventual deaths seeming almost more like a side-effect. It's like the ultimate game of “stop hitting yourself!” Here's a brief montage to give you an idea of how I like to play The Force Unleashed.

I too was excited about a next-gen Psi-Ops with a Star Wars make over. And if that's what you're waiting for with SWTFU, feel free to keep waiting. Yes, you can use force powers to fling Storm Troopers and various objects around. But you can't move AND throw stuff around like you could in Psi-Ops. In PO, you used the right shoulder button to control the height of objects and the right thumb stick to move it around the horizontal plane, while the left thumb stick was used for movement. In SWTFU, you use the right shoulder to force grab stuff, but then you use the left thumbstick to move stuff in and out, left and right, and the right thumb stick to move it up, down, and left/right. That also means no mobile cover, a feature I loved in Psi-Ops. Also the much touted DMM seems to be a lot of noise about nothing. It's kind of like DX10, nice to have but mostly meaningless where it counts, i.e. making the GAMEPLAY better or somehow unique. And their use of Euphoria seems pretty weak as well. After playing GTAIV and seeing and FEELING how Euphoria made a difference I was pretty stoked for how it would be utilised in SWTFU, but after the demo I'm hard pressed to tell you what it does other than make people stick onto anything close by. I think we are starting to see why Lucasarts is outsourcing their games, and that makes me sad.

Shallow combat or not, I was having tons of fun. Ryan must be gentle or something, because my troopers never grab on to stuff. :(

The demo isn't that bad...the AI is pretty weak - but I had fun throwing stuff around.

Something that really bugged me in the demo was the fact that I had to constantly look at things that I wanted to throw.   I realize why it had to be done this way, but it's unbelieveably unrealistic.  I'm a man seeped in the force, but it doesn't feel like I'm really at one with all my surroundings at all.

Take, for example, Empire Strikes Back .. you remember that movie, right?   In the cloud city battle with Luke, Vader just stands there looking at Luke and chucking things at him.  And there was a feeling that Vader wasn't limited to one item at a time.  But the controls in TFU are so muddy that it feels like a chore to get an object, line it up the way you want to and then launch it at something.

And I don't understand why you even bother giving me a force meter.  I mean, why make me wait even a few moments for it to recharge?  It slows the action down and takes you out of kick ass mode.   In the end this game just degrades into a run of the mill 3rd person action game.  And while I don't agree with Ryan on everything, I do agree that the "magic" of Star Wars is really starting to wear off.  I'm Star Wars'ed out .. and if you told me growing up that that day would EVER come ... I would have laughted at your face while wearing my Chewie Rocks! tee shirt.

What happened to this great franchise?  For the love of god .. stop basing content on anything that happened within .. let's say 50 years of Star Wars a New Hope.  KOTOR was good in the sense that it drew from a time period we weren't emotionally attached to.  I think that was a big key to that series' success.  I mean, was I the only person who thought Episodes I thru III sucked major ass?

Bah, writing this has just made me even more frustrated with Star Wars.  I need to go kill an Ewok ...

hahaha, the music made that a win. very funny! and i agree completely with you. when all they did was market the technology behind the game, i knew they really didnt give a shit about the gameplay itself, nor the story.
