Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition Announced

Ono busts out a surprise reveal at Comic-Con.

If Street Fighter X Tekken isn't your cup of hadoken, perhaps the other game Capcom announced over the weekend is. At its panel during San Diego Comic-Con, series producer Yoshinori Ono revealed Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition, a downloadable version of the 1999 Dreamcast fighter.

Few details have been released about this resuscitation. At the panel, Ono said that the team is "going to take [its] time to bring [it] out," and we shouldn't expect it in the "immediate future." Ono didn't bother with even the smallest of specifics like the game's media-type or if it's a creation along the lines of Street Fighter II HD Remix

No Caption Provided

Eurogamer discovered that it was a "downloadable title" this morning, but the gigantic mystery--what the "Online" part of the name really means--is still unanswered. Could it possibly allude to network support? Online fighting? Is that even possible? Oh wait. Yes, of course it's possible. Uh... let's just call that "mystery solved" and move forward, cool?

The current talk is that work on Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition is just getting underway. Ono seemed to allude to this during the panel prefacing his release expectation comments with, "Now that I have announced it, the company can't stop us." No, sir, I bet they can't.

I think "Online Edition" just means you'll be able to play it online and not some deeper meaning.

I have never actually played Street Fighter 3, so I am pretty interested in this. Also, its kinda crazy how many fighting games Capcom is pumping out right now, or even how many fighting games are coming out/being worked on by anyone.

I hope they don't change the art, like HD REMIX. Think HDR was a great game, but the art wasn't that great.

I only recently got into street fighter, bought SF3 for xbox after playing SSF4 and i like it a little more than 4.
The only downside, widescreen stretches to fit instead of being true widescreen, the emulation on the 360 lags very very rarely but it happens and the graphics are very blocky, it would look much better on an sdtv i'm sure its a display thing.

So have true widescreen and higher resolution and i'm sold, as long as it has an arcade mode, if it's online only i'm not sold, i'm not a competitive person.

And, as a dazed Ryu shouted these words as he pointed his hands at M. Bison, able to finish him off for good, he realized the direness of his situation: the trauma from the blows to the head he suffered had left him with brain damage, and he could no longer remember his famous technique.

Worriedly, he ran up to the stunned Bison and crouched below him. "Shorkeyun!" he shouted as he jumped in the air and promptly fell down, leaving Bison untouched. Recollecting his senses, Bison walked over to the confused fighter.

"Well, Mr. Street Fighter. I believe you're down for the count," Bison chuckled as he raised his heel over the helpless fighter's temple.

Fighting games without fighting other people would be like Diablo without loot or Mario without jumping.

As someone who only got into fighting games recently I'm a bit confused. I could be wrong, but wasn't Street Fighter 3 sort of the black sheep of the series? I have a retro games store near my house, maybe I'll see if I can pick up the Dreamcast version to see what this is all about.

The Dreamcast version isn't a great port.

Black sheep? 3rd Strike considered by many to be the finest 2D fighting game ever made. Its still played in tournaments to this day. The reason it's obscure is because it only received a few ports (because the CPS3 was very advanced for its time) and it didn't have many SFII characters. It was still great, but more for the hardcore players.

Because when it first came out MvC2 had some major bugs...also unless you are playing MvC2 at a high level it's actually pretty boring.

Yes! It's one of the most fun fighting games ever made for sure!

Hopefully they also give us some better features from the other console versions. Like a better training mode, being able to select the bonus games from the main menu, and possibly include the other SFIII games with it.

I'd love to see a good rebalance, to the least just buffing the low tier characters like Sean and Twelve. It's funny, because Sean was top tier in the 2nd SFIII.

So wrong. People use Chun-Li, Yun, Yang, Ken, Makoto, Urien, Dudley, Akuma, Ryu, Hugo, Q, Necro, Alex, Ibuki(an Ibuki placed top 8 in EVO '09), and even Elena. Watching EVO finals of 3S really isn't the best way to see what the game has to offer. People on GGPO and the Japanese have a much better variety of characters.

This is great news.  I liked SF3 much more than any incarnation of SF2.  I already have SF3 on PS2 but would gladly pay for it again on PS3 with online support.

Yeah but when you are talking about video games,  i would say not being popular to the general public would make it a black sheep, considering how popular every incarnation of SF2 was. I mean there are bands that fill up festivals with upwards of 50 thousand people and are stlll considered "cult" bands.  It dosent matter the quality of the game, the lack of public consumption is what makes it a "black sheep".

With that being said, eh i dont really care about this, i dont know if i would even consider buying it,  I never played much 3rd strike, and i already have enough games catagorized as  "PUNCH DUDES IN THE FACE: The Video Game".
