Super Smash Bros. Coming Out This Year

3DS owners can pick up a copy in summer, while Wii U players have to wait until the winter. Oh! New characters were announced, too.

Nintendo hosted a Super Smash Bros.-exclusive edition of Nintendo Direct yesterday. While the company didn't deliver an exact release date for the highly anticipated fighting sequel, we got pretty close. Super Smash Bros. arrives this summer on 3DS and this winter on Wii U. (The company has its priorities.)

No Caption Provided

There were plenty of new details revealed last night, as well.

Greninja, also known as the final evolution of Froakie from Pokemon X and Y, is one of the brand-new fighters. Sheik, Zero Suit Samus, Yoshi, and Charizard are all back, as well.

The 3DS version of the game will run "most" gameplay elements at 60 frames-per-second, a rather impressive feat for the handheld. 3DS players will also have exclusive access to the Smash Run mode, in which players enter into a dungeon, collect as many power-ups as possible, and then fight each other in an arena.

Both versions will have online play, and most stages in both versions will have "Final Destination" modes that simplify the layout. Nintendo claims the two versions will talk to one another, but it has not revealed exactly how.

The entire Nintendo Direct, which has far more details on the game, can be watched here:

Ah yes final destination mode where everyone who uses it is automatically flagged as an asshole. Seriously why is the community for these games so damn toxic.

Why are you so opposed to giving people more options? Don't like that mode, don't play it.

How are these two situations even remotely comparable? This wasn't a reveal announcement. And yes, plenty of people care about Smash Brothers. Pretty silly to post a comment like that, considering that almost everyone commenting on the article would have to care about it to some degree.

Poor choice for them to release this on the 3DS first in terms of sales. If they released it the other way around, it may have been an incentive for some people to go out and buy a Wii U.

How is exactly is that? The 3DS version will likely act as a "demo" and raise awareness of the franchise among the Internet jaded and Nintendo newcomers alike after the mixed Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

The full game will not really act as a demo, considering the only real differences between version is supposedly visual fidelity. I say it's a bad move because a ton of people already own the 3DS, who will probably have zero interest in picking up a Wii U if they already own the game on a device they own. Unless the 3DS version is garbage, it will probably satiate a vast number of peoples desires for a new SSB. But if it released the other way around, it could have been a great way to incentivize people to buy a Wii U and play it there first.

One thing to keep in mind is that SSB is a pretty popular 'couch multiplayer' game. Unless you're part of a group where every one of your friends has a 3DS and a copy of Smash, you're still going to wish you had the WiiU version. Heck, you might want it anyway, because sharing the same screen is way more fun than everyone being separated across the room.

Keeping the 'couch multiplayer' point in mind, I'd actually argue that the 3DS version will largely only appeal to the hardcore gotta-play-it-now Smash fan (who may well buy both). For everyone else who remembers the fond days of playing Melee with their friends, I'd think they would scoff at the notion of playing it on a handheld.

When I stated that the 3DS version acts as a demo I am definitely speaking more to the fact that Smash Bros. has historically been a local multiplayer game. The 3DS will serve as a cash cow for Nintendo and a testing ground for balance changes implemented in the WiiU version later. If the 3DS version is totally fucked, Nintendo can pass the buck and say the "real version" is due out this Fall. That would obviously be stupid, but it is a strategy nonetheless.

It's crazy that's it's coming out way earlier on 3DS considering the character parody etc. :/

You also think they would want to push the Wii U version more??

It'll encourage people to buy both games. If they launched on the same day, I wouldn't get the 3DS one. As it turns out, it looks like I'll have to buy the 3DS one as well because I'm not that patient.

@corruptedevil: I guess you could take that stance. A For Lulz mode would be potentially interesting, but it would be in a Just Cause Multiplayer or a Salty Bets sort of way. Playing with settings and shenanigans in local multiplayer where everyone knows it's gonna be weird seems like the best way to implement it.

Strike that: allowing you to save multiple custom profiles and share them online in the Miiverse seems like the best implementation. Fingers crossed.

Hello hyperbole.

Looking at this message board over the last several weeks (maybe even months) people are obsessed about other things. The only mention of Smash Bros. was that "Project M" thing. Forgive me if I thought people had moved onto other things. Forgive me if I am skeptical about people going "This is awesome!" because as far as I could tell no one here was thinking about it.

As someone into the smash scene, trust me when I say people do care about this. Just because one message board don't talk about a game don't mean no one is.

They're not stupid. WAAAAAAAAAY more people have 3DSes than Wii Us.

They win in two different ways:

The people who are really excited for the Wii U version aren't gonna see that the game is out 4 months early and go "no thanks, I DON'T want to be able to play it right now"

And then those same people when the Wii U version comes out aren't gonna go "no thanks, I don't need the one on the console that's dying for games and can play with an actual controller locally with my friends; I'M gonna stick with this handheld version".

It's very mercenary of them, but it's genius. I was having real trouble deciding which version I was gonna get. Now I'm probably gonna get both. I can't be the only one, either, this must be happening for an inconsequential number of people.

Great logic but it doesn't account for the fact that the WiiU release calendar is now a radioactive wasteland of nothing if you're not into bayoneta until the holiday season.

Just don't put it out on the Wii U. Keep burying your home console by putting everything worth buying on the handheld.

Pretty much how I feel. Smash Bros. (when combined with an at least semi-competent library of games, which the Wii-U still admittedly lacks) is a game that could have pushed me over the edge and made me buy one, but I totally don't have to, considering how all of the best stuff they're putting out is on 3DS. I'm really confused. have they given up on the Wii U, too? I have literally no need for one when I have a 3DS.

They said from the very beginning that the game would be both on Wii U and 3DS. They use the same rosters, but other than that, their feature sets aren't identical. Each has its own unique set of stages and exclusive gameplay modes, so the experience you get on the 3DS is not 100% analogous to the Wii U version. The 3DS comes well before the Wii U version, true, but it's also true that they're targeting the Wii U version for the holiday season, in turn giving them more time for polish on that version, which, as an HD console game, probably needs more time for development than the handheld version. It's also true that the 3DS and Wii U versions will interact in some way, and so it is possible that there may be features or content on the 3DS version that will be inaccessible or useless without the Wii U version to use in tandem.

This may be true, but unless the 3DS version is complete trash, it'll be good enough for me to get my fix. I doubt anyone but a huge, huge fan will go out and buy both versions, and those people probably already have a Wii U. I just think that Nintendo is making it waytoo easy to get my Nintendo fix without buying their console. New awesome Zelda game? Got it on my 3DS. Animal Crossing? Mario? Smash Brothers? All available on my 3DS, and they aren't reduced experiences in any way, aside from graphical fidelity, and that's not really something I (or, i assume, most Nintendo fans, by necessity) have very high on my priority list.

Not that your points aren't completely true and valid, or that I'm complaining that they are supporting the 3DS so well, I'm just very confused about their plan with the Wii U. I mean, it's obvious that it's coming to 3DS because that's where the hardware base is, but in their (appreciated) support of the 3DS, they are actively removing reasons for to go and buy a Wii U. I have no idea what they should do instead, but the way this is happening is still totally confusing to me, from a "we need to sell Wii u" perspective.

This was a great direct. Very informative and entertaining. I'm pretty sure Nintendo is releasing the 3DS version first because the install base is massive, and the sales will help re-coup development cost, and disappointing Wii-U sales.

I love the Wii-U because I still enjoy platforming and niche titles like W101. Smash is, and always has been, a game that brings lots of people together. I know my friends and I are excited to give Brawl and P.M. a rest and move on to the new stuff.

Oh and hell yeah on Greninja's inclusion. The absolute coolest pokemon from gen 6. Excellent choice to represent the new Pokemon games.

I remember trying to get into Smash with Brawl. I imported the game to get it early and played it a few times, so underwhelming.

I don't get the party appeal either, we always used to play Mario Kart instead. 8 is almost enough to tempt me to get a Wii U but not until it's even lower in price.

I've seen this said a few times and I'm not sure where the idea comes from. If the 3DS version was limited in some way or had a much smaller roster, I could maybe see the point, but it's exactly the same game, with all of the same modes, options and characters. The Wii version might have some kind of single player mode that the 3DS one is lacking, but that's going to have to be pretty special to get people who already own the game to run out and buy another copy of the same game and an expensive system to play it on.

@hailinel: absolutely. However, the question is why not just release it solely on the Wii-U? Nintendo needs to move Wii-U systems. Smash Bros (and Mario Kart) are the games to do it. I'm just afraid that not having 100% parity isn't going to get people to spend another $300+ to buy a Wii U and the game again.

@generic_username: pretty much! Look at what Microsoft was doing with Titanfall, or how well INfamous sold. We're thirsty for games and putting a "system seller" out months ahead on your more popular system isn't the best business idea. I could be wrong, but if you made it Wii U exclusive you would likely move Wii U units.

@mercury45: Nah I disagree, I'd rather have the Down-B move than the Trainer "gimmick" or whatever. I hope Ivysaur and maybe even Squirtle can return. If not, probably Sceptile can take Ivysaur's place for a grass type starter pokemon, since Fire and Water are slots taken. Also, all the other grass starters aren't anywhere near as cool/good for a game like this as Sceptile.

That fucking Pong assist trophy sold me on the game. That's fucking classic Smash Bros. even though I don't really even like the assist trophies. I also like the very frank approach to this video. It's just like "yo, here's the movesets for real" and "hey we realized attempting to balance the game and stretching the "lore" to make the characters more powerful would result in a better game for everyone."

Also I kind of hope they don't bring Falco back, Fox is really enough. If anything, Wolf would be a better pick, More variation in moveset, appearance, playstyle, as well as being a villain in general makes him a better choice.

Lastly, if the netcode is solid this game is shaping up to be really something, that Final Destination mode is cool for when you get tired of the stage hazards and little gimmicks and just like the cool backgrounds and music.

Man, I didn't really want to get the 3DS version (and I still don't think I will) so this is slightly sad news from my perspective. I guess it means I don't have to go buy a WiiU quite yet though? Ah well. Also, Charizard is cool and all, but he was my least favourite part of Pokémon Trainer in Brawl.

Also, to all those stalwarts of the classic controller who shun the Wiimote - I was one of you for the longest time, and then one of my friends (who is comfortably the best Smash player and was using a Wiimote as a 'handicap' due to our lack of GC controllers) encouraged me to join him in using one. I understand why you'd be reluctant to switch, because I took quite some convincing. But I'd seriously urge you to give it maybe five hours or so of your time just to get the hang of, because it's worth it.

It's now my preferred way to play - it takes some getting used to because of the button placements, but if you tweak the settings there's no loss of functionality and in fact probably gives you slightly quicker response time as the layout on the Wiimote means less moving your thumbs around between buttons. Probably still won't be for everyone, but it deserves a chance - and you might find you benefit from the change.

Plus the freedom to move your hands about independently while playing is a nice bonus.

@wackojackman: I really liked playing Zelda+Shiek because it meant I could play two different ways at any given time. Sure, a lot of people would JUST play Shiek, but both characters I feel had pros and cons that fit with my playstyle.

The Samus thing just kind of makes sense given that their Final Smashes were literally "Do some damage maybe, then turn into other one". I've always really hated Zero Suit Samus since it became the defacto sexy Nintendo lady but there's a growing tumblr-like crowd that claims it makes her "empowering" when she's just a video game character that has no inherit power so whatever.

tldr: Taking out the switch makes sense for Samus, will miss it on Zelda.

...that was my second thought too. It might be a sign I'm jaded about the whole thing but I am not feeling the hype at all. Its like the announcement on The Last of Us on the PS4: Nice but not a surprise and pretty far from "OMG!" territory.

Also going to say it is a HUGE mistake putting out the 3ds version first. WHile it is without a doubt going to sell 10 times more copies putting out the 3ds version first is tantamount to throwing the WiiU version under the bus as a large number of people would buy a wiiu just for smash and now not only do have to but dont even have to wait for a 3ds version. Yes Nintendo knows where their bread comes from at this point but hell if their doing this why make a WiiU version at all?

So excite! Can't wait to get this on my 3DS, a portable smash bros. is like a dream come true on the handheld, and I'm so glad they got multiplayer right and there's no lame "streetpass multiplayer" or local multiplayer only.

Poor choice for them to release this on the 3DS first in terms of sales. If they released it the other way around, it may have been an incentive for some people to go out and buy a Wii U.

A Sony fanboy criticizing Nintendo? That's like North Korea claiming that they're better than South Korea.

A. Who the fuck are you?

B. Your analogy makes zero fucking sense.

C. Who the fuck are you again?

D. I own all three of the "next gen" consoles as well as all the hand helds and a high end PC, so I think I'm pretty qualified to state my opinion on this. Nothing I said was even remotely biased...

E. But seriously, who the fuck are you?

was surprised the whole separation of 30 fps assists and 60 fps for main characters. Especially on 3DS.
