Telltale Nabs Xbox 360 Publishing Licensor Agreement, Makes Us Curious

The episodic adventure creator apparently has some plans we're not aware of yet.

Confused at the headline? Understandable.

Just after announcing Jurassic Park: The Game has been moved from a later-this-month release into the fall, Telltale Games has announced a publishing licensor agreement for Xbox 360. A what now? At the moment, we don't know the motivation; Telltale isn't willing to talk about the reasons behind this move.

“Adding console support to our acknowledged expertise in digital downloads is another positive step in our long-term growth strategy,” said Telltale co-founder and CEO Dan Connors in the press release. “We are pleased to expand the size of our potential audience by encompassing the Xbox 360 console consumer and bring our vision of video gaming to them."

To date, Telltale has been laser focused on digital download platforms. This could signal Telltale moving into the retail space, though whether it's for anything more than issuing bundles of episodic adventures isn't known. Issuing a press release over the agreement may suggest bigger plans.

After being asked on Twitter, Telltale had nothing more to tell fans.

"No announcements on what's coming to the XBox 360 from us yet but we have some exciting stuff in store!" the company said, understandably cryptically. "Stay tuned!"

We don't really have a choice in the matter, so we will, Telltale, we will.

I would love to get Back to the Future action on the Xbox!  I hope it is arcade releases and not limited to a disc.

I wonder if this means that there going to do a non-episodic game?

@Andorski: Yeah, considering MS lost a lot of potiential customers by missing out on Monkey Island, Sam & Max season 3 and BttF, I'm guessing they've revised their policy on the episodic thing.  As long as Telltale stick to their format of releasing an episode each month, I don't see the problem anyway.

It's not like Sega where we got Sonic 4 episode 1 and it could be years before we see Episode 2 (I'd bet that the series has been completely scrapped or totally overhauled).

Great was hoping for XBL versions of their games, and highly confused why they have not landed before on the platform.

I thought TellTale stopped developing for the 360 because Microsoft's XBL policy did not allow for consumers to pre-purchase full seasons, and that this agreement would allow them to do so.

Whatever 360 game they end up doing, the end boss needs to be called LICENSOR.

It would be nice if they brought BTTF to XBL. Then I would have to get off my FA to go in to town and buy PSN points cards since I wont be putting my CC number on my PS3 after it got all FUBAR!

I don't think any of their games will be 360-exclusive, though. I remember one of the devs saying their slogan was "As many games on as many different consoles as possible".

Jurassic Park = a mainstream title. mainstream = buys in stores.

Seems pretty logical to me.

Well Telltale hasn't been releasing on 360 since Wallace and Gromit so I would assume this is just them getting back on XBLA. But I could see retail releases as well, especially with all the big licensed stuff they releasing now.

I would imagine, given the timing of this announcement, that this is in response to the on-going drama with PSN. It's a shame as Telltale could be the first of many developers to start jumping from Sony's ship.

I neverunderstood why so little of the Telltale stuff ended up on the 360. It seemed like an odd thing for sony to go out of their way to get exlusivity for, so that never seemed like the right explanation. I guess we'll find out soon enough what they have planned

Note that the PC version of Tales of Monkey Island got a retail release in the UK from Telltale themselves. It would be reasonable to assume that Telltale would want to do something similar to 360 versions. It might be dodging Microsoft's digital distribution rules as well.

It'd be ridiculous if this was so they could release Episode 1 of any series on disc, and then support it in a timely fashion with the other Episodes as "DLC" to get around Microsoft's stupid submission process. Though that might not work anyway, and I'm just talking out of my ass.

Yeah, this means that they can self publish now. Previously, MS put out their games.

I do hope that they release BTTF on the 360.  I was going to buy it on the PS3 once all the episodes were available, but now I don't see myself buying anything on the PS3 for a good long while.

Having said that it will probably be cheap as dirt on Steam in a couple months and that's most likely how I'll end up playing it.

Jurassic Park is already confirmed for 360 back when platforms were announced. Though the XBLA and PSN versions would not have come out at the same time as the PC version if not for the delay.

cool.

tell tale games on more platforms is awesome.

I guess this means they will publish there games on XBLA now.   normally a indy developer had to ether let MS publish there game on XBLA which means making it a exclusive or already have a publisher.

so I guess this means they met MS's publisher requirements and we can look forward to xbox releases of future games from them again???/

I would love to see Telltales back catalog released as Kinect optional games on 360. Kinect needs software, and these sore of adventures games would be killer apps.

Disc based Jurassic Park confirmed?

Between this, and the delay of the PC/MAC version, it seems likely.

EDIT: Received the 'First' quest for this post, even though it's the tenth. :)

Telltale have released their games at retail before. The first two seasons of Sam & Max were disk based on the Wii. But that made sense for the wii, the extremely strict size limit for downloadable games on the console must be a real pain in the ass for telltale, so retail releases for the Wii made total sense. The 360 is fine for downloadable games though, so this is definitely a curious move. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

The publishing licensor agreement that they just received allows them to publish retail Xbox 360 games (i.e.: Disc-based games).
