That Latest Fallout: New Vegas Patch for Xbox 360? Yeah, Don't Install It

Reports of saves translating into frequent game crashes have Bethesda regrouping.

Hold onto your butts, Vault Dwellers.

Even though Xbox Live is demanding you update your copy of Fallout: New Vegas with the latest patch, publisher Bethesda Softworks is separately demanding you decline the update.

What? Exactly.

Players have reported repeated crashes on Xbox 360 upon loading game saves, after the update. Bethesda looked into it and found plenty of validity to the claims...

"Regarding the Xbox 360 update, we’ve discovered a solution to the issue that’s causing problems with game saves," said the company on its blog. "We’ll be hosting a replacement update on Xbox LIVE as soon as humanly possible. If you haven’t grabbed the New Vegas update on 360 today, we recommend you decline the update until the new one is live. We’ll be sure to let you know when it’s up."

That's right: a patch for a patch! Such is the age of games we live in, apparently, though one has to wonder how a botched patch survived both development and certification without anyone catching this bad boy.

I love me some Fallout, but this? This isn't right.

Glad I play on the PC. Sucks for everyone on the 360 version, though.

Is this a crash bug for the 360 itself, or just for the New Vegas bootup?

No wonder it was released buggy when they still have trouble fixing it months after release.

Damn I installed it but things are working fine. It did tell me that the Dead Money DLC no longer existed.... I suppose that's my punishment for buying it in the first place.

Someone needs to take New Vegas out back and put a bullet in it. Old girl had a good run, but she's old. Needs to be taken care of.

Silver lining to PSN being offline. Crazy people can't break your game saves until May 3rd at the earliest.

By the way, the last patch for 100 Rogues on the iPhone was like this too. Not cool.

@Olivaw: Actually, I heard they traced the problems related with the patch to a file by Microsoft, so it isn't necessarily their fault.

Doesn't Microsoft have lengthy approval procedures for patches? I mean, plenty of developers complain about the length of time MS takes to approve updates to games. I specifically remember the Super Meat Boy update not arriving on consoles for many weeks after Team Meat said they had submitted it to MS, and every time they were asked, they said it was on MS, not them. So how did this slip though? Surely if MS are doing such lengthy tests, shit like this shouldn't happen.

So don't install the patch that is required or else you can't be logged into Xbox Live?

Come on. This was on the forums for some time. It seems a bit off when you see news on the forums before you see it from journalists.

The game will load up fine.  The problem is with loading your saved games.  As soon as you do an error message about not having some of the DLC required for that game pops up (which is hilarious because I never bought the DLC).  If you ignore the error and continue loading the game will freeze on the loading screen.

My impression is that you can start a new game, but I don't really feel like replaying those 20-30 hours I put in already.

The patch work just fine, it's just that you can't load your current save file because of DLC error, and if you continue to load it will freeze the game. I had no problem starting a new game because, truly, this patch is a god send because of the performance optimizations.

You'd think the ability to patch games post launch would help improve games not make them more buggy.

Too bad as I did this & seeing the same amount of lockups as before now with messages of DLC not being available. Would have liked it if they did the DLC support/variety for this like Fallout3, seems at times that they moved on past doing more for this game.

@Little_Socrates: All other things being equal, it would be worse on PC since Steam auto-updates. At least on the 360 you have to confirm each update.

Yes, I know you can turn off auto-update but honestly, who does it? If I'm worried about Steam eating bandwidth while I'm playing a non-Steam game online I just close Steam or launch it through Steam.

@MattyFTM: It's almost impressive to think about the amount of cross-checking incompetence that would have to go on for a patch like this to go through unchanged. And you'd think they'd read the code especially carefully with Obsidian after the near-broken launch of New Vegas in the first place; do they just want to be unable to sell Obsidian's games anymore?

The PC version is worlds better than at launch, but I still have a hard time convincing myself to play it anymore. I *really* want to like it as much as I liked Fallout 3, but... meh. It just feels off somehow. If I had the 360 version and lost my save because of this, I'd swear off the game for good.

Oh, I see now why I was able to play the game after the patch - I started a new game instead of loading the old one started months ago. It was only one hour of play anyway.

BUT that doesn't mean I didn't encounter problems. I have a Brazilian X360 set to English instead of Portuguese, and now the game displays a number of dialog options and HUD lines in... Spanish!
At first I thought it was due to Dead Money, which I bought but haven't played yet. But even simple, standard dialog options - such as the 'Goodbye' one in almost every conversation - come out in Spanish sometimes. Fortunately Spanish and Portuguese are similar enough I can understand the messed up lines, but it's still... Well, messed up :)

I'm still wondering how a game as broken as this is got released in th first place. I have the PS3 version so I anticipate seeing this same story in the next couple of weeks with Xbox 360 crossed out and PS3 put in.

@MattyFTM:
The Microsoft "certification process" is designed to ensure that the game says "Saving content. Please don't turn off your Xbox 360 console." instead of something generic and to ensure it handles the controller being disconnected properly and whatnot. It has very little to do with making sure your game actually you know, works. It's ridiculous that Microsoft doesn't catch these things but it's more ridiculous that Bethesda puts so little value in ensuring that their products and patches release in good condition. Bethesda products dating back to the early 90s have a history of this. When I bought the first Terminator game for DOS back in I think it was 1990, the game was so broken that simply answering the copy protection question had a 50% chance of crashing the game. They don't care about final quality but given their sales, they don't have to.

If you already got the update, you can delete it from your Memory>Hard Drive>Games> Fallout New Vegas folder (it is Title Update #3). This fixed everything for me and my girlfriend. However, I have heard some people saying it can corrupt your saves too, so hopefully you can fix your issue before the game breaks your saves.

Goddamn am I pleased I saw this. Was about to get back into Fallout this evening and i've got a save which is over 200hrs old.

I really don't understand how this can happen. I was sympathetic to Bethesda about the glitches in the game, because I didn't see too many anyway, and it is a huge, huge game. However this is just dumb incompetence.
