Thatgamecompany Now An Independent Entity

Thanks to outside funding, the Journey maker is free to go multiplatform.

The path to independence is long and fraught with peril, but thatgamecompany has arrived.
The path to independence is long and fraught with peril, but thatgamecompany has arrived.

Up to this point, Journey and Flower developer thatgamecompany has been largely in the corner of Sony Computer Entertainment, thanks to a three game deal the developer signed with the company. With that deal now fulfilled, thatgamecompany has officially made the move to become its own independent company.

Posting on the company's official blog, creative director Jenova Chen announced that the developer has received a $5.5 million infusion of cash from Benchmark Capital, and will be striking out on its own from here on out. This means that the studio is now free to pursue multiplatform development for its next, as-yet-unannounced project.

For those hoping for an eventual port of Journey on other consoles, don't hold your breath. As part of the original deal with Sony, those three games remain exclusive to PlayStation platforms. But considering the consistent rise in quality thatgamecompany has shown with each successive release, there's still good reason to be excited about whatever the team has cooking coming to a wider slate of platforms.

Does the fact that I really want Thatgamecompany to make a third person character-action game make me a bad person?

I knew this was coming. It's the best move for them but I don't know why Sony didn't sign them for more games. None of there PSN games will come to other platforms because Sony owns the rights to the Flower and Journey IP. Also Jouney won't work on 360 anyway because of the restrictions that MS have in place

It seems like Sony did a great job with them but hopefully this means they can bring their work to more platforms which would be awesome to see.

Well I enjoyed Journey quite a bit, and making their next project a multiplatform game would increase their exposure so good news to everyone!

This sounds good I'm so sick of this exclusive bullshit it's bad for the consumer and it's bad for the developers the only people it helps is the console makers.

@WilliamHenry: obviously I didn't read the last part ^_^ was in a rush when I commented. However I still stand by my comment, I don't think one DL game is worth a purchase of a second console... however I'm very excited about their future project

TGC's Community Manager is hinting pretty strongly on NeoGAF not to expect their next game on 360.

Ha. The "macro$haft" thing was sort of hilarious.

I was gonna buy Journey yesterday, but then I got Playstation Plus instead. Probably the right choice?

I thought Journey was one of the best downloadable games I have ever played. While plus is fine in it's own right, I just never see anything worth playing on there.

Wait what?
Nothing worth playing on Plus, you're insane.

@Nakiro: Actually I'm not, most of the stuff on there is just not interesting to me. Not to say it isn't worth it for some people, but there has never been a moment when I thought "oh man I -have- to get a plus subscription".

Maybe not a Journey PC port, but perhaps in the future Journey 2 style of game on the Ipad or PC. I think this is great news for them, they got help by sony to get known and out of the gate, now others see their potential and they are growing. Fantastic really. GOOD JOB THATGAMECOMPANY!
