The Best Possible News About Tekken 6: No Character Unlocks

Remember playing through every Tekken game ever released about 30 times? Yeah, no more of that.

See ya soon, you crotchety old bastard.
Heihachi  be praised, Namco has seen the light!

There's a time-honored tradition among fighting games of forcing you to play through the arcade mode--against the boring AI, naturally--over and over ad nauseam to open up access to all the playable characters. Thankfully, it's a tradition Namco Bandai is finally casting off with Tekken 6, according to an interview on VideoGamer.com with director Katsuhiro Harada (saw this on 1UP). Good news; in my view, Tekken has generally been the most egregious offender in this category.

Why we locked the characters originally was that in the arcades, it was kind of to extend the life of the game by gradually unlocking characters. And also with the home versions as well, because you can rent games or whatever, it was to protect us against that.

That’s kind of outdated now though, especially with online play. If we were to have locked characters it would irritate a lot of people, to be playing against others online and to not have all the characters available. So I think it’s no longer useful.

'Tis music to mine ears, because, man, that is one outdated mechanic. I very grudgingly played through Street Fighter IV just enough times to get almost everyone, but I never did get around to unlocking Seth. There's no bigger bummer than getting a new fighting game and hopping online only to face characters you can't choose yourself, and I'm glad Namco's come around to that fact.

Gut check time: Who's still a Tekken fan around here? It's a big year for fighting games; is this your game? Here's a reminder of how it's shaping up.

That could be a good thing I guess.

Fighting Genre FTW!

That was one of my more favorite parts of Tekken. I liked playing through will all the characters to get the unlockables. Oh well.

I enjoy Tekken. You gotta love playing as King.  I never really minded unlocking characters though.  I usually play through the arcade mode with everyone anyways.

I'd yell in joy for out-of-the-box-playability, but this is a fighting game. You still have to look up the moves on Strategy Wiki, but at least you don't have to look up the characters this time.

Cant wait for Tekken 6, I had so much fun playing Dark Ressurection on PSP and with Tekken 1,2,3 way back when with my brothers. It might not be the best fighting game (and not even my personal favourite since that honour falls to Soul Blade) but its so much fun I cant pass it up.

I wish every fighting game did this.

That is indeed good news, excellent new in fact cause I always hated playing as Jack, and you have to to unlock all the characters, and now I won't have to. YIPPIE!!!!

Sweet, I know a lot of people critisize Tekken, but I personally enjoy it.

I still remember playing Tekken Tag Tournament with my best friend back in the day.  Those were the real days of summer.

Never liked Tekken and I most probably never will. Still, I'm glad the fighting genre has made such a great comeback!

Better news would have been Tekken 6 got canned.

Awesome, I sort of wish Street FIghter IV did this. But I like they way Smash Bros. Melee did it.

I'm going to continue ignoring fighting games over here.

Looking forward to this.  However, I was never one to really get too upset over locked characters.  To me, half the fun is unlocking these new characters to play with, but I certainly see why they're doing it.

Its cool to hear about no character unlocks, but I could do either way

Posted by BagManForHire

thats cool i still play tekken cant wait for it to come out

Posted by manathirst

Thank god, it was painful and frustrating unlocking all the chars in SF4.  I gave up unlocking past the 6th colour.

Posted by artofwar420

I liked it, when I played it in a friends PS2, I'm not that great though, so... I don't know.

Posted by Lazyaza

Sweet, hope other companies do this too. Such a stupid out dated idea to have to unlock shit you paid for.

Posted by KingBroly

Someone finally got the message.

Posted by Haseo

Not to happy about that, the fact you had to unlock the characters was a great motivation to play through the game more.  Now their all unlock there seems very little point to play the arcade mode much at all.

What's with the fat white dudes in fighting games these days?

Posted by JackiJinx

That's the only feature I really like about fighting games. Now what do I have?

Posted by K9

I personally enjoyed unlocking characters. Not knowing beforehand what lies beyond the gray square in the character selection screen and then getting the message of getting some new character unlocked after completing the arcade mode was really fun in all the previous fighting games that I played. I don't agree with the idea that just because there is online play having locked characters becomes pointless because let's face it, online play in fighting games is still not efficient enough for these types of games to be enjoyable.

So in such circumstances it is still a good idea to have locked characters and items that act as an additional incentive to play the game. By having everything unlocked you are just taking this additional incentive away.

I know Tekken tends to be unpopular with the super-serious fighting game crowd. Which, along with the weird sense of humor and crazy roster of characters, is why it's my favorite fighting game out there. I'd rather have fun than listen to some toolbox talk about frame counting and blahblahblahidontcare. Plus? You can fight as a big fat bear. Awesome.

cool thing is that it doesnt hurt the people that still want to play arcade mode with every character. i would even do a cool achievement for it.

im not afraid to say this - I LOVE TEKKEN!!!!!

Posted by DaViCuTTeR

Don't see a reason why I'd want this game anyway.  It doesn't look much different than the previous iteration, other than the MK -style changing environments.  This game is coming out way too soon, Namco should've gave us a chance to actually miss the Tekken franchise first.  Talk about jumping the gun.

Sounds like a good idea.

That's all well and good, but why is there no BLAZBLUE love from the GB crew? I search and there's nothing. Jeff and everyone in the world who gives a shit about fighters should play this game. Not to mention that you can get the LE for only $60 right NOW.

smart move!

I bought Tekken 5 but I haven't traditionally been a fan of the series. I just kind of mash my way through it most of the time because I like the cutscenes and absurdity.

Posted by needforswede

I personally like unlocking characters, to feel like I've earned something I guess.  But I guess I could just as easily get the same feeling from getting an A on an exam or something. Either way, this is a cool idea.  Tekken 6 apparently has a ton of characters so it would be a pain to have to unlock so many of them.  Fighting games really are making a huge comeback though, and I'm loving it.  I haven't played a Tekken game since Tag Tournament, but I miss the series.  It's everything that Dead Or Alive always wanted to be (no offense, DOA, but you're just a bouncy-boob parade).

I actually enjoy unlocking things like characters, if I didn't suck really bad I would be enjoying it in SF4 right now... I guess achieves/trophies serve as good reward replacements but I think it is kinda lame to take out unlocks.

Posted by Sparky_Buzzsaw

That's cool!  But I'm sure my half-retarded ass will play through as every character anyways, just for cinematics and end-stories.  I enjoy the hell out of Tekken.

Meh i like unlocking things, including characters.

Doesn't matter anyway, Tekken is so 10 years ago for me now, give me some Blazblue

Eh, not in my case, some good ol' Tekken's some good ol Tekken, and that's fine with me. Granted I was five ten years ago, but still...though I do agree with you about BlazBlue, that game looks rather amazing.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Tekken series, having played and owned them since 2, and always finding something to like in all of them. Personally, I thought Tekken 4 for PS2 was unfairly criticized to an extent, as that was probably the best one I've played in terms of gameplay and stage design.

Needless to say, I'm excited for this one, even though I'm already following the arcade community through countless online videos and fansites, as well as even playing the game itself in the arcades for a while back in Southeast Asia.

I like unlocking the characters, it gives you a reason to play singleplayer and get familiar with characters i'm probably not going to bother playing with now : / Plus it gives me a sense of progression.

A good move, we don't need this nonsense in modern fighting games.

Posted by ChickenPants

Still is my favourite fighting game ever.

Posted by SumDeus

tekken is still my favorite fighting game series

Posted by FlipperDesert

When I don't suck at it, I'm still a big Tekken fan, I suppose it's my inner child's fondness for Tekken 3.

And the upskirt shots of Xiaoyu, of course.

Posted by babz

im superrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Tekken fan

Posted by TheRandomKo

Well, you'll most likely have to play through with each character to unlock all the ending cinemas.. :)

Posted by The_A_Drain

As much as I hate Tekken, this decisions is never bad in a fighting game. Unlocking characters sucks balls. It's fine for other games, but competitive fighters, imo it was about the only mistake in SFIV.

Posted by VichusSmith

I like unlocking characters, especially if I don't know how to unlock people when I first play a game.

I think that if you play online, you should have access to all the characters right away, but I think that playing 1p arcade mode needs some kind of reward to it. Unlocking characters is one such reward

I'm a big Tekken fan,definitly getting this!
