The Elder Scrolls Online Will Finally Bring The Elder Scrolls Online

New MMO in the works at Zenimax Online Studios will bring the full world of Tamriel to online players.

The rather stylishly spartan cover spread.
The rather stylishly spartan cover spread.

It's been rumored for a while, and Game Informer has finally confirmed it via their new cover: The next chapter in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise will be a MMORPG.

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently in development at Zenimax Online Studios, and is designed to let players explore the full breadth of the world of Tamriel, "from Elsweyr to Skyrim and everywhere in between."

The Game Informer cover story will cover single-player quests, public dungeons, and even a player-driven PvP element that features three warring factions all vying for the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne. Additionally, a short teaser trailer is expected to launch tomorrow.

The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled for a 2013 release on both PC and Mac platforms.

A Borderlands style drop in drop out 4-8 player multiplayer gaming world set in the Elder Scrolls universe would be something I'd love to play but Elder Scrolls MMO isn't blowing my skirt up. I could be persuaded to try a Fallout MMO one day though.

After playing the jewel that is Skyrim, I was pretty much guaranteed to buy the next Elder Scrolls game... or so I thought.

This is awesome ive spent over 200 hours with oblivion and skyrim, to be able to co-op with friends and raid dungeons sounds great. Wonder if it will use the Skyrim engine though?

Considering it spans the entire of Tamriel, I'll assume not. It'll be insanely awesome if it does, but there's no way they can get in the same level of detail to all those different reasons, and it's the main reason I'm thinking it's just going to be another shallow WoW/TOR game.

I don't like mmos, I think this will be the most broken mmo upon launch ever and yet still I'm going to sub (I'm assuming it's subs) for the first month at least. Purely so I can explore the entirety of Tamriel, motherfucking Morrowind mainland, fuck year! And just saying, Tamriel isn't the world, Nirn's the world. Tamriel's a continent.

The more I think about it, the more I think Bethesda should go with a more Minecraft system where going full on MMO seems more and more a bad idea the longer I consider it.

A make your own fun, sandbox style MMO is probably the best fit for the series. Building homes, roleplaying NPC's and all that. If they're trying to hook players in with the tried and true quest/loot/level/grind system and archetype classes, they're taking the easy way out. That shit is just naturally addictive, not good game design.

Hrrrm, yes. The whole time I was wandering around Maar Gan in Morrowind, I couldn't help thinking, "Fuck, I wish I could be the dude responsible for hollowing out all of the giant bug carcasses these fools are living in. That would be way more rad than exploring tombs."

Chances that this will go with TES tradition MMO-side is low.
Chances that this will be a TES mmo played like an ordinary MMO are high.
Chances I will give a hump what it plays like are microscopic. This is like the one fantasy IP I wanted an MMO of.

Will the Skyrim in the Elder Scrolls MMO be as big as it is in TES:V? What about the other areas?

This is what I most want to know about this.

When will single player RPG creators get the hint that the public just isn't interested in their poorly realized MMOs?

And we certainly don't want MMOs from a series that can't even produce a single player game not riddled with bugs and game breaking issues.

No thanks.  Toss it on the pile with Final Fantasy 14..

Finally, an Elder Scrolls game that I can play for a lot of hours but with the added benefit of the things that I hate about MMOs.

I guess that's not fair until there are details. Of course every MMO that's promised to be different and play well has been a lie.

Love how people are writing this off after all they've seen is the font of the title. People are dumb.

The reasons seem logical enough to me. The Elder Scrolls gameplay has always the exact opposite of what MMO's are, so it's not surprising people are resistant.

If it's first person, focused on exploring and still feels like the Elder Scrolls, I'm in.. but come on, it's going to be nothing more than a WoW clone. I'll care if/when that turns out not to be the case.

Well, people complain over Skyrim's combat being the weakest part of it. And why keep a first person view if it doesn't enhance the gameplay? I've been hoping for a mandatory third person view in ES since Daggerfall.

I agree. It will be interesting to see how the core identity of the Elder Scrolls franchise translates into an online format. Hopefully, it will translate spectacularly well, and we'll finally get the opportunity to explore Tamriel with others.

I don't understand all the hate on this thread. Why would one hope this endeavor is not a success?

Fuck. I love The Elder Scrolls but I can't get into MMORPGs (and I've tried plenty of 'em). I really hope this isn't a FF XI situation with this being The Elder Scrolls VI in place of a single-player-only game.

Well...Fuck. This is a terrible prospect. The only way this could work is by it being the least 'MMORPG' MMORPG ever. It has to break the mould completely.

My issue is that I don't want the impact of the main series to diminish, and I know it's a different developer, but my problem is that each game in the series, aside from Arena, introduced you to a new province each time, and each time it was magical.

So when in the MMO i see Summerset Isle fully mapped out, then what? does a potential future main game just crib from that? That would be depressing. The only thing left really interesting would be story, but then at what point does the MMO fuck that up too? I guess everything would have to pre-date whatever Era the MMO is in, because to me these games a very isolated experiences.

Depending on whether it actually keeps to the spirit of the main games, it looks like I'll have to block it out of existence for the time being.

Oy vey. Can you imagine the amount of bugs this game will have? Also: no modding. I am sure they will have stuff similar to Lua Scripting, but there won't be the personal touches found in the single player games on the PC. Also, this thing will be an absolute system hog and will be totally un-optimized. No thanks. Also, this won't even be ready for human consumption til like 2017.

I too echo the "MMO? Pass." sentiment. I''m sure it will be fine and fans of the series who do like MMOs will yadda yadda yadda. They better have Fallout 4 news next year.

I hope its good and fun. I'll certainly play it. But mmos are mmos ultimately, and its not what I want from the Elder Scrolls name.
