The Elder Scrolls Online Will Finally Bring The Elder Scrolls Online

New MMO in the works at Zenimax Online Studios will bring the full world of Tamriel to online players.

The rather stylishly spartan cover spread.
The rather stylishly spartan cover spread.

It's been rumored for a while, and Game Informer has finally confirmed it via their new cover: The next chapter in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise will be a MMORPG.

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently in development at Zenimax Online Studios, and is designed to let players explore the full breadth of the world of Tamriel, "from Elsweyr to Skyrim and everywhere in between."

The Game Informer cover story will cover single-player quests, public dungeons, and even a player-driven PvP element that features three warring factions all vying for the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne. Additionally, a short teaser trailer is expected to launch tomorrow.

The Elder Scrolls Online is scheduled for a 2013 release on both PC and Mac platforms.

Very excited at the prospect of being able to cross all of Tamriel in a single game, though I'm reserving judgement until more details emerge.

Like I said before, if this is literally an ES game (preferably Skyrim) but online, then I can see the appeal.

If this is an online game "Set in the world of ES!" Then I have zero interest.

How exactly is the Elder Scrolls franchise well-suited to an MMO? How will they adapt it without completely abandoning what people love about the series?

Welp, can't turn out any worse than TOR, right?

I think it actually could. The Elder Scrolls have always had a strong focus on the personal experience, exploring, being isolated, etc. How is any of that going to come across in an MMO? Old Republic at least still feels like it's part of the same series as the previous games, this is more than likely going to turn out to be a generic WoW clone, completely removed from what we want and expect from the series.

It could turn out good.. but I'm not holding my breath.

I can't wait to see how buggy Bethesda can make this game.

An MMO misses the very point of what the Elder Scrolls is about.

A typical MMO yes, but if they can create something new it can be interesting. When I played Fallout 3 I often thought "I wish I could show off my apartment to my friends." So I think multiplayer can do some good, but not if they just create a typucal MMO in the ES universe.

Wow people, have a little faith in Bethesda. Normally I would avoid an MMO like the plague, but I'm certainly interested to see where this goes. Just because it's an MMO doesn't mean it has to be terrible.

I hate to point this out but Bethesda doesn't have a great track record for their modern games which are complex enough as single player games. Now you suggest we should have faith that they can handle the up front capital costs, huge increase in complexity in the backend, client, and "rule sets"?

Skyrim was their most stable release they have done in decades but it had crippling issues. In an MMO market letting bugs sit for weeks or months will kill the game entirely. The MMO marketplace is littered with a lot of dead games that failed to execute in one way or another. The odds are stacked pretty high against Bethesda no matter how you look at the situation.

This situation reminds me of Square-Enix where they too thought it would be easy to take their brand strong, easily recognizable RPG and scale it up to MMO levels and rake in the money. It turns out FF11 works but it was much much much more work than initially thought and FF14 was a disaster.

As long as they stay away from shitty 'MMO quests' and shitty endgame grinding, and generally everything that's shitty about MMOs then I'm all for this. I want an Elder Scrolls MMO, not an MMO that reminds me of Elder Scrolls.

@JuxJuxJux: Two completely different studios and circumstances. But when a game from a proven development studio is announced that has been worked on for years it's stupid to automatically assume that it's going to be bad.

As this is made by Zenimax Online Studios which hasn't developed any games yet, I'm a bit sceptical.

I sure hope that part of the Bethesda Game Studios is making Fallout 4 right now...

How well would the series even adapt to an MMO format anyway? Would it be like a massively multiplayer Grand Theft Auto? I imagine that's the only way to keep the original appeal, by keeping exploration and random world events in the game.

Who asked for this? Love the series but I think an mmo is the wrong direction for it, maybe co-op but even that might be too far. Not sure how the gameplay would even translate to multiplayer without some significant changes. I'm not too surprised though, I imagine we'll see mass effect online eventually.

@matthias2437: If you're talking about Bethesda, the only thing they've proven is that they're overly ambitious to the point of releasing buggy/broken games. I'm not saying that their games aren't 'good' in the sense that they have decent story lines, quests, etc., but I am saying that they're usually busted, and that ruins a LOT of the enjoyment I personally get out of their games. So yeah, it might be stupid to assume that the game will be bad, but I'm not assuming that. I'm assuming that it will be broken and thus ruin the experience for me (and probably plenty of other people).

What a bunch of moaning fuckheads. You haven't even heard any details or viewed any potential gameplay. Thousands of people bitched about the lack of coop/multiplayer when Skyrim was released - so perhaps they are attempting to appease their fans etc.

Personally, if this is like Skyrim, but with coop/multiplayer then I for one would be excited for this. People hear MMO and they think WoW gameplay. If they do go that route then Ill poopoo this announcement with the rest of you. But until that time why don't we reserve judgement huh.

ZERO interest

Why did I buy Skyrim? Because it has many rare things

1. Expansive single player

2. No day 1 dlc ripped out or shitty costumes/cheat codes for sale

3. No exclusive in game pre order bullshit

4. No online pass bullshit.

An elder scrolls mmo couldn't be further from what I want.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of the Elder Scrolls games? They're meant to be single player MMOs, so... this will be a multiplayer singleplayer mmo... with much worse graphics because they need to program it for the lowest common denominator.

The last beloved properties that tried to make the leap from single player RPG to MMO were Final Fantasy and KOTOR, and honestly they're not doing all that great. Why put that ongoing burden on yourselves?

The Elder Scrolls online? Bethesda can't even code a working single-player game.
