The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim To Use New Engine

So long, floating people, spinning heads, and dupe glitches.

It's been confirmed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will not use The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion's engine, the aging Gamebryo-powered tech that most recently powered Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3.

Bethesda community manager Nick Breckon busted out this news over the weekend via Twitter, calling Skyrim's engine "all-new" and adding that it "looks fantastic." Rock, Paper, Shotgun followed up with Breckon soon after, asking if this new engine is some sort Gamebryo variant. Breckon replied with, "it's a new graphics/gameplay engine built internally. We'll have more details down the road."

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==Breckon's comments appear to shoot down the popular speculation that the next Elder Scrolls game from Bethesda would be using id Tech 5, id Software's newfangled engine it's using for Rage. This rumor started circulating after id was acquired by Bethesda parent company ZeniMax

Engines aren't always that interesting a topic, but this one in particular has been the backbone of several freakishly buggy and load-screen-heavy games like New Vegas. The move to a new engine is a promising one for a new Elder Scrolls game, which is almost sure to be a lengthy and complex affair. I think most New Vegas (and even Oblivion) fans would agree with me that dealing with "old" Gamebryo for extended periods of time is a bummer because of its issues and age.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was announced via trailer during the 2010 Video Game Awards. If you missed the show, no worries. Said trailer is just below.

Bethesda, can you please actualy give a rats ass about PS3 development this time around? please? the only good PS3 version of any of your games this gen was Oblivion, and that was only due to it having a year extra of dev time.

Oh thank god the other reports were wrong. Quite the relief.

This is, of course, also good news for future Fallout games. Let's hope that Gamebryo is finally in the ground. And let us salt the earth so it may never rise again.

That engine was spectacularly average on the release of Oblivion, my jaw was on the floor seeing no major improvents in the New Vegas Quick Look +4 years later.

I read some things about tessellation and it seems like the really detailed and good looking stuff is barely achievable on a high-end pc and not at all on consoles, so I really wonder how far they will go with that. I would love to see something "breathtaking" on the pc again, but I don't expect it from a multiplatform game, to be honest.

Awesome, excited about a new engine.  Now if only we can get some decent animations and at least a livable 3rd person view.  If that happened I might be terribly addicted to this new game.

I am so utterly excited for this game, it's hardly believable my pants don't have a gaping hole in the crotch from the massive erection I have for it. The Elder Scrolls have been my favorite game series to date, and I honestly wish I could go into a coma until it comes out.

This early trailer, has got me pretty intrigued, because it's already looking epic, and not because there's no gameplay.

I might just have to give Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, another try again someday on the PC.  I really wanted to love it, but I got bored after wandering around all the time, and that was because I didn't want to follow the plot.

I'm still taking a wait and see approach. I dislike busted-ass games and I don't trust Bethesda until I see the proof.

So no. It sort of isn't.     And the news isn't old. It's from yesterday.

Thats a given.  EVERY Bethesda game going back to Arena has been buggy as shit.  Christ you should have seen Daggerfall, and the glory that was randomly generated dungeons.

Bethesda does one thing well, huge open world games that look great for their time.  I really wish they would focus more on atmosphere and personality.  The towns, and NPCs have absolutely none.

Also :-/ really hoped they were going to use Rage....I think not having to waist time on a engine would have been great for them, let alone using something as great as Rage.

Is it just me or is this console cycle defined by developers really taking lessons from previous games to heart? Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I really am shocked and impressed most of the time just how much the developers fix/improve in the sequels over the originals. New engine seems like a drastic, yet much needed, step in the right direction, although I am surprised they would make two engines in one generation. Surely, they won't be using the same one in the new console generation, will they?

The engine wasn't the problem with Bethesda games, it was just their crappy programming. Look up the games that run on Gamebryo and the Bethesda games are the only ones that look the way they do with so many bugs. I love their games but they really gotta go through some more testing before release.

This is great news! If these types of open-world games ship with less bugs, their reviews will finally reflect the joy of playing them. It's always been: "It's GOTY, but, only if we were to set aside critical bugs".

I think once Oblivion came out, Bethesda became more interested with getting games out on time rather than quality.

with a new engine comes new bugs. but maybe the bugs will be less noticeable than previous gamebryo games.  even if its the buggiest engine ever, ill still play this and love it, because oblivion and fallout 3 have the most hours logged into any game i have ever played.  ever.

WUT.  When Oblivion released it was nothing even remotely close to average.  Oblivion was hallmark in its extensive use of complex pixel shaders, Shader Model 3.0 specifically, a proper weather simulation and extremely expansive environments (at least from a visual standpoint).  At that stage the only game engine which had done anything like it at the same level was CryEngine 1 as used in Far Cry.

Daggerfall is a really great example of this, even with fan made patches the game is nearly impossible to finish because of the bugs and over all design of the game.  Though if anyone was impressed by the size and scale of Oblivion or Fallout 3, you really should go back and check out Daggerfall.  It was imense.

I have a feeling the reasons will present themselves once Rage gets a little closer to release. "
id tech 5 kind of went back to light maps in terms of lighting, thanks to megatexture's support of adding however many art assets in a single scene as you please. Dynamically lighting a scene with a lot of assets would prove to be slow, so everytime a new asset is added, lighting is recaculated and stored as static lighting data.

This means you cannot do things like day/night cycles, as that would require several sets of megatextures, increasing the size and process work by a factor; not to mention how much swapping would be required in order to transition to the next megatexture.

What's the difference between the community manager tweeting this info, or posting this info on their site or forum?    To me the only difference is posting it in the Bethesda's forums will take longer to get out in the wild.   Plus this is what twitter was built for, a public place where super fans follow and the user post little updates about their projects, then those updates trickle down to other fans.   This is interesting and creditable news that I am glad they posted.

As long as they still allow mods and the community to fix the problems that they refuse to, I'll be happy. Seriously, the PC version of Oblivion was fine after you got the fan patches from the wiki. That said, I'm super hyped for a new Elder Scrolls game. It has been far too long since my last 200 hour playthrough of Oblivion.

If it's tweets involving how a Bethesda employee shaved his moustache.. then yeah, I agree, there's no reason to cover them.  Even if it was discussing something trivial.. like the different colour of horses that will be available I could maybe see your point.  But when they're announcing new information about the core gameplay mechanics, or in this case how the game will be running on a totally new engine, why wouldn't it be covered?

It doesn't matter if this is coming from Twitter, Fox News or a gaming event, it is big news that a lot of people have been worried about.

The old engine was capable of some pretty amazing graphics. Oblivion still compares well to the latest games. All they really needed to improve on is the crazy load times it would randomly choke on. And the crazy random AI.

Hopefully a new engine will also lead to a better (as in more fun) combat system. That's always been my biggest complaint about Bethesda games.

Just thought I'd share this since we're talking about a new engine. Eurogamer is reporting that this is quite possibly still Gamebryo just heavily modified to the point where they are calling it a new engine. There seems to be conflicting information out there. I guess we'll have to wait and see gameplay. The article links out to an interview they did in August with the executive producer (Todd Howard) where it was stated "Howard wouldn't be drawn on many details about the game - thought to be a new Elder Scrolls title - but said the technology was derived from the engine that powered Fallout 3, albeit with significant modifications. "  If that's true, it seems unlikely that it's a new engine since the game has surely been in development for years already.
