The Grand Theft Auto V Trailer: What Did You Think?

We're returning to the sunny, seedy shores of Los Santos. How's that grab ya?

Well, there you have it, folks. GTA V exists. It's a real thing, and it's set in Los Angeles. Er, Los Santos. Whatevs. What do we know following this trailer? Well, for one thing, we know our as-yet-unnamed protagonist is a "family man," of sorts. His expository narration tells us a good bit--namely, that he's certainly of the criminal ilk we're accustomed to in this series, and that despite his best efforts to settle down in Los Santos and live a normal life, that probably isn't going to happen.

Much speculation was put forth early on about the monetary qualities of the game's logo, what with the whole green "V" and dollar-oriented font on the "five." That obviously led to quite a bit of discussion regarding whether or not Rockstar would be tackling some of the more salient topics of our time, namely the financial crisis and Occupy Wall Street movement. While nothing so overt was shown in the trailer, we get plenty of glimpses of impoverished, homeless folk meandering about the street. Not to mention the crop-duster gassing of migrant workers...

Some are undoubtedly rolling their eyes at yet another game set in an already explored locale, though it's tough to hate too much, considering Los Santos (as well as the other areas of GTA: San Andreas) was such a blast to explore. Rockstar has clearly beefed up the Rage engine here, as the visuals are quite striking. How about those mountains, eh?

The setting does, of course, beg the question as to whether we'll be expanding beyond the scope of Los Santos, perhaps into San Fierro and Las Venturas, like in the original San Andreas-set title. Hell, there are dozens of things left hanging at this point, though I will say I was surprised how much Rockstar actually showed in this first trailer. It's a good glimpse at the world, the protagonist (at least, the one we know about), and the style the game will be affecting. Personally, I can't wait for more.

Gonna keep this post available for the other editors to share their thoughts, should they feel the need to do so. Otherwise, comment away, and let us know what you think of Rockstar's direction for GTA V.

Exactly! That's what I've been trying to tell people. The Mountain is clearly Mount Chilliad in the background with the hikers, the countryside and everything.

"Real life Los Angeles"? I don't think so... The place names I saw were: Vinewood, Los Santos, Little Seoul and Los Puerta Freeway. So this is San Andreas without the yellowness. Also of note: the cars have real licence plates, humorous GTA in-brands will be back (namely "e-cola"), so the humour isn't gone either.

I'm sure I will play it and it will be great but I was really hoping for a female "protagonist" this time around. It seemed like a natural evolution of the game.

Are you saying females are more evolved than males?

I liked it.

Wished they showed more (something that would confirm the multiple player characters in the base game for instance), but it did everything I expected it would, and surprised me with how good the lighting was, and how impactful the poverty in the city visuals would be!

Plus GTA:SA was the most sandbox, and after IV's far more story driven direction, seeing that it's set in that much larger space makes me hopeful for more of the "game" type experience that was GTA:SA

Looking forward to the next 3 trailers for sure! :D

This trailer just effectively killed any interest I have in picking this up. Back to San Andreas? Los Santos? San Fierro? Whatever. I was hoping for something greatly different and this is not it. I am sure they will still sell millions of copies, but this is a disappointment.

Actually it technically looks very similar to GTA4 and RDR. So this is probably just a little more advanced version of the engine they used for those games.

the graphics look fine whats your problem? you overhyped it in your own head thats not rockstars fault looks like a back to grass routes "fun" GTA game rather than the seriousness of 4 could be good shall have to see

If they had a developers build of the next Xbox it would have looked phenomenal rather than marginally better. Also I'm with Jeff, they really need to stick to the realism simply because they do it so well, and Saints Row has basically cornered the market on craziness. All they would be doing is putting themselves in a weird middle ground where they don't really satisfy anyone.

hmmm. from the looks it could just be a really big expansion for gta 4. doesn't look super new or innovative. it's exactly what i expected rockstar to do and i'm fine with it. will not have the same impact as gta 4 though. probably just like the guys said on the bombcast with uncharted 3: it's just like the game before. still good but nothing too crazy.

@TheKing: You don't have to be 12 to prefer a high action film over more meaningful action drama. That said, I think this and Saints Row 3 will have a place on my shelf, and I will enjoy both for very different reasons! And lets be clear, NEITHER one will be able to be played in front of the wife.

Honestly I was never that excited for this trailer, rockstar's first trailers for GTA games never seem to give too much away apart from a location and a tiny bit about the main character, if you were expecting much more than it's your own fault if it disappointed you.

I hope they do some videos like they did for LA Noire and RDR and explain some of the new mechanics they've introduced in this one, I'm interested to see what they've changed.

IGN is analyzing the trailer live right now.  The hypothesis is that it's Tommy Vercetti in the trailer.  They think that because it sounds like Ray Liotta announcing the trailer.  Plus the old guy in the trailer is wearing the same suit colors as Tommy.

Looks dull. At least we have Saints Row the Third.

Apparently, Rockstar thinks they can still sell a game on boring-ass exposition and continue to show nothing. Saints Row: The Third Teaser > > > > > GTAV Teaser.

You know its great that Saints Row picked up where GTA San Andreas left off when GTA went more gritty and realistic because now we have the best of both world. But hey, its cool to dismiss one because its not like the other i guess.

@PirateNeal: There were 2 expansions...Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and Damned. Sure they weren't full on new areas but R* followed their 2 sub-sequels or expansions path that GTA3 had. Niko made cameos in those just like Claude made cameos in San Andreas.

I trust Rockstar to put in the usual excellent work they do developing characters, between GTA4 and RDR they really are out on their own with open world storytelling. San Andreas was as much about portraying 90's hip hop culture as it was about California and this looks more like a fresh modern take on Cali.
