The Infinite Lives of Metal Slug

Rocket Laouncher!

As the owner of multiple Metal Slug arcade cartridges, I feel comfortable saying that I'm a pretty big fan of SNK's tongue-in-cheek side-scrolling shooter, yet I find the fact that they continue producing new iterations of this series totally inexplicable. The classic arcade games that were the original target of Metal Slug's satire have long since fallen by the wayside, and yet SNK continues to crank out these goofy 2D titles like it was 1996. When the parody outlives the source material, does that just make it the new status quo? Is there someone out there working on a Metal Slug parody?

My freshman philosophy aside, the veejays over at MTV Multiplayer have some exclusive screenshots of Metal Slug 7 for the Nintendo DS. As much as I love me some Metal Slug, it's being developed by Ignition Entertainment, which has been handling the Metal Slug series since it started getting kinda bland, so I'm doing my best to manage expectations.

Another Metal slug.. Wow. Really wont be picking this up. as Zuul says I have played so many different games on numerous consoles and they now seem to be repeating the same old stuff, let it die and go down in gaming history.

Then leave it there.. Forever..

Won't say I'm excited by this but I will keep a watchful eye on it, in the hope that one day it will be great again.

I'm really quite happy with my $20 Metal Slug anthology, which gives me 7 games for less than half the price of this one on NCS, and probably half the price of this when it sees a US release.  Also, I'm not the hugest fan of run & guns on DS.  I like Contra 4 enough, but I'm more likely to fire up my NES or SNES than my DS when I want a Contra fix.

I played the Japanese version for a bit. It's Metal Slug all right. Hard as hell.

It's not a Metal Slug parody, but the recently released Commando: Steel Disaster for the DS is a hilariously blatant Metal Slug rip-off. Oh, and it's stoopid hard.
