The John Carpenter (Email) Interview

One of horror's most treasured directors took a few minutes to answer some questions. Wait, what?

If you happen to follow film director John Carpenter on Twitter (@TheHorrorMaster), you know the man responsible for The Thing, They Live, Halloween and countless other classics is also a big game player.

We’re not even talking exclusively horror, either. I mean, look at this:

After seeing Carpenter's tweet about Rayman Legends, it seemed worth a shot to get in touch. Just shouting over Twitter didn’t seem like a productive way of communicating, so a little Internet sleuthing lead me to www.theofficialjohncarpenter.com. It’s a website that doesn’t appear to have been touched in a long time.

If you've never seen The Thing, change that immediately. But don't be tempted to watch the awful, insulting remake/prequel.
If you've never seen The Thing, change that immediately. But don't be tempted to watch the awful, insulting remake/prequel.

Hidden within the site, though, was a link to a “webmaster.” I didn’t know websites in 2013 still had webmasters, and so I figured whatever email this was connected to would bounce back immediately. But, no, it didn’t. In reality, a few days later, I was asked to send over five questions for Carpenter.

How could I say no?

I didn’t, of course. And while Carpenter's answers are short, it’s a dream to say I’m running an interview, however brief, with the man responsible for some of my favorite cinematic horrors over the years.

This is crazy, you guys.

Giant Bomb: You talk about video games on your Twitter account all the time. Have you always been interested in video games? What are some of your favorites?

John Carpenter: My son got me interested in console video games. The first game I remember playing obsessively was Sonic the Hedgehog. Man it was hard; no checkpoints. I kept dying over and over again. Hand-eye coordination was impaired at the time. Over the years I've improved. I have many favorite games. Borderlands 2 is spectacular. I love BioShock, the Dead Space series, The Last of Us...

GB: When playing a horror video game, do you find yourself trying to deconstruct how it works? Which games have been the most effective at scaring you?

Carpenter: I enjoy the Silent Hill series. And no, I don't think about the mechanics of horror games. I just immerse myself.

GB: Having briefly dabbled in making video games with F.E.A.R. 3, have you given any thought to making your own horror video game eventually?

Carpenter: I'd love to work on an original video game. Maybe the opportunity will present itself.

GB: Do you think modern horror movies have anything to learn from horror video games? What about the other way around?

Carpenter: Video games and movies are different art forms. They share details in common, but not necessarily structure.

GB: The Thing was adapted into a pretty great video game. Have you played that one, and do you think any of your other films might have worked, too?

Carpenter: I am a character in The Thing video game. Unfortunately, I die. I think Big Trouble in Little China would make a great game.

GB: Thanks for your time.

His dvd commentaries with Kurt Russell are some of the best I've ever heard.

Yeah, definitely. I forget whether it was on Big Trouble or The Thing, but I remember on one of them they entirely forget they're recording a commentary and start asking each other how their children are doing, until after about ten minutes of that they kind of go "Oh shit, we're supposed to be talking about the movie!" So endearing.

Albeit a short interview, I'm also a fan of Carpenter, so I can only imagine how surreal and wonderful Patrick must have felt after accomplishing this.

Wait, there is a The Thing video game?!

Yup, it's certainly not flawless, but I'm happy to see that plenty of other people seem to have enjoyed it, just as I did. Seems like lots of people are shitting on it nowadays. It was released for Xbox, PS2 and PC back in 2002.

I remember really liking it, but was disappointed to find that a lot of the moments when your squad members would turn into a Thing was scripted. Especially considering how much the game talked up the 'chance' of your squad members getting infected, how to search for signs, and how best to deal with them.

Yeah, that was disappointing, though not something you'd generally notice on your first playthrough, despite that I really liked it.

Whoa, god, no, The Thing was NOT a good game.

You MUST be out of your mind. That game was fantastic. Adaptive AI among your squad members, atmospheric as hell, and the whole story in general was well-played against what the Carpenter movie was.

Was it clunky in terms of controls? Sure, most shit around that time was. Nonetheless, I just don't know how anyone thought that was a BAD game.

Oh well. To each their own.

@mintyice: They sourced it- it's quite common in video game journalism to source a story and add a little to nothing to it and only Giantbomb doesn't do it really (unless its big news and even then they try to get more info about stuff and have more Giantbomb oriented editorializing).

You can tell the age range of GB when I seem to be the only person who remembers the Big Trouble in Little China video game. And played it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Trouble_in_Little_China_%28video_game%29

Carpenter has lost credibility over the years thanks to a string of repetitive movies with the same basic idea and then selling out all his IPs to be remade as shitty modern versions for no reason.

Anyway, awesome to know one of my favourite directors is a fan of Sonic and Borderlands.

Good get, Klepek. I would not have pegged Carpenter for a gamer, but goddammit if the games her mentions aren't the ones you'd think he'd enjoy anyway! I wonder if he's played Amnesia...

Co-op campaign multiplayer Big Trouble in Little China, one person plays as Jack, the other plays as Wang.

To be accurate to the film, Jack would be a pretty terrible shot and be awful at fighting, while Wang gets some Ninja Gaiden-style kung fu.

It's all in the reflexes.

I want to be Egg, dude! it would have to be a beat-em-up or something.

Did you guys know carpenter is interested in making a dead space film?

Also, carpenter is a national treasure; he was the master of taking B movie concepts and turning them into great films. I know, he hasnt been at top form in a long time, but he's also the dude who directed Halloween, The Thing, Escape From NY (my personal favorite of his), Big Trouble in Little China, They Live. Such a weird, yet awesome filmography that dude has.

Also http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/news/a522011/the-thing-john-carpenter-open-to-making-original-video-game.html

Im gonna keep an eye on google news to see how many other articles come from this one :)

And The Ward.... Ghosts of Mars, Vampires, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Escape from L.A. Not to rain on the Carpenter parade. But he can be as bad as he can be good, and I suppose the same could be said of most directors. But I just recently watched The Ward, and it's made me a little bitter about the man. It really doesn't get much worse then The Ward, even ghosts of mars is enjoyably terrible. The Ward just feels like a limp nothing of a movie that is basically just a cash in on the his name sake. I guess I can celebrate his past works. But I really have no interest in anything the man touches in the future.

Huh, I always thought that Carpenter was responsible for directing the trailer to F.E.A.R. 3, didn't know that he had a hand in making the cutscenes as well.

The Thing is still one of the most creepiest movies I've ever seen. Apart from that I think his music is my favourite thing he's created.
