The Last Guardian Officially "On Hiatus" UPDATE: Or Not

Jack Tretton isn't only dropping good bombs this E3.

Four years after its announcement at E3 2009, it doesn't look like we're any closer to a release date for The Last Guardian, Team Ico's long-in-gestation followup to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Although it appeared on the official E3 website last week, Sony apparently never had any plans to show it off this week. How do we know? Well, Sony executive Jack Tretton has gone on record as saying that the game is officially "on hiatus" during an appearance on Spike TV.

Not much more information than this, unfortunately, but feel free to speculate. Is The Last Guardian going to be retooled for Playstation 4? Is Team Ico working on something else? What the heck is this game all about, anyway? It might be a while before we get any answers to these questions.

UPDATE: According to Stephen Totilo over at Kotaku, the above info is some kind of Sony miscommunication. Says Sony's head of worldwide studios:

"That hiatus term—I’m not a native English-speaking person—but that’s misleading," Yoshida told me a few minutes ago during an interview here at E3. He'd watched Tretton's comments on Spike.com while eating lunch. "The game is in active development. [Lead designer Fumito] Ueda-san shared updates a few months ago. Nothing has changed. My answer is, 'Yes, the game is in active development.' It’s not hiatus at all. But we are not ready to reintroduce it. When we are ready, we will do that. Please wait."

THis is the most depressing news of the show for me. So bummed about this. My most looked forward game of the last 5 years.

Get on it, Gearbox.

Well duh.

I figured if it wasn't their "Oh, one more thing..." thing last night, it had to be DOA. I guess I was pretty much right. I wonder why this one is such a problem to get out the door. AFAIK that doesn't happen to Japanese games nearly as much as Western games, perhaps because the developer/publisher relationship over there is so different, especially these days.

Get on it, Gearbox.

I probably laughed more than I should've at this one.

I'm kinda glad that at least Sony acknowledged this game exists again.

Wish they would've just sucked it up and made a SotC 2. I know that isn't the artistic move, but damn it it's better than nothing.

Posted by Cyrisaurus

Good on them for being honest about it, and at least it's not canceled. I'm sure the transition of this game from PS3 to PS4 is taking a lot of work. I wouldn't be surprised if it's being completely remade from the ground up.

Hell no! Get out of here.

Hey look, Mom! It's Japanese Duke Nukem!

Posted by metalsnakezero

@snail: Just about to say that but yeah it better to hear it still around than no longer working on it. Just want to play it god damn it.

So why can't game journalists find things out like real journalists. If this was a journalist covering a movie they would have contacted Team Ico or Sony for further comments but so many of these articles seem to be: So this guy said this, so were going to tell you verbatim. Have a nice day". I mean come on, fans have inferred that this was going nowhere for the past three years.

Posted by ezdude

Well, no shit.

Edited by Rorie

@thanatos3: Speaking only for myself, I don't have any contacts at Sony or Team Ico, and I'm not at E3. I'm sure there are people trying to follow-up on this stuff as we speak.

I get the impression that this game was significantly under-designed and never much more than a tech demo to show off that the PS3 was getting something from the creators of Ico and SOTC.

I really wanted it to be real though.

If ICO is anything to go by, we'll see The Last Guardian in PS4's twilight years.

giant dog/bird bummer

Edited by MoonwalkSA

Hopefully this means that Team Ico is working on something new, at least.

Team ico have to be one of the least productive studios ever, 2 games in 12 years. I sure loved shadow of colossus though.

I'm not even sure what the big deal is, I mean yes Ico and SOTC were great, but we don't even really know what this is yet.

Posted by JackSukeru

Team Ico truly taking the "less is more" approach to the next level!

This doesn't happen a lot with me but I have actually completely stopped caring about this game and whether it comes out or not.

I don't caaaaaare! I never cared! Am I a monster?

As long as we get it in the end... oh please, don't let it die!

Damn, this is the only reason I wanted a PS3. Finally got one for Ni no Kuni though.

...aaaaand Sony E3 good will is gone.

Edited by elitefury

Team Ico has made two of the most unique and enjoyable experiences in gaming during the playstation 2 years... Wait! It's been that long since they released a game. No wonder we keep seeing different twist on shooters instead of more innovation.

How the fuck do you not finish this game?

I don't understand. Cute little kid, plus giant cute bird-dog-cat-griffin, plus some fuckin' platforming or whatever, and you're done!

How has this managed to become the Gran Turismo 5 of pretentiousness???

HOW

So, I know people like to be hyped for things forever, but here's my thing: If a game isn't coming out within a 2 year time period of when its first announced or talked about I cannot care. There are too many games coming out all the time for me to get excited about things that have no prospect of being a fully realized thing in the near future.

Edited by THRICE_604

Just cancel it and move on to a new project. There needs to be a point where you cut your losses and stop messing around. Nothing that falls into this kind of development ever turns out well. No one will be happy it just becomes a quagmire at some point.

If they don't think the game is good enough I'd rather they don't release it.

This is a bummer.

Moving The Last Guardian to the PS4 would be a large undertaking. I hope Team Ico has a place for the mythology and characters they already created. I'm hoping the "hiatus" is only to make the redesigned-for-PS4 announcement that much better.

Posted by TheManWithNoPlan

That's really a bummer, but I can't say I didn't expect it.

I don't even care about the property itself, I just think this studio is awesome and I wish I could see them release a new game, and it's a damn shame that they are not.
