BREAKING: Is Giant Bomb's New News Editor Starting Tomorrow?

With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
I'm pleased to announce that as of Monday, seasoned newsman and all-around good guy Patrick Klepek will be joining the Giant Bomb team as News Editor. We've all thought long and hard about how best to expand our focus and provide higher-quality content for you, and adding Patrick to the team will bring exactly that. In addition to bringing his expertise to our current news output, one of the things Patrick will be focusing on is honest-to-goodness original reporting, ensuring that there are even more things on Giant Bomb that you can't find anywhere else.

Why news? Why now? Well, I should probably back up a bit.

Right around the time we started Giant Bomb back in 2008, I grabbed myself an RSS reader and subscribed to almost every single full-text gaming news RSS I could find with the idea that if we were going to start a site with no dedicated news person, I was going to need to be up on what's happening out there in the world. While we focused primarily on covering the games themselves, we'd dabble in news here and there, reporting things when they came our way and, more often than not, linking out to sites that were doing the legwork that we weren't. Beyond positioning some rugged soldiers like Brad Nicholson in direct path of the press release hose, It felt like it would be crazy to get into news. Other people--like Patrick, for example--had that buttoned up.

These days, I almost wonder if everyone decided that there's no money in news reporting or something. The sites that were fully devoted to it seem a little less focused these days. Some of them broke out and got into other types of content at their news team's expense. Others branched out into so much off-topic coverage that I had to cull them from my RSS feed. Still others straight-up vanished. Point being, I'm not getting as much news from the news sites as I used to, but the post count from these sites just seems to go higher and higher. I'm left with way too much digging to get to the important stuff from the authors that matter.

Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
So I've decided to, in my own way, do something about it. We've all known Patrick for awhile and have crazy respect for the work he's done. Everyone's pretty excited about having him here. We've been tossing around names for potential news candidates for what feels like a year now, but none of them felt quite right. Once we began talking to Patrick about coming over here, it didn't take long for all of those other names to sort of fall by the wayside. He'll be working directly out of our office and we'll all be thinking about presenting you with the most important game news out there with the level of insight and experience that you've come to expect from us.

And we'll probably manage to have a good time while we're at it. That, after all, tends to be our way.

But enough about that. What I want from you right now is two things! First, join me in welcoming Patrick to Giant Bomb. Second, I think we all have some ideas about what an ideal news organization should look like these days, but I want to know what you think about it. How do you want your news delivered? Is text the thing? Should we develop some kind of weekly news wrap-up show? Call-ins? A daily podcast where the day's headlines are delivered directly to your earholes? Should we beam our news stories into space so that aliens can know about updated release dates and the reasons behind their favorite studio's layoffs? Should we rope Patrick into some kind of heinous Tested live show segment where he's blindfolded and eating some kind of awful "food" during his first week here? Like I said, let me know.

This is exciting news! I used to listen to Patrick on the feedback over at G4 and was bummed out he left. Now to hear that he is joining Giantbomb has given me chills. This is great! Welcome Patrick.

I think text for the bulk of news stories would work best, I would rather get the news immediately than wait for a video. But the larger stories with deeper implications I think would warrant a video round table of sorts. Get available staffers to sit in on and discuss the implications of the story and the subtext of it and it's ripple affect in the industry.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't listen to a daily news podcast. Just do a Patrick Centered segment on the Bombcast.
Congratulations to Patrick though, and good luck.

I agree! Lets strap it on.

Welcome Patrick

You were awesome in your 1UP days, your G4 days, and now I cannot wait for your Giant Bomb days.
BEST NEWS EVER!

Excellent. This should be much better then the usual cut and paste news stories we usually get.

I personally like news in the form of written articles for quick and easy access. But I think a wrap up, maybe a video of what happened this week, would also be a great addition for those who dont get to visit the site everyday to see the new news.

Welcome Patrick I like news in text format it's great seeing giant bomb expand! Great work guys

I remember when you were starting out (it was the launch-day podcast, I believe), you guys said you weren't going to be in the news "business" instead focusing on reviews, and only doing news that was exceedingly important to the industry. I guess in the last three years you have begun to think otherwise. Welcome aboard PKlep - do GB proud.

As for the format, any kind of video or podcast seems way too "Internet 2.0"-ey. It might be a good venue, but other people have beat those formats into the fucking ground (for news, at least). However, I'm sure you guys can turn anything to gold.

So, is Patrice, er, Patrick, your ONLY dedicated news guy? 'Cause that's what it sounds like.

daily news  round up in video form, short and sweet, under two minutes would be nice

haha completely forgot about that

First off, a big congrats to Patrick!

I've been familiar with his work through 1up, MTV, G4, EGM, and now at GB. He can only make this site better.

And as far as an ideal format, I'd say (like everyone else) have regular news text articles, and a weekly wrap up video show.
Posted by Insectecutor

A news wrap-up show would only be good if there was something more meaty than just a dude in front of a screenshot to show.

I would really value news that goes deeper than the superficial regurgitation of PR or rumours that I see pretty much everywhere online. The SF bay area seems to be a gaming melting pot, but it's amazing how little effort the journalists who work there expend actually talking to real people, gathering views, seeking the stories behind the news.

A show that ran down the headlines then tackled one interesting story or facet of the industry/community would be unique in games.

Oh hey, I like Patrick!

More text content is nice. I think a daily news podcast would kind of tread on the same ground that the news segment of the Bombcast hits on, but I think there's a way you could have some kind of a weekly news wrapup in text format, just covering the bigger topics of the week, in case anything was missed.

Welcome Patrick!

Personally, I enjoy text articles with screenshots more than video, because they are easier to digest.  Video format would be okay, but please not another podcast.  The two podcasts you guys have now are fantastic, but I don't have time for a third.

Wow, so this is going to be super late and I am sure a lot of people said this already but I'm a big fan of Patrick Klepek and his work. He seems like one of the few real "journalist" in gaming. I always said the one thing Giant Bomb needed was more timely news, with that being said I totally agree that a lot of gaming news sites have really gotten bogged down with other, off topic stuff, so much that getting real gaming news is getting harder and harder.

Seriously GB, this was a great choice and also very much what GB needed to keep going as the best gaming site on the internet.

I would love a daily news podcast.   Certainly nothing as long as the Bombcast.  Maybe 45 minutes max.  It should be a 2 chair deal featuring Patrick plus one more member of the Giant Bomb/Whiskey Team.  Welcome, Patrick.

I've been a like time fan of Patrick Klepek and think it is awesome he is joining the Bomb crew. Looking forward to some great in depth news stories and investigative journalism.

Y'know, i get my news from text, it's all i need, so, i say stick to what it is now.

Probably about 750 comments too late, but this is ace.  Thanks Jeff et al and welcome Patrick.

I have missed the written 'news + commentary' content that the site used to have a stack of when it started, to the point where I barely even look at the front page anymore because I know it's just going to be paraphrased press releases.  It does start to look a bit shilly tbh.  The written Q&As New Brad did for more obscure games were good.

I don't know if daily podcasts are necessary (quality over quantity and all that), but gut reactions from the crew when something interesting comes up would be kinda neat.  Those short ~15 minute videos where you guys are just discussing some topic or other in the office are interesting... something like that.  Like a Quick Look but for a news item.

Actual journalism will be welcome in whatever form it takes.

I think 'Off My Mind' for games would be cool too, but probably not something for the news guy.

Will Patrick's initiation/hazing into the Whiskey Media family be livestreamed?

Posted by GaZZuM

Text and images is fine, but have a seperate news ticker / news page to the front page. I don;t want the front page to get clogged up with news, I want the front page to be for the highlights. I.E. the bigger news stories of the day, new quick looks, announcements etc.

Welcome Pat!

I think maybe having a video wrap up would be cool.

QHAT! WOW! THAT'S GREAT NEWS!!!!

Posted by NDN_Shadow

I remember Patrick back from 1UP. He's been everywhere now hasn't he? 1UP? G4? MTV Games? EGM?

Good to hear he's joining the Giant Bomb crew. Is Brad (Nicholson) no longer going to be writing articles? I enjoy his writing on here and Touch Arcade.

Posted by StriderNo9

Oh and as for my opinion on news, whatever works, I really would love to see updates to the site done on a regular basis, regarding news.

Welcome Sir!

Congrats, a great addition to GB and WM!

Wow a permanent addition to the GiantBomb team! I never though I'd see the day. First off, awesome.

A weekly wrap up show can be interesting, sort of like how Comicvine is doing it right now. Another podcast would be overkill, obviously you guys can just beef up the news segment on the podcast now.

This is probably an annoying and obvious answer, but I'm going to say it: you probably want to be doing something that no one else is doing. That means sitting in a conference room and just brainstorm ideas, which you probably have done, or are doing now or soon.

Maybe it's something like, linking it back to the database you guys have built. As in the layout and delivery of the news is focused on emphasizing the background of the subject through your database for people who don't understand the premise. In this way, when people read the news they will feel compelled to dig through the many pages on Giantbomb that pertain to the subject, sort of like how you get lost in Wikipedia pages as you keep clicking links to learn more.

This should probably lead to a revamped design layout for the news section on the website too, I think.

Anyways, that's just me brainstorming.

Fantastic addition to the team.  I've been getting frustrated lately trying to get a decent source of  news updates.  I'd love a dedicated news RSS feed, but the podcast thing... 5 minutes of headlines with a Giant Bomb personality every day would finally give my ears a purpose.

@Jimbo:
I read ACTION journalism instead of "actual journalism" which would be awesome as well!

ACTION JOURNALISM
Posted by vietthreat

Welcome Patrick,

i would like there to be more video news than text news because i think thats what makes Giantbomb stand out more than other sites because i feel like i know the editors way more visually and personally through videos and the bombcast.
Posted by leftzero101

This is great news!!!!

Posted by badmoney

this is crazy awesome good news about the news

Patrick Klepek is a super awesome guy.
Hope he will be on the Bombcast!
No ideas about how best to deliver the news...yet.
Posted by Nunchuckles

Nice, truth be told, the main thing that I want from a gaming site is mainly news.

Posted by Curufinwe

Put  Patrick on the NDX with Jeff.

Edtorials, opinion pieces, truly original content.

I'm probably a bit late, but Good Luck Have Batman.

Welcome Patrick!

My one request: Please do not report every fucking rumor available.  That is all, thank you.

The idea of a daily podcast.....

Great, now I need to change my pants.

Edited by Insectecutor
@StriderNo9:  I disagree, GB doesn't need more timely news. This obsession with speed is what's driven every other gaming news site into the gutter and I don't think GB could match the likes of Kotaku in timeliness anyway. People can get the headlines from anywhere, GB needs to differentiate itself from that as @Jimbo said.

If GB could break stories that'd be amazing, but in general GB needs to bring its reputation for personality into news reporting, involve the community more, and go deep on interesting stories with interviews and commentary. That seems to be exactly what Patrick Klepek is good at.

I like to hear about news as it happens so maybe a twice a week little video or something?  Welcome to the best web group in the universe.

Does this mean my Whiskey Media members shirt is now OOD? Needs another rollercoaster car!

Posted by 234r2we232

Because random news articles are exactly what this site was missing

Posted by DrRandle

He's good people. Welcome home, Patrick.

Posted by rahulricky

Hey Patrick, if you've made it this far in the reading I'm impressed. I'd add to the calls for more feature type articles. Breaking news can be interesting but most stories aren't that time sensitive.

Posted by UnreliableNarrator

Patrick should eat the raw bacon that the Tested guys "prepared."

Posted by Zor

Hi Patrick.

Anywho, i think it would be best to deliver news in a few different ways. For the most part, Text/image posting of news will work to get information out. Other than that, a weekly video (or text/image if video is too demanding) report of the big stories for the week, will help keep people (who don't have a lot of time) informed.
Posted by nichtnicht

oh yeah

Posted by bigsmoke77

I really like Patrick's energy and will most likely fit in with the Giantbomb crew and the whole whiskey media posse. In regards to content I think there should be a section for all news ( not to spam front page and any major or interesting news should be posted the main page. A daily new video is kinda a waste of time and resources in my opinion.  IGN daily fix is kinda dumb because you most likey aleardy heard of the major news and there is once and a while something interesting the come up with. I think a wrap up weekly news media that gives updates and has  more discussion around the effect of the news stories, would work best: however the best time to launch  the video would Saturday morning. It would take propapbly take to much time to shoot it and get it edited before the day is done and WMH starts.

Posted by Neonie

A new wrap up video or any kind of news video would be awesome. I really view Giant Bomb personally as a video site, and feel like it would fit into the way you guys do things.
