BREAKING: Is Giant Bomb's New News Editor Starting Tomorrow?

With this important change in place, Brad will finally get to focus on his seafaring video games round-up while Jeff will... also wear a hat.
I'm pleased to announce that as of Monday, seasoned newsman and all-around good guy Patrick Klepek will be joining the Giant Bomb team as News Editor. We've all thought long and hard about how best to expand our focus and provide higher-quality content for you, and adding Patrick to the team will bring exactly that. In addition to bringing his expertise to our current news output, one of the things Patrick will be focusing on is honest-to-goodness original reporting, ensuring that there are even more things on Giant Bomb that you can't find anywhere else.

Why news? Why now? Well, I should probably back up a bit.

Right around the time we started Giant Bomb back in 2008, I grabbed myself an RSS reader and subscribed to almost every single full-text gaming news RSS I could find with the idea that if we were going to start a site with no dedicated news person, I was going to need to be up on what's happening out there in the world. While we focused primarily on covering the games themselves, we'd dabble in news here and there, reporting things when they came our way and, more often than not, linking out to sites that were doing the legwork that we weren't. Beyond positioning some rugged soldiers like Brad Nicholson in direct path of the press release hose, It felt like it would be crazy to get into news. Other people--like Patrick, for example--had that buttoned up.

These days, I almost wonder if everyone decided that there's no money in news reporting or something. The sites that were fully devoted to it seem a little less focused these days. Some of them broke out and got into other types of content at their news team's expense. Others branched out into so much off-topic coverage that I had to cull them from my RSS feed. Still others straight-up vanished. Point being, I'm not getting as much news from the news sites as I used to, but the post count from these sites just seems to go higher and higher. I'm left with way too much digging to get to the important stuff from the authors that matter.

Actually, this addition also grants me more time to focus on reviews. Touchdown from all angles.
So I've decided to, in my own way, do something about it. We've all known Patrick for awhile and have crazy respect for the work he's done. Everyone's pretty excited about having him here. We've been tossing around names for potential news candidates for what feels like a year now, but none of them felt quite right. Once we began talking to Patrick about coming over here, it didn't take long for all of those other names to sort of fall by the wayside. He'll be working directly out of our office and we'll all be thinking about presenting you with the most important game news out there with the level of insight and experience that you've come to expect from us.

And we'll probably manage to have a good time while we're at it. That, after all, tends to be our way.

But enough about that. What I want from you right now is two things! First, join me in welcoming Patrick to Giant Bomb. Second, I think we all have some ideas about what an ideal news organization should look like these days, but I want to know what you think about it. How do you want your news delivered? Is text the thing? Should we develop some kind of weekly news wrap-up show? Call-ins? A daily podcast where the day's headlines are delivered directly to your earholes? Should we beam our news stories into space so that aliens can know about updated release dates and the reasons behind their favorite studio's layoffs? Should we rope Patrick into some kind of heinous Tested live show segment where he's blindfolded and eating some kind of awful "food" during his first week here? Like I said, let me know.

Daily's too often, but I wonder if leveraging the live stuff you guys are getting so good at might be fun to try, with call ins and chat and all that bit.  ...do you have an open day?

Maybe just spin off the news section of the bombcast into its own thing, recorded live for call ins on "tuesday" [monday], ,but then posted separately from the the bombcast rss?  I think i'd be into that, I might even call.

SHIT JUST GOT REALER!!!

A video would be nice. It would be best kept short though imo. Maybe with an accompanying write-up.

personally i'm a fan of text news! yay text!

and I am really glad PK is joining the giant bomb team & agree that he's done some wonderful reporting.  I miss the MTV multiplayer blog, used to love it.

Patrick is an amazing writer with a knack for real journalism and we're lucky he keeps himself in the game industry. This is fantastic news.

I, for one, welcome our new Giant Bomb news editor.  As much as I love the content that Giant Bomb provides, I think that having Patrick on board and working out of the Whiskey offices will be a great benefit.

As for how I'd like my news delivered, I really like reading text news articles (though, preferably without the level of overt snark seen from some other sites I could mention).  I'd also be up for a weekly video recap, though to be honest, I think Giant Bomb has enough video content as it is and could really use more in the way of text coverage to balance it out.

Loved Patrick on G4 and he was great on the GDC podcasts this year.

Posted by Skogen

Please keep the news text only, videos and podcasts only clutter the main page and weaken the brand.

Welcome Patrick I am sure you will love working with these guys and with the great community from Giant Bomb. Hope to see your face soon! Also, I think that a weekley news wrap-up video would be great. It would gather much more attention than simple writen news. It would also be great to have a section from the podcast delivered by patrick himself with more detailed news than the ones we get normally.

Patrick was great when ever he was on the Bombcast so seems good to me.

Welcome to the Bomb Patrick! Hope you can help the site become even more amazing.

Posted by TurboMan

also, for how the news is delivered, can he be forced to walk out on the streets with a hat from the 1920's, and shout the news while selling newspapers?

Posted by AndyPhifer

Congrats and welcome!

I would love a news wrapup - audio or video. My favorite way to get world/national news is by downloading some NPR podcasts at the end of the day to find out what happened. A games version of that would be cool.

Fucking awesome, he was great to listen to on the live streams

Edit: Also, any additional video content is a good thing, that goes for news as well!

Patrick seems like he would be a great fit for this here site from what I remember of him when he was with 1up.

WELCOME HUMAN! O_O

Patrick welcome to the family

Welcome Patrick!  News team assemble!!

First off, welcome Patrick, big fan of your work.  This is awesome news.  Stuff like this is what makes Giant Bomb so much better than other game sites. Can't wait to get Patrick in on the occasional quick look and he'd make a great 5th chair on the bombcast.

As for suggestions, I think Patrick, as one of the best game news dudes out there, would know better than me.  However, some way of audience interaction, like the call in show you suggest, would be great.

Oh hai Kotaku.

On topic though. A daily news wrapup would awesome. Video is why I love GB =D

This news is good news. Welcome Patrick.

Great news! As for my two cents on the format stick with your current text/picture feed for now because I like it and it doesn't get blocked at work.

Awesome news (PUN), seems like he'll be a great addition.  Welcome Patrick!  Edit: Out of the proposed format, videos are best if they can be done in short daily segments, followed by text.

Posted by Warihay

Awesome news! I think a daily news podcast would probably be a little much as the bombcast right now is fine for that. A weekly video wrap up similar to what Sara does on ComicVine would be cool though I think.

Posted by Undeadgeek

This is great news!  I was hoping this would happen sooner or later, Patrick Klepek is a perfect fit for Giantbomb.

Dat new new.

Posted by Siphillis

A daily drop of news, either in audio or video form, would be awesome.  Definitely could free up some time for other segments on the Bombcast, and help distinguish Giant Bomb from other news blogs.

Text? Yes.
Weekly wrap-up show? Sure.

Daily podcast? No way.
Posted by UnrealDP

No way you should do a daily podcast i mean all the new news can be summed up weekly. I think maybe a mixture of as much video content as you can while staying realistic as in if maden is getting new DLC that doesn't really need a video while if a new triple A title gets announced that could be a cool quick video.

Awesome news, welcome for reals Patrick!

Posted by i8Donuts

Welcome Patrick. I will be totally fine with text articles. It will help make the front page look more on top of things. Since he is the news guy it would make sense to include him in the "News Of The World" segment of the Bombcast.

Posted by Guv_Bubbs

Wow that so cool to have Patrick on. I think the idea of a daily short podcast would be cool. The news with quick impressions from him and the rest of the crew. Even him just going around the office with a mic and talking to you guys

This is pretty much the reaction I literally just had upon being told Klepek joined the site.

It's so "too good to be true" I had to come to the site and see for myself cause I thought my boyfriend was making shit up to troll me.

I watched the G4 podcast a couple times and Patrick was the clear standout from that show apart from Adam Sessler. Telling from the GDC podcasts, he seems like he will fit right in.

Awesome news guys! (See what I did there?) Some good old fashioned news reporting is just the thing that Giant Bomb was kind of light on. I'd say a weekly video news wrap-up thing would be cool but, poor Vinny and Drew do so much video content as it is, I'd hate to see that interfere with the already outstanding video content I come to this site for.

Posted by Branthog

No clue who that is, but I don't trust this promise for "higher quality content". I think this is a trap.

Posted by leejunfan83

thats whats up great addition to the team

Posted by Make_Me_Mad

Welcome aboard to Patrick!  Did he already make it through the beat-in?

As far as news goes, I like mine as utilitarian as possible.  The video sounds cool, but I'd like a way to just look at a list of things that happened and know the gist of it in about 25 seconds instead of having to wait for a video to cover them all.

Maybe both, then?

Posted by wefwefasdf

Sounds great to me! :D

Posted by Czarpyotr

Awesome news.  I think that weekly video updates on news could be pretty cool, but I also enjoy the weekly discussions on the bombcast as well.

Posted by MKSKILLZ16

Firstly, what is to happen with Brad N. and Brad S.? Secondly, short/non-earth shattering news should be kept to text on the site, and longer more labour intensive news could be in video form.  As for a podcast type thing, maybe? There is already news in the bombcast so I dunno. I'd probably subscribe to a news podcast (it is free after all) just for a quick listen or to get more in depth/opinions about stuff.

This is great, one of the things I've been slightly missing here is regularly updated news. And while I could see a daily/weekly wrap-up video or podcast to be quite good, I would be just as pleased with just news stories in text, as I have the reading ability unlocked, as it were.

I love Klepek. This is great news.

Posted by SethPhotopoulos

Awesome.

Posted by Hailinel

Also, you should officially induct him into the Whiskey Media family through the forced ingestion of Swedish candy products.

Klepek (and his hair) is great!

Posted by GlenTennis

I can't wait. I would love a video news report of sorts.

Posted by FreakAche

I like podcasts. I don't like unreasonably long videos. Giant Newscast!

Posted by EvilTwin

I like Patrick.

Welcome aboard. :)

Hi Patrick!

I like daily news podcast idea.
Posted by Natedogg2

This is great news. I'm rather excited about this.

I don't know about another podcast about the news. I think just a weekly video wrap-up of the news would work just fine.
