The Mortal Kombat Team Has A New Fighting Game

Superheroes collide in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Those guys across the hall at GameSpot are exclusively reporting that the next game from NetherRealm, the creators of Mortal Kombat, is a 2D fighting game called Injustice: Gods Among Us. The game will feature characters from the DC universe, such as Batman, Flash, Solomon Grundy, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Superman, and more.

Here's the debut trailer, which delivers a whole bunch of CG... and some bits that actually happen during the game, like Superman's super, which cashes in your meter for an atmospheric uppercut.

The game appears to play in the Mortal Kombat style, with plenty of juggles and combos, but will have a different set of controls that are built to take advantage of the game's increased focus on interactive backgrounds. Different characters will interact with different background objects at the touch of a button, allowing "power" type characters like Wonder Woman to pick up a car and throw it while "gadget" type characters like Batman would throw batarangs at the car to make it explode, damaging nearby opponents. Background transitions, some of which seemed similar to those found in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, are also said to be present.

The rest of the Internet will have their own reports on the game tomorrow. But until then, here's more on the game, straight from NetherRealm's own Ed Boon. I totally wasn't standing behind Ryan Mac Donald when he conducted this interview. Wait, can I even say that? Crap.

We'll be seeing more of the game at E3 next week. Injustice: Gods Among Us is due out on 360, PS3, and Wii U in 2013. It'll be T-rated, so don't expect it to have proper fatalities... but does anyone want to start taking bets on whether Scorpion is a pre-order bonus, an unlockable character, or post-release DLC?

A T rating interesting, well I guess DC wouldn't allow their characters to be fatalty'd since I believe this what happened with Mortal Kombat vs DC

There were fatalities in MK v DCU. More than likely, its just about the spectrum of appeal. Moms might buy the new game with Superman in it for a child as young as six. Slap an M rating on there and that's a much tougher sell.

That's a shame, Capcom are the best at these vs. games.

also people complaining about power imbalance...... its a freaking video game MVC has done that for years, the rage mechanic in MK vs DC was sufficient enough mechanic for a videogame to justify the power imbalance. I see something like that happing here

UMvC3 is actually very well balanced with plenty of people getting places with lower tier characters. A guy using Viewtiful Joe/Frank West/Rocket Raccoon won a major tournament not long ago. All of those characters are considered mid-low tier.

MvC2...well yep that game is basically dominated by 6 or so characters.

I just hope this does not play the same as MK vs DC. I was not a fan of the mix of 2D and 3D gameplay.

Im pretty sure they are referring to how strong the characters are in the comics. Like Harley Quinn would never beat Superman, etc.

So this is basically DC Universe Vs Mortal Kombat again, except they're stripping out the MK guys.

Main problem still remains, though: Power imbalance. It's worse in DC than in Marvel simply because their primary characters are so... well, they've got Superman, who can pretty much kill anyone with one arm tied behind his back, Batman, who's just a regular dude, and the Flash, who shouldn't ever even get hit.

Are they going to bring back that stupid "Rage" mechanic that leveled the playing field, allowing Batman to go toe to toe with Superman? I guess they're going to have to at least do something like that. I mean, Harley Quinn vs Wonder Woman? Wonder Woman is bulletproof, and bullets are all harley has. She definitely has no chance putting her in a full nelson or whatever it was she tried in the trailer. She's a pushover even for Batman, all she generally has is thugs and hyenas and I doubt she has that here. Harley vs Superman? That just gets ridiculous at a certain point.

But the DC guys are constantly fighting against each other. Flash can take a hit from Supes without exploding into pieces; Flash has also dodged almost every one of Supes punches in a fight. Batman has his wits, gadgets, and superior fighting skills and knowledge of everyones weaknesses. Harley is insane and unpredictable. I don't think WW is bulletproof, just her bracelets. Yes, DC hero's are imbalanced, but there's at least some credence to them fighting each other since it's been done before in their own fiction.

The lastest MK game was the first fighting game I've ever owned. I hope Injustice can be my second. I like fighting games but it's frigging impossible to get into them without a buttload of dedication.

Well, at least they didn't try to mix Mortal Kombat with DC again.

And after the last Mortal Kombat, i have all the faith in the world in these guys.

Probably won't be getting this game, because i'm not a DC fan, but, it'll probaby be a good game.

And i'm fine with these guys switching between Mortal Kombat and other fighting games.

We don't need a new Mortal Kombat every 1-2 years, give it some time for us to miss it.

I will admit that alot of the fun with MK for me was the gore factor.

I just hope they can make the hits in Injustice have the same impact as the stuff you could do in MK.

Justice league is still the best super hero group and we all know it. Evil Justice league... that's a fighting game I can get behind. But we need Gorilla Grodd, Brainiac, and Joke character Toyman.

I liked the singleplayer aspect of the last MK, but their fighting system isn't my cup of tea(I need my frames yo), still hope it turns out well.

now answer with a non-versus marvel game, capcom!

I don't like how Gamespot does interviews if that's how they do interviews. I feel like there are too many points where Jeff would've laughed if he was conducting the interview where Ryan Mac Donald said nothing and, additionally, I find the way questions have been edited out (presumably) pretty disturbing.

I like an interview where the interviewer acts like a human. I suppose that's why I'm here and not at Gamespot. Game sounds really cool though, can't wait to see more of it including an interview with Jeff and Ed Boon.

@TheMasterDS: Some interviews are different because they are dictated by PR as to what can be mentioned, and what can't. It's not a GameSpot thing, or a Giant Bomb thing, or whatever ... a lot of the time the interviewee rambles along for 20 minutes, and then says "Oh, lets not talk about that just yet."

It's really weird to realize that I'm far more interested in the story of this game than actually playing it. I hope the narrative branches off of the events of MK vs DCU the way MK9 kind of did. I've never been a huge DC fan so I can't think of many characters I might want to see in the roster besides Swamp Thing and The Question. MK9 made me a believer in what Nether Realms can do with fighting games so I am very excited.

Its looks like it could be fairly cool, but man... did they have to go with the "New 52" costumes? They just scream "the 90's" in the very worst way possible. Really the Wonder Woman costume is the only one that is any good at this point.

I mean Superman is wearing armor! What the fuck would Superman need armor for? So bad! I used to like Jim Lee but he has lost more than a little something since his days or redesigning the X-Men back in the day.

Sort of in the middle here with this release, for two simple reasons-Mortal Kombat was awesome. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was not.
This environment stuff sounds interesting, but I am far more interested in what the core gameplay actually is like (oh, and costumes).

I'm digging the return of shifting battlegrounds and the supposed background object interactivity. Probably jack the game up for high-end competitive play, but that does not mean it cannot be extraordinary fun.

@jointron33: In general, though, Marvel succeeds where DC fails in establishing character faults and pathos in a way that makes their characters feel closer to human beings than generally unlikable demigods.
