The Mortal Kombat Team Has A New Fighting Game

Those guys across the hall at GameSpot are exclusively reporting that the next game from NetherRealm, the creators of Mortal Kombat, is a 2D fighting game called Injustice: Gods Among Us. The game will feature characters from the DC universe, such as Batman, Flash, Solomon Grundy, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Superman, and more.

Here's the debut trailer, which delivers a whole bunch of CG... and some bits that actually happen during the game, like Superman's super, which cashes in your meter for an atmospheric uppercut.

The game appears to play in the Mortal Kombat style, with plenty of juggles and combos, but will have a different set of controls that are built to take advantage of the game's increased focus on interactive backgrounds. Different characters will interact with different background objects at the touch of a button, allowing "power" type characters like Wonder Woman to pick up a car and throw it while "gadget" type characters like Batman would throw batarangs at the car to make it explode, damaging nearby opponents. Background transitions, some of which seemed similar to those found in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, are also said to be present.

The rest of the Internet will have their own reports on the game tomorrow. But until then, here's more on the game, straight from NetherRealm's own Ed Boon. I totally wasn't standing behind Ryan Mac Donald when he conducted this interview. Wait, can I even say that? Crap.

We'll be seeing more of the game at E3 next week. Injustice: Gods Among Us is due out on 360, PS3, and Wii U in 2013. It'll be T-rated, so don't expect it to have proper fatalities... but does anyone want to start taking bets on whether Scorpion is a pre-order bonus, an unlockable character, or post-release DLC?

I've got a feeling that you're gonna start nagging Ed Boon about that Scorpion question, next time you see him...

I so desperately wish they had held this back for the press conferences, 'cause I would've LOST MY MIND.

Now, I'm just kinda chill on the whole thing. I'll probably play it, but I can't say I'm especially excited.

I don't want to be one of "those guys" who jumps at a game or whatever right when it's revealed for something that is later proven to be super petty, but man... I don't think I could hate the tone or look of this game anymore than I do. I'm a huge fan of comics, but I am just so sick of the "dark and gritty" thing. It makes more sense when you think of it coming from NetherRealm, but still. Ugh. The body armor costumes are pretty dumb too, but I'm guessing the classic costumes will be available too.

All that said, I still want to hear more about this. I really did like MK9 a lot. Though despite the really impressive story mode, MK vs DC Universe felt really incomplete. Hope this is more like the former rather than the latter. Hoping the roster digs a bit deeper than MK vs DC Universe did, too, which I guess it should since it doesn't have to support both franchises. Power Girl! Static! Robin! Plastic Man! They totally need to be in this.

@Paindamnation: What makes you think there are going to be fatalities? This isn't Mortal Kombat.

This looks pretty fun. My boss speaks highly of MK vs. DC. I'd be willing to check this out, and I trust NetherRealm.

Because Ed Boon loves showy finishers. Finishers would have been the better word for it. However, no blood most likely since it will be rated T for Teen. Hence the nerfed Fatalities or Finishers if you would like. Which most likely would be in the game, not as gruesome obviously though.

Interesting, this certainly has potential. And since this is rated T, the next Mortal Kombat they make will probably end up being even gorier and violent than the last.

Ya' know with all that lust for chaos and gore building up inside them... Only to burst in a fountain of blood and broken bones!

Have to say that I'm glad they haven't just gone and made another Mortal Kombat, give the series a rest and keep people eager. Loved MK though.

Can't say I like the sound of that. Damn near every fighting game that has tried to do something like that hasn't ended up that well. I'd say the Powerstone games are the only exception, and those were more party games than anything else.

Man Ed Boon does not seem as happy in these videos as he did when he was talking about MK last time around... I hope they have not been pushed into this. It just sucks when a CD is not passionate about the product.

Personally as a huge comic book and huge fighting game fan I am confused as to why this doesn't excite me at all.

I'm kinda hoping this plays into the "crisis on two earth's" idea, where its actually owlman and ultraman and the like do all the dirty work.

new IP would be nice but if these guys are making the characters have their own control and not feel like any of the mk characters and everything else with the environment interaction makes sense in 2d i will totally be stoke and happy to play it.

Remember, in order to keep that DC license they probably are required to do something with it on a regular basis ( see: Activision/Spider-Man). Its been four years since MK vs DC.

I'm down. MK9 is one of my favriote games of this generation, but Im also open to some change. I hope they can have the entire justice league show up.

You know what I'd love to see? NO Mortal Kombat cameos or easter eggs whatsoever. But yeah, I kinda doubt that'll happen.

I'm very interested in this. As someone who didn't jump on board the Mortal Kombat bandwagon when it first came out, I feel it's hard to at this point. Seeing a game like this, with characters I actually love, is great timing!

I just really don't like any DC products beyond Batman and Watchmen. Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Superman, freaking yawn.

I like Marvel but they messed up and now their licenses are spread to the winds. And foul winds, like Activision.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised Warner Bros isn't pushing them to make another MK after the success (it was successful, right?) of the most recent game. I'm mildly interested, but I doubt my interest will go much further than that.

I can't wait for this. I wonder if you can use the Mortal Kombat joystick with this game...

To give retailers and journalists a bit of time to spend with the games, not just to say "WE'RE MAKING THIS" and then driving away. The majority of the stuff shown at E3 were announced the year before anyway. The only people getting mad about 'E3 not having enough new announcements' are crazy people.

The Flash in full body armour? Duuuuuude.

Thinking about it, it's probably only a matter of time now before superheroes wearing armour is the standard anyway. Lots of DC characters are in armour now since the New 52 started. Superman's suit in this game is pretty close to his current suit in comics. Down with spandex!
