The Next Unreal Tournament's Starting Development Today

Epic Games is quite literally starting from scratch with its latest competitive shooter.

All hail Facing Worlds!

No Caption Provided

That's all I can think about with the news that Epic Games is making a new Unreal Tournament game. The developer announced it's writing the first lines of code today, and the game's development will be a collaborative process in the coming months (years?).

"The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS," the company said in a blog.

For the moment, it's only being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux.

When it's eventually released, the new Unreal Tournament won't cost anything to play. Epic hopes to make back its money by allowing modders to sell content in a marketplace where the company takes a slice of the profits. It sounds similar to Steam workshop.

The company is going to document the game's development on Twitch, and there's a stream ongoing as this story is being published.

More details on how you can become involved in the development are in this blog post.

But if every mod developer suddenly knows they can easily charge $5 or $10 for their mod, well, I really don't like the sound of that at all.

I don't know if it was your intention, but this sentiment sounds more than a little selfishly exploitative. Almost like something a publisher/developer could traditionally be expected to say about a modding community profiting (god forbid) off their work.

Except:

The entire reason I've tried Source Mods like No More Room in Hell, Fistful of Frags and Neotokyo is because they were free (no offense to mod developers). Look at Dino D-Day, or The Ship! Those are basically paid Source Mods that could've made a splash if they were free.

Yes, it is absolutely great that they want to turn mod development in to a business, but it also means there are going to be a lot more mods that struggle to gain any relevance whatsoever. The highs will be higher, but the lows will also be way, way lower. We are going to see a lot more mods like Dino D-Day and The Ship: cute ideas that shrivel up and die almost immediately because nobody is going to pay even $5 for them.

Meanwhile, Pirates Vikings & Knights has been hangin' on since the HL1 days. It's quirky, weird, and totally nonstandard, but since its free, your only loss for trying it out is the ten minutes it takes to install.

I'd have to be convinced to spend money on something like PVK2. But since its free, well, sure, I'll give it a shot.

But how many people that were once in it to make a small-time, free mod are going to start trying to charge for that kind of content and die on the vine? I'm going to wager a lot.

That's great for the visibility of free mods, but I've heard precious few stories of modders successfully transitioning into full-time game development, whereas something like the Dota 2 marketplace can apparently turn a decent supplemental income for skilled designers.

It's also no longer strictly a case of having to download something and play it on a LAN for six hours before you have the information necessary to form impressions of it. In all likelihood (assuming the game itself performs well) anything worth seeing will have a large amount of "new media" coverage surrounding it before you're even aware of its existence.

PC exclusive UT game? This might actually stand a chance at being good! Fast pace arena shooters are easily my favorite style of multiplayer fps, the last good one of those was the new Rise of the Triad.

My only issue with the announcement is the game quite literally doesn't exist and am sure the game won't be out for another 2+ years. I would just prefer they at least had something to show.

in my mind UT is probably the best competitive shooter to date. At least for my moneys worth. So I am looking forward to this.

Fuck Facing Worlds, give me Morpheus.

Yeah, I'm disappointed everybody just namedrops Facing Worlds. Morpheus was fun, but the best remains Crane and Crane II. I also recall that Assault map with the ship you could dive under being pretty neat.

@fisk0: I remember Facing Worlds for Deathmatches, Convoy for Assaults, and Torlan for Onslaughts.

And while we might only remember a few maps, I think the sheer quantity of maps was a plus for UT. Plenty of variety and a lot of different environments.

In my head i had a checklist of things this would need to be to get me on board the hype train. This announcement ticks every box. Biggest thing is the total lack of consoles being talked about here. This has the capacity to be ridiculously fast and twitchy, the way UT should be. Sign me right up.

Been playing Unreal Tournament games since the very beginning and still play UT3 regularly with the wife and as absolutely stoked I am they are making a brand new UT game, I'm shocked in disappointment that they've gone down the route of making it free, and allowing modders/mappers to sell what they create. I'm not going to spend actual real money for some mods and maps I just wont do it.. This actually alienates all what Epic has stood for over the past 15 years in giving the tools to the community to be able to make something truly awesome and add onto a game to make a really true unique experience.

This will actually mean a lot less content in being made because you have to spend $20 just to even get access to the game engine and then subscription of $20 a month there after if you plan on getting updates for the engine itself which you will need to do as things brake, performance tweaks and what you will be essential to edit inside the engine properly. This could be a good thing, in the way that you will see much more higher quality content being made perhaps, but it takes away the basement high school developer for making mods and maps and what have you, the more casual gamer who likes to mod or create a map every now and then.

The argument would be this could be a way for people to get into the industry, making some really awesome content getting to know the engine and selling it, but this has always been in the Unreal games anyway, with the "Make Something Unreal" $1million contest where the best mappers, designers, modders make into the games industry this way anyway.

It only has been announced at this current time 9 hours ago so its a LONG ways off it hasn't even started yet so we'll have to wait and see what happens, but I am concerned about having to pay for every piece of content that gets created now. The game might be free, but at what cost will I eventually have to pay in order to get the traditional unreal tournament experience in the end? Not going to pay $5 just to simply add a Malcom Character into the game or a $9.99 fee for a community mappack of 4 maps? This could dangerously get out of control quite quickly.

reason why UT3 failed.....They had to add glow onto the overly detailed characters to tell who was on red or blue. I still felt the faint death button was useless in a game where you can have a tank just roll over the body.

Oh man, I'm really happy about this. I just hope it'll be in the style of UT99 and UT3 rather than the vehicle focused UT2k3/4.

UT 2k3 was actually all arena based combat, it didn't have any of the vehicle shenanigans that never did anything for me. If 2K3 had more content it would have been fine, unfortunately the map selection was tiny and it just felt sparse.

Very interesting way to go about this. Might follow the development as this could be quite the hit if the handle it right. Keep it up, Epic.

Loved shooting the ball at an opponent, wasting him and then picking the ball back up. Almost as much fun as impact hammer kills.

@razeeverything: No shit.

"Hey guys, I have an amazing offer for you. Help Epic make the next UT! It only will cost you 10/m to help us make our f$%ing game."

This might be the dumbest thing I've seen from a game company. Not because it won't work, because it will, but because it's just disgusting.

Also, Nali warcow. If they aren't in it, they F'ed it up.

Epic is in the business of selling their engines. They need to let other devs and publishers know that they are putting out a game on their own engine to encourage sales and training. Most people are too afraid to ship a game on a proprietary engine ahead of the engine development company, which is in this case Epic.

Huh, the original Unreal and UT99 composer Michiel Van Den Bos (who made most of the music along with Alexander Brandon) just posted on Epic's Unreal Tournament forums inquiring if they would like him to write music for the game: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?4828-Music-(Original-Unreal-UT-Composer)&p=32267

Man, I really hope they'll get him on, his music (along with Brandon's and Peter Hajba's) was a huge part in what made me absolutely adore that game.

I think the biggest news here is that it's not getting developed for consoles.

I'm hoping that we'll see a return to the high-speed, twitch-based shooting of the original UT (and to a lesser extent UT2003 and 2004).

Just gimme fast shooting, fast running, unobtrusive and clear graphics, and a pumping soundtrack. Just all of those things.

I think it's really interesting that they decided to announce it as they started writing the first lines of code. That suggests that they will be open to community involvement, right from the beginning, which is something that will work really well in the UT universe.

As for free-to-play, I'm all for it. The modding community behind the series in the past has provided some of the best and most ridiculous gameplay experiences I've ever had. I'd love to give them some money!

UT99 had some of the best bot trash talk ever (they're deep space miners after all). My favorite line came once in awhile from "Aryss":

This is a great way to further promote UE4.

And since the consoles are now glorified gaming PCs inside, the port from the PC version to consoles will be a snap. So, I won't be surprised to see a contract to be signed by community participants in the development that Epic reserves the right to all revenues in the console ports.

That happened with the Falcon 4 community when eventually a bunch of guys formed a new company, Lead Pursuit, and released a version of the community developed code as Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, and shared the revenue with the IP holder Hasbro.

Hell man if they just made a remastered HD version of UT2004 with ONS-Torlan and modern graphics I'd buy it.

If they can have the same sorta pace/ gameplay of 2004 with F2P gear hooks and new graphics I will be all over that.

I bought UT3 and it felt slower and clunkier. The onslaught modes became to finicky as well. PLUS the art style after 2004 went REAL WEIRD.

Well I guess releasing it F2P will save Steam the trouble of putting it up for free weekends like every other week.

Seriously though, pretty pumped for a new UT. They are the only Epic games I ever really played. Except for Jazz Jackrabbit.
