The Next Unreal Tournament's Starting Development Today

Epic Games is quite literally starting from scratch with its latest competitive shooter.

All hail Facing Worlds!

No Caption Provided

That's all I can think about with the news that Epic Games is making a new Unreal Tournament game. The developer announced it's writing the first lines of code today, and the game's development will be a collaborative process in the coming months (years?).

"The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS," the company said in a blog.

For the moment, it's only being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux.

When it's eventually released, the new Unreal Tournament won't cost anything to play. Epic hopes to make back its money by allowing modders to sell content in a marketplace where the company takes a slice of the profits. It sounds similar to Steam workshop.

The company is going to document the game's development on Twitch, and there's a stream ongoing as this story is being published.

More details on how you can become involved in the development are in this blog post.

So... 2017-2018, then?

I'm a bit sad they're only making a completely free UT (big budget arena shooters will never be a thing, will they), but I'll take it!

Oh man, I'm really happy about this. I just hope it'll be in the style of UT99 and UT3 rather than the vehicle focused UT2k3/4.

It looks like Epic learnt from Valve in making the community work for them while at the same time stimulating as much people as they can to start using UE4.

This is very exciting. I wonder if we'll hear anything more at E3. Probably not, right? Seeing as its so soon and they've only just announced that they're working on it.

I hope we can buy maps and mods instead of skins, something you can actually see in the game.

My favourite experiences with UT have been "free to play" anyway. As good as UT2K4 was, the demo for it has a fonder place in my memory. So many players, so many fun games.

Hopefully it will be a big open alpha from early on so the community can give a lot of feedback. I like the "Free, not free to play" line they said on the stream.

We're once again at a scenario where I would rather pay a lump sum of $40 or $50 for a complete product than buy individual pieces of content for $3-$5. Developers used to worry about things like a fractured userbase because not everybody had matching content. What, am I supposed to sit things out for 15-30+ minutes because UT4 wants me to download 2gb in maps and skins before it'll let me play with my friends?

And what about mods? Mods flourished because they were free. But if every mod developer suddenly knows they can easily charge $5 or $10 for their mod, well, I really don't like the sound of that at all. The entire reason I've tried Source Mods like No More Room in Hell, Fistful of Frags and Neotokyo is because they were free (no offense to mod developers). Look at Dino D-Day, or The Ship! Those are basically paid Source Mods that could've made a splash if they were free.

It's good that they want to turn mod making in to a bigger business, but from the perspective of "I want to spend less money, not more" it sucks big time.

It's abit weird that UE4 is available without Epic releasing a game to prove it actually works first, but they obviously have enough of a track record where that shouldn't be a problem... should it?

@blazehedgehog: Huh? I got the impression this just a totally free game, it has what is basically Steam Workshop built-in from Day 1. I bet it will work like TF2, there will be "main" maps and modes every one has, but the community will make more and if the develop into quality products, Epic will take the maps and put them into the game "proper".

Unreal Tournament will be free — but not free-to-play, according to the developer.

"Free means free — no microtransactions," he said. "Just free."

When asked how Epic will earn income with a free game, Polge said that Unreal Tournament will "eventually" have a marketplace where modders can post and give away or sell their maps, mods and other content.

All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.

Wow, love to see dota2+ model for a change. I was expecting F2P microtransaction hell. UT is my fav shooter series by far.

This seems interesting. I'm not too worried about modders charging too much for their content. Mods are optional. The ones that get popular will be the free ones. I'm definitely not going to put paid content on my server. Sure some people will charge too much, but the most popular stuff will be free. You won't have to pay anything to enjoy the core UT experience. As long as the game feels like UT, I'm happy with it.

I imagine in the beginning most people wont charge anything, then one paid mod will take off and everyone will try to get in on making money from mods, maps, skins, ect. The community should filter out the crap. I wish it was just a $60 game with free tools, but I think this is a very interesting experiment. I'm on board.

Just give me small to medium symmetrical maps with traditional modes and I'll be psyched. That conquest/vehicle whatever nonsense sort of ruined Unreal for me.

Only just now they're starting? god damn it I wanted a new UT years ago. The wait on this is gonna be painful as it already has been.

Literally hasn't been a shooter as good as ut2004 since ut2004.

I don't know if it was your intention, but this sentiment sounds more than a little selfishly exploitative. Almost like something a publisher/developer could traditionally be expected to say about a modding community profiting (god forbid) off their work.

It's not free to play. It's just free. Free to play implies microtransactions. There are none. (Although users who make mods can charge for them if they want. God forbid people charge for their work! Don't buy any mods if that bothers you, though. I'm sure there'll be thousands of free ones.)

I know. It was sarcasm. I expect it to work like Team Fortress 2 does. As long as they don't over charge too much for the items, like TF2 does, and keep it to just being cosmetic stuff like hats then I'm fine with it.

Yes, it is absolutely great that they want to turn mod development in to a business, but it also means there are going to be a lot more mods that struggle to gain any relevance whatsoever. The highs will be higher, but the lows will also be way, way lower. We are going to see a lot more mods like Dino D-Day and The Ship: cute ideas that shrivel up and die almost immediately because nobody is going to pay even $5 for them.

Meanwhile, Pirates Vikings & Knights has been hangin' on since the HL1 days. It's quirky, weird, and totally nonstandard, but since its free, your only loss for trying it out is the ten minutes it takes to install.

I'd have to be convinced to spend money on something like PVK2. But since its free, well, sure, I'll give it a shot.

But how many people that were once in it to make a small-time, free mod are going to start trying to charge for that kind of content and die on the vine? I'm going to wager a lot.

Hey Epic, quit pretending you are still developing games.

I'm excited but a bit cautious. UT99 is still one of my favorite games of all time and UT2k4 is also up there, but man was 3 a disappointment. The only part of 3 I really enjoyed was how meaty the flak cannon felt.
