The Nintendo News You Missed Last Night

Nintendo's getting into the NFC craze, making apps, and more.

In addition to Nintendo revealing it's not making much money yesterday, the company held a financial results briefing where it revealed a bit more about its strategy for the coming months.

No Caption Provided

This includes a few teases of what we'll be seeing at E3.

Chiefly, in the vein of Skylanders, Nintendo is finally going to take advantage of the NFC chip inside Wii U's Game Pad. The company will release figurines to interact with games on both Wii U and 3DS. Since the 3DS does not have an NFC chip, Nintendo will be releasing an accessory. The development codename for this has been the "Nintendo Figurine Platform."

More details on NFP are coming at E3, and the company specifically said multiple titles are involved. The games and figurine program are expected to launch before the year is over.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo also confirmed the upcoming Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are "full-remakes" of the Game Boy Advance games Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire.

Nintendo has talked about paying more attention to mobile and tablet devices, even if that doesn't mean answering calls for the company to produce games for them. Instead, Nintendo will launch a web service called Mario Kart TV, allowing users to watch videos, keep track of friends, monitor tournaments, etc.

In an interview with Reuters, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the company would be looking into releasing new hardware and software specifically targeted at emerging markets. Though details on this initiative are light, Iwata said Nintendo could being rolling this new program sometime next year.

So let me get this straight, we transition to digital media to eliminate useless discs and boxes, then replace them with other unnecessary items that consume even more space?

Sadly the majority have not converted to digital media, at least on consoles. It amazes me how many people still buy boxed PC titles as well.

Wait... people buy those things? I wouldn't even know where to find them, since most retailers don't hold them in stock...

I still prefer to buy physical copies of games; console and PC. I enjoy having a shelf of titles I can browse through. I get why digital is the way things are going - convenience and cost - but I think I'll always love the feeling of opening a brand new box.

I agree with you. I like to have the physical copy of games, specially those that I know I will return from time to time... But I don't know if its still possible to have them on PC. I don't know many stores that have shelve space dedicated to boxed PC games. The only exception being the Blizzard games, that I still see occasionally.

Really, only the larger electronics places still do -- like Fry's and Best Buy. I'll order a PC game on Amazon and have it shipped with, Prime usually.

My closet is full of game junk and it really is all junk and has no intrinsic value beyond "the game" it is attached too. I understand how people like "the feelies" but keep in mind that a lot of people don't want more stuff in their house like this because it turns out it is difficult to get rid of where even throwing it in the dumpster may get you into trouble.

Whelp, I'm going to buy the shit out of the Ruby and Sapphire remakes.

If only they were going to do an Emerald one. Oh well, Pokemon Bank will help with that. Hopefully.

I feel bad for all the people expecting them to do something different from the other NFC games. Hell, I would be surprised if the implementation wasn't more generic than we're already used to, what with the multiple title functionality thing.

Copying a three year old idea from Activision and vaguely dabbling in mobile games... well, can't say something nice don't say anything at all I guess.

But hey, new Pokemon! Well... a new Pokemon remake anyways. Keep on keeping on Nintendo.

The implication with the NFC chip is that they implimented it into the Gamepad long before anything Skylanders related was announced (i.e. they would have been developed simultaneously). The news is that they are finally going to use it - which is different to the original pitch in that it was added as a feature for other developers (most notably, Ubisoft) to use. This is important since doing it with their own titles proves they are actively trying to prove why the gamepad is so good themselves (and not just waiting for third parties to prove it since they were the ones who advised Nintendo to add it). It's going to take a lot of effort on their part, but at least they are trying. Clearly the Gamepad has not been used effectively and is basically pointless right now apart form some very fleeting and specific uses. This is a tip-off that they are trying to amend that (regardless of if it will work).

OT: I guess its cool, but I wish they would work around the capacity problem of NFC to prevent saturation. I can see how it would grow into a problem if each figurine could only handle a handful of games.

Have to admit, I really hoped "Nintendo's getting into the NFC craze" was more about Zoë Quinn and less about Skylanders. Ah well.

Is 'emerging markets' still code for China and India, or does it mean something else now? Not sure how Ninty sees itself raking in cash in two of the top countries for software piracy …

Maybe they're worried about just making too much money on Mario and Link figures.

Anyways. Nintendo figurines, not a bad move, I would presume

That's nothing to do with nintendo's design, he was answering why skylanders figures can't be put on the wii u controller instead of the skylanders platform thing if the controller supports NFC. I imagine these nintendo produced things won't work like that.

I'd imagine Activison also wanted the portal to keep manufacturing costs of the figures down. Everyone else plays with RFID, and the entire point of Skylanders is that they work on multiple platforms.

Ugh Skylanders, Disney, now Nintendo. All things I have no interest in getting NFC chipped toys of. Now if they made an NFC warhammer game or something or D&D, that would be cool.

Look into Golem Arcana (by Harebrained Schemes) or Prodigy (by Hanakai Studio). They're sort of playing around with the idea. I think there are more, but those are the two that comes to mind.

At least early access gives you something to play for <$60. This IMO, not just to Elsie(aka Nintedno), the media continually approves of this business practice with opens arms and it's disgusting. They will slam early access and DLC but embrace this practice with open arms. This is a joke.

I wonder how populair those Nintendo figures will be.

I mean, you're up against Skylanders, that is an established franchise and Disney/Marvel/Soon Star Wars. Seems like it's an uphill battle for good ol' Nintendo.

Note to gamers: Grow the fuck up fast before you are knee deep in Nintendo NFP debt.

I'm sure whatever they have planned for these emerging markets it will be cute, and adorable. That's pretty much all they seem to know how to do. "Got children? Are you a child yourself? Are you a adult that never grew up? Well we've got something for allll those markets!"

I just got to ask: if there was a NFC chip in the GamePad, then why the FUCK didn't Activision and Disney bother using it for Skylanders and Disney Infinity?

But that doesn't matter because RUBY/SAPPHIRE REMAKES AAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW YEEEEEAAAAAAAAH

I'm interested in how Nintendo will approach with their NFP figurines.

While it is easy to think the worse, keep in mind Nintendo's approach with DLC and microtransactions. At their worse with Mario Golf: World Tour (3DS), they are offering a $15 season pass for a $30 game that clearly details the additional courses and characters the DLC will give you in exchange for money. Rusty's Real Deal Baseball crafts a narrative around the free-to-play and microtransaction experience that engages the player and offers (pre-programmed) discounts. The Streetpass Plaza DLC has a slimy, humorous sales bunny that contextualizes the transaction. And for New Super Mario Bros 2, Nintendo has made it painfully clear that the DLC they made for that game was made after the main game was finished.

Given the above history, we have good reason to hope that Nintendo will make their NFP figurines a compelling and reasonable addition to their games.

Or they might just fuck it all up.
