Are some people in this thread not aware of what the actual harassment was that Zoe Quinn went through? The people who perpetrated that are internet jerks and are definitely human garbage. That's my understanding of what Patrick and Zoe are going to talk about on that panel. I have no idea how it's controversial in the slightest that people who harass other people in disgusting ways over the internet are jerks and garbage people. I also have no idea how there's any sort of debate over this.

@mrfalcon: If you take a look at his post again you will notice he says Patrick sucks at X, Y, and Z rather than just saying Patrick himself sucks. Not only that, he actually compliments Patrick in other areas, though it's his skills as a journalist and a game reviewer he has issue with.

All I can see here is fair criticism while you're trying to make it personal.

Patrick provided me personally with many hours of entertainment with his Spelunky/BOI streams, so why wouldn't I "pick his side"? Of course I'm going to "pick his side" over someone who is completely useless to me like arch4non or Goldanas.

The big problem is not objection or disagreement on the Internet, it's how people choose to disagree, and the lack of civility that comes with those disagreements.

Your post makes some completely reasonable arguments about people's tastes, and you are of course entitled to your dislike of Patrick's writing style and/or opinions and conclusions on certain issues.

These points were well articulated and made in your reply, yet it seems you still felt the need to lace your opinions with personal insults and put-downs towards Patrick, and with condescending remarks towards those who would disagree with you.

Do you genuinely feel that it is necessary to do that, in order to get your point across? Do you not have enough faith in your argument or opinion to let it stand alone, without some added vitriol?

That's what I meant by "half way there" at the start.. Try to articulate your disagreements or dislikes without also attacking the source of those dislikes..

@goldanas: I take issue with Patrick's style and tone of covering certain (usually controversial) topics too, despite actually agreeing with his conclusion more often than not. You're right that a lot of people point out these things and are right to offer that criticism. That said, I don't think there is any excuse for any of the abuse directed at him and I don't think the people that are doing it give a crap about any legitimate criticisms of his work. They're just assholes looking for attention and a reaction.

@goldanas: Yeah, I see what you mean. The recent tsunami of praise surrounding Gone Home for example was a bit irritating to see, not because the game was particularly bad or anything, but because so many reviewers used it as an opportunity to push their agenda rather than actually reviewing the game. Before you know it you've got one side saying the game is the greatest thing ever which legitimizes video games as an artform while the other side is saying it's nothing but a walking simulator with a low tier story belonging on the Hallmark Channel.

Then you've got folks like triviaman09 who instantly dismiss anything the "jerks" have to say no matter how civil or valid their opinions are. It creates a toxic atmosphere which only encourages people to pick a side and stick to it without any actual discourse or middle ground.

Looks like the Internet Jerks (IJs?) have at least found this thread...

There's a very simple reason why you get the kind of blow back on Patrick that you do: Critical Mass.

It starts with the simple notion that Patrick sucks as a writer, entertainer, and overall critic of anything with his half-thought points (often glaringly ignoring any possible counterpoints). That's not to say he isn't a wonderfully nice guy (at least through the visor of the Internet), can often add great perspectives to a discussion, can be pretty killer at games, and honestly cares about his work. It's just those first negatives that initiate the next step.

You have a build. One person points the above out, another agrees, another yet further concurs, and then it starts to be a game of telephone where points originally made start to get more outlandish, whether due to hyperbole or due to an inability to more solemnly express and explain, until it balloons into something just stupidly absurd (SJW PANDERING SHILL BLAH BLAH BLAH), and now there are so many people wrapped up in this that you've got a giant mob mentality until it eventually reaches:

And here we are today. The reason it persists is that Patrick still exhibits the original issues as a writer and public figure, so they can easily continue to balloon and carry on. Is it his fault? Not entirely, but I personally don't like his writing and ham-fisted opinions that almost always carry a one-sided tone that has already decided what's right. It's not for me, and it's not for a lot of people as has been clearly evidenced, but there are definitely a fair amount of people who are into it, so there's no reason he can't continue doing what he's doing if that's what floats his boat (and yours).

No one has to change, or should be forced to, but occasionally public figures do have some of the power themselves to curb their detractors.

I don't get the point of that panel. Internet jerks have already won, long ago.

I wonder what sorts of blanket statements and sweeping generalizations are going to come out of that panel on internet jerks.

I'm only gonna be there Saturday, and I have plans during the panel, but I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you guys on the show floor! PAX rules! I got to chat with Brad, Alex, and Patrick back in 2012, and got a picture with Ryan last year, which I still treasure to this day.

Shame the panel's at 4am here. Hopefully it'll be up for viewing in the morning. I think I remember watching last year's 404 internet thing on Youtube so hopefully there are some recordings of these panels

@jeff: It is a really nice day outside - after you get your toothbrush head over to the Brooklyn heights promenade (a few blocks away from where you are). It has great views of Manhattan and lady liberty :)
