The PlayStation 4 Exists

Sony finally unveils its new console, which is headed to living rooms this holiday season.

Mark Cerny talking informed system architecture.
Mark Cerny talking informed system architecture.

Well, that was interesting.

Sony today did what pretty much everyone expected it to, and unveiled the PlayStation 4, the company's first new home console in seven years. The system will run on an x86 CPU, with an enhanced PC GPU and 8 gigabytes of on-board GDDR5 memory. The new controller, titled the DualShock 4, features a touch pad and a move-styled light bar on the back, which will allow it to interact with a new PlayStation Eye device. It was not stated as to whether that device would come with the console or not.

Among the many key features Sony touted, the system's various online and user interface functionalities took center stage. Seemingly responding directly to much of the infrastructural criticism lobbed at the PlayStation 3, the PS4 is aimed to make loading up and getting into a game easier than ever. Players who want to leave their game, for instance, now can actually power the system down to a lower power state, and resume the game exactly where they left off prior. When downloading games off of the PlayStation Network, you will now be able to start a game before it's even finished downloading.

Also much pushed (and occasionally maligned on social media) was the system's new social media functionality. A share button on the new controller lets you recap the last several minutes of gameplay you've just experienced, and share specific portions via your social media networks through a quick, presumably easy-to-use process.

Gaikai was also a big focus of the event. Dave Perry arrived to explain how Gaikai's game streaming service will benefit the PlayStation 4 tech, including allowing streamable demos of every game in the PlayStation Store, and made the case that eventually (but likely not in the immediate future), all PS1, PS2, and PS3 games could be available via cloud streaming. This is sort of key, as the PlayStation 4 will not feature backward compatibility support for PlayStation 3 games.

Of course, the event was also replete with tech and game demos, designed to show off the hardware's prowess. Here's a list of some of the bigger games announced and shown at the event:

Knack

A new action platformer from Sony's Japan Studio and PS4-lead Mark Cerny. Knack is a tiny robot creature...thing that can resize itself by controlling and reforming other objects in the game world.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

A new sequel in Guerrilla Games' long-running PlayStation shooter franchise. Unlike previous Killzone games, this one appears to be in color.

Drive Club

A new racing title from MotorStorm developers Evolution Studios, which includes numerous social features and challenges. While little in-game action was shown, game director Matt Southern made much ado about the game's visual prowess, and the experience of getting into a virtual car. It was kind of a weird demo, to be honest.

Infamous: Second Son

A follow-up to Sucker Punch's acclaimed superhero action game, which appears to feature a new protagonist, and a decidedly anti-government paranoia-infused storyline.

The Witness

Jonathan Blow's long-awaited follow-up to Braid will be coming to the PlayStation 4 at launch.

Deep Down

A fantasy action game from Capcom that was shown largely in tech demo form. This was, in many respects, the most visually impressive demo of the program, though considering the relatively early state of the project, it's tough to say how much of it would carry over into a playable game.

Final Fantasy Something

After showing the same next-gen tech demo it showed at last year's E3, Square Enix also briefly teased that a new Final Fantasy offering would be coming to the PS4, and that we can expect to see it for the first time at E3 2013.

Watch Dogs

A new demo of Ubisoft's paranoia-fueled open-world game was shown. This marks the first time Ubisoft has directly addressed Watch Dogs as a next-gen title, something it assiduously avoided doing when it debuted the game at E3 last year.

Diablo III

Yes, that Diablo III, from that developer Blizzard, is coming to both the PS4 and PS3 later this year.

Destiny

Bungie briefly appeared to show off roughly the same footage and content we saw of Destiny earlier this week, but also mentioned that the PS4 version would be featuring exclusive content of some kind.

Finally, Sony let slip that the PlayStation 4 would be arriving on store shelves sometime this coming holiday season. Though no price was announced, nor was the actual form of the PS4 box shown, it seems likely we can expect to hear about those things at E3.

So, honestly, what did you think? If you watched our live chat, you undoubtedly noticed that much of our editorial staff was largely impressed with the quality of Sony's showcase. I think I'd echo that sentiment, especially considering I wasn't really expecting to see more than one or two games demoed during the event. Still, we're early in this process, and haven't had hands-on time with any of this stuff. If nothing else, this Sony event seemed to demonstrate a lot of good ideas. We'll see soon enough if the company is able to execute on them.

Microsoft would have to rethink their subscripiton model for Xbox Live, as well as deliver everything Sony did today. I don't think either is going to happen.

Rumour would suggest the opposite is true. More PSN features, including online play are to be locked behind the pay wall. Makes sense, considering how willing people are to throw money at Microsoft for no reason, but I did really hope it would be MS rethinking their online strategy, not Sony.

I highly doubt that. Source?

I'd be shocked if Sony won't start charging for their online with the PS4. Or, at the very least, keep sharing and new fancy functions to PSN+ members only. Guess we'll see in the upcoming months, since there are no official sources on this just yet, but again...I'd be extremely surprised if that wasn't the case.

Whatever gets put behind the PSN+ pay wall, it won't be basic online gameplay. For all I care, they can put everything but that behind the pay wall and keep their competitive edge. As soon as I cannot play online multiplayer out of the box, I'm out.

The event itself was quite an eye opener, but not because of "Hey this is the next Sony thing" but because of "Hey this is the next generation y'all"

Sony have burnt their bridges with me due to their repeated miss-treatment of the eurpopean market, their eye gouging digital pricing, and their endless waiting of months to bring things over to europe compared to Microsoft.

From the actual games side of things, was good to see what the next generation is going to be capabale of as i believe there'll be parity between the specs of both next gen systems.

What i wasn't impressed with was Sony's lack of innovation. It seemd to take ideas from other areas (Kinect, Wii-U etc.) or just flat out buy up a company that had developed something neat (Gaiki). There was no actual Sony innovation in my opinion, just itteration on innovations that were dreamed up by somebody else.

I was hoping Sony would show me something to reel me back in, to re-gain some of that trust they've lost from me in the last few years, but nothing i saw made me jump out of my chair and say "PS4 is the one for me." Instead i thought "That's cool, but the new XBox will have the same graphics power etc. so no need to jump ship"

So, I brought a PS3 a few of years back to play a few non-PC games but mostly to play The Last Guardian. Does this mean it's not going to come out on the PS3?

Destiny seemed bland from what I saw. Of course watching concept videos and seconds of gameplay can't possibly paint the whole picture. I'm thinking that there could be some nice and fun features to it but that it is all wrapped in the skin of a first person shooter which automatically makes a lot of people shrug it off.

@creamypies: I like the situation we're in. Sony setting a standard for stage demos, packing it with big names and promises. It'll be really interesting to see Microsoft, whether they're trying to compete directly on the vision of Sony or attempt to juggle with prices and hardware to make the new XBOX relevant.

@babychoochoo: I haven't seen that among duders here. Just disappointment. When we saw Blizzard we expected something new to be announced, but what is important to draw from this is that there is a partnership now which extends beyond Diablo 3. Something for the future.

They are a very specialized group of people for whom the new infrastructures announced will be incredibly useful. The majority of people with a PS4 aren't going to have that many people to interact with, no need to record videos of their gameplay, or any one watching their livestreams. They are impressive additions, but things that most of us are never or rarely going to use.

Sony threw the gauntlets down pretty fucking hard yesterday. I was impressed. That said, there are some things that concern me (though I didn't expect them to announce them at that showing). Specifically, price, they also didn't say anything about their online service remaining free - personally, I think it isn't and they tap into that XBL money they've been leaving on the table - and the fact that they didn't show the console at all was weird to me.

@funkydupe: Oops, sorry. Yeah, everyone here is pretty chill here. The disappointment is understandable. I like Diablo 3 and even I'm disappointed that's all they showed. I was just referring to a lot of other outlets/forums. I Google'd something about the press conference (don't even remember what because I got sidetracked lol) earlier and one of the results was something like "Fans outraged at Blizzard's PS4 announcement" or something like that.

So, I decided to dive a bit deeper and, well, let's just say the Diablo 3 forums and Twitter exploded with rage. I've seen some angry people...but damn lol.

True, but where else is sony going to go with tech? It can play games, play media, do whatever else a person with a focus on solitary gameplay would want. It seems like the social aspect is the best place for expansion and what they are focusing on and doing seems really cool, and I say that as someone who will most likely never use it.

My comment was more to the point that you rarely see the crew in moments of actual awe over something (I fully recognize that "awe" might be too strong a word in this case) and it was pleasant to see them just being like "hey, that's actually pretty cool"

Overwhelming facepalmingly disappointing. Mark Cerny's psychotic gaze and the Cliched Powerpoint From Hell That Was Put Together Within The Last Week would have just been disturbing/irritating, but combined with the tech-heavy talk, the nervous looking developers, the soulless Killzone demo, the overly-soulful Creepy Old Man (which was impressive, but a man's emoting head spinning in a void is rather unsettling), the seemingly useless, tacked-on touchpad, and all these paint-by-numbers games...there was just no reason for me to care about the console.

I really, -really- tried to be impressed and develop an active appreciation of the system. I've not been a fan of Sony and their approach to hardware and games since the PSP, and likely wouldn't have picked up a PS2 if it hadn't been for Persona 4. I don't wanna be That Guy, I really, really really really don't, but Sony has just been such a huge bummer. I felt like I watched the company implode on that stage as they showed games that did nothing with the touchpad and the light bar and the new Eye camera. I still don't see a use for the touchpad other than maybe using it as a trackpad for a mouse cursor (and -that's- how you port Diablo, kids!), but the light bar has some cool potential in weird ways, and the controller looks more ergonomic. But even though the Eye and the DualShock 4 were the only pieces of hardware they showed, they still managed to overlook them. It was genuinely upsetting for me.

For the record, I own a Wii U. Day One Early Adopter. I only owned a Wii last generation because I could rely on my PC to take care of any titles the Wii couldn't handle. Considering the more PC-esque architecture of the XBOX3.0 (potentially) and the PS4 (fairly confirmed), I don't imagine I'll be missing anything other than certain Sony exclusives--of which there were maybe a handful I wanted on the PS3 (The Last of Us, Journey, maybe inFamous as well). As with the PS3, I'll wait until the PS4's twilight years and the inevitable sub-$200 price point to pick one up. Which says a lot, because I'm never going to pick up a 360, because I'm not interested in Halo or Gears or Kinect, and just about everything else ends up on PC.

The way things are looking, I can keep to my Nintendo/PC lifestyle and not really miss much of anything. And that's kinda sad, because I desperately wanted to care about the PS4. The footage sharing might have been cool, but as a UI designer I immediately was struck with how terrible the PlayStation UI still is--worse, even, because the share screens are a mess. If I can't tell at a glance where I'm supposed to look at, the UI is flawed from the start, and if continued observation fails to improve my understanding of it, then the UI is immediately unhinged, as far as I'm concerned. The tiled shared content section looks like the worst parts of Myspace, Pinterest, and bad Tumblr themes all had a malformed UI baby, and it's just a huge bummer.

I dunno. Is anyone else as bummed as me?

Sony showed exactly what they needed to show, considering we're in February and this won't be out until November.

New Infamous game has me excited, definitely my favorite 1st party franchise from the PS3. Bummed that the Motorstorm guys are basically making a Gran Turismo, since my pre-requisites for racing games is that they bounce or blow up real good.

Also, Sony PR confirmed they will not block used games and you won't require an internet connection to play them.

I'm already a PSN Plus subscriber, so if they move online MP behind the wall as well as keep the free game train running, I'd be okay with that, although it would be disappointing.

Looking forward to seeing more for sure. E3 can't get here soon enough.

I am going to have to put myself in the disappointed category. I will agree that the graphics are great, but I fully expected DX11 capability. They really havent innovated at all. The controller is the same ( WHO THE FUCK HAS THE CONTROLLER REST ON BUTTONS....STILL ) with a little touch screen. Expect that to go the way of the six axis, unused. They showed no gameplay footage, which should raise some flags, and few exclusive games, why would you show so many multi-platform games? I would have been much more interested in showing something we can do now that we couldn't before. I thought that the rewind feature was by far the best thing they showed.

I expect that E3 will continue to be games focused, as I suspected this would be, because when they actually advertise the system in the fall games will be secondary to grab in the more casual media player market.

I'm probably predisposed to be an easy sell for the PS4, and I'm pretty confident I'll pick one up at some point just to have 'a new thing'.

I thought they did a great job with the presentation and I'm excited to see more at E3. I do wish there would have been more new IPs, though I get that it's unrealistic to expect a ton of new stuff this early. Everything besides Deep Down felt like a known quantity to me. I didn't feel like there was anything akin to The Phantom Pain/MGS5 trailer from the VGAs, which got me really excited and was something I didn't expect. But again, it's good to keep in mind what's realistic for a console reveal.

I don't think I'll be there on day 1 for the PS4, but it has me really interested. It's might sound overly dismissive to say this, but it seems like Sony is doing "enough". There's "enough" of a graphics/hardware/network/etc. improvement. The PS4 doesn't excite me as much as the PS2 did (I remember -freaking- -out- that the characters in Onimusha had FINGERS and not blocky Tomb Raider 1 style hamfists), but the PS4 does seem like enough of an improvement with enough new features to be worth picking up.

I'm pretty psyched that they're getting up on that General Purpose GPU Programming wagon (as demoed with physics objects simulated on the GPU). It's been possible on the PC for years, but without any applicability to consoles it never really took off outside of throwaway PhysX support on a few PC titles. It would be incredible for that sort of thing to actually have an effect on gameplay. That's probably the most exciting bit to me.

Also, hell of textures; 8GB is a lot of RAM for a console.

My takeaway from this is mostly that I'm going to be really fucking disappointed if Microsoft's new box doesn't have hardware parity with the PS4. I really don't want to be put in a position where I have to choose between buying third-party games for the console with the best port, or buying them for the console where the people I know are playing multiplayer. It seems like a lot more than graphics capabilities will be on the line this gen if Microsoft's console isn't up to snuff.

I like some of the system level stuff like background downloads and sleep mode, playing something after a partial download is cool but i wonder what happens if the download finishes while you're playing it but it needs to patch.

The graphics shown weren't impressive but i was expecting that, the small improvements we make now arn't quite the jump we had going from last gen to this one, and my PC seems to be more powerful than the specs given.

Nothing in the Gaikai segment applies to me because my max download is 400kbps, not enough for HD streaming of anything, love the idea of trying demos without waiting though, maybe in 300 years time when i find somewhere in the UK with modern broadband.

@gerp: Yes it is. Which is fucking insane. You'd need like 4 graphics cards to get that much in a computer. Looks like Sony took the complaints about the RAM setup in the PS3 to heart. Can't imagine a much better RAM situation than 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM.

Disappointed we didn't get to see the hardware or any price info. Not going to get too excited about the games until I see more gameplay footage and when they are actually going to come out, though what they did show was impressive looking. Also controller looks a little goofy, not sure how they're going to implement that touch pad in any good way. I'm interested but not as excited as most seem to be.

Somehow I don't think that Diablo3 will work all too well on the PS3/4 as well as finally feeling like it is a complete game. Maybe by the time the PS4 will be out is when the pvp might show up in D3. Overall feels like a lackluster sneak peak at this console until we see it in action.

Mmmmm ... not impressed. Satisfied, I suppose. It was good to hear that some of the systems specs were on the high side of the rumors. Game-wise, it seemed silly to tout Diablo 3, a game with a rather mixed opinion among gamers. A new InFamous, good. Watch_Dogs is multiplatform, so ... alright. The game showcase was interesting, but more something I'd expect out of E3 than a new console announcement. Since I'm not terribly interested in the social functions, maybe that can account for my ho-hum attitude. Depending on exclusives, I'd probably consider the PS4 over whatever Microsoft offers, but we've only heard one side so far. Let's see what Microsoft brings to the party, and then I'll decide if I'm impressed or not. At this point, I suspect I'll be thinking about sliding back into PC gaming. For the prices they're going to be asking ... I'm not sure either next-gen console is going to make much sense.

I would have liked to have actually seen the box, though.

Another thing: I wonder if their lack of announcement on price was a result of the blowback they had after their announcement of the PS3. All anyone talked about afterward was how high the price was. If Sony wants a high price point for this (and I think they do) maybe they were smart to let the positive buzz build before they start popping balloons with the 499-599 price they're probably going to set for this thing. I could be wrong about that, but I suspect I'm not.

Very impressed but I'm leery on what the price will be. Hopefully Sony will be able to finally shed the air of negativity that has surrounded it since some early Faux Pas' they made this generation. Very curious to see how Microsoft will answer.

Whatever, I'm sticking with consoles this generation too; I haven't cared to have another gaming PC since I ditched PC gaming when the PS2 launched.

My take on this new hardware will be the same as the last 2 Playstation consoles. I will buy them, but after an inevitable price drop after being out for a a year or 2 when developers have had more time to play with the hardware and fully explore it. Better looking games are great but new gameplay mechanics are more important to me.

No backwards compatibility sounds like a good way to cut costs, because it sure seems like anyone who wants to play PS3 games would have a PS3 by now. Of course, having both playstations out requires double the space and cables, but eh.

Do we know if all 8 GB of RAM are gddr5?

You can't split RAM. It has to all be DDR3 or DDR5.

I must be missing something, because I didn't really find it all that exciting. They confirmed that the thing exists, but barely showed anything of a few games, and didn't really do all that much otherwise. Mostly it made me more excited for E3 this year.

The PS4 sounds and looks amazing. I just hope all that functionality and tech works on launch. I was seriously impressed with the meeting and Sony really came out swinging. Microsoft has their work cut out for them.

PS4 looked very impressive, hopefully they can make good on their word with all the crazy features promised, machine itself is packing some serious power for console and it showed in the demos (hopefully guerilla fixes that awkward walking down stairs animation), i will admit i'm not looking forward to price with all the tech in it, still would've liked to see the box

Not impressed, there are game streaming services that work very well.

And most games are multi platform anyway.

Considering psp, vita and even the PS3, Sony lost my confidence. The only thing that can make me get one are my Sony fanboy friends, who don't even consider getting other console. In the end, XBox and PS are the same. It's just a matter of exclusives, and I prefer Halo, Forza and Gears of War over sony's. A shame that here in Portugal, M$ fails miserably to publicise their consoles, while Sony does it so well. Oh, and I think Xbox's game pad is also superior. But I guess that's a question of taste.

So... Not very impressed with the PS4 so far. Nor I think I'll be with Durango, tbh. But I'll eventually get one of those, I guess. Destiny seems very interesting...
