The Top Characters of January 2010

Hey, curious to know who the most popular characters of January were? I was, so I went digging.

Around three or four homepage designs back, we used to keep better tabs of what the most popular database pages were by slapping them right on the homepage. After hard science showed that no one was actually clicking on any of that stuff, we cut it.

(Though before we go much further, I agree with you that we should probably bring it back in some form, just not necessarily on the homepage.)

As I was sifting through the growing Quick Look Thread over on NeoGAF, a dude named Karram reminded me that we used to have all that stuff. While I'm not enough of a database query man to actually build a page that automatically does this, it did get me thinking about alternate ways to get that information together.

So I started digging through the traffic logs and pulled together this list of the ten most-visited character pages on Giant Bomb for the month of January.

  1. Miranda Lawson
  2. Bayonetta
  3. John "Soap" MacTavish
  4. Tali'Zorah nar Rayya
  5. Subject Zero
  6. Taokaka
  7. Captain Price
  8. Mad Moxxi
  9. Death (Darksiders)
  10. Jill Valentine

I guess I'm not surprised that Miranda's done so well for herself, though I did think that the boss man, Commander Shepard, would make the list.

So I'll put it to you guys--I know this list stuff is pretty fluffy, but I'm genuinely interested in knowing what you guys are looking at, and I'm willing to bet that some portion of you are, as well. So what do you think? Should I keep digging and do something similar for concept pages and some of the other types of entries in our database? Or should I drop it and keep this stuff to myself, only stopping to look at it in the dead of night, when I'm at my loneliest? Jeff Gerstmann on Google+

I'm aware this story looks sort of janky, we're working out a few kinks in the new code that got pushed out today. Thanks.

@SuperSecretAgenda: look at  the one word that  you typed the most haha

that is your answer my friend

More content keeps me content. see how you pronounce those words differently, even though they're exactly the same?

I like your idea of fun, Jeff.

The Illusive Man and Chloe from Uncharted 2 go to the same optometrist, I think. If you could see what I've seen with your eyes...

Keep doing it. Some trend data with light analysis makes for fascinating reading in my book.

OMG my baby Tali is up there yaaaaaay ^______^

Maybe do like one random best-of thing like this a month.  I don't even know anymore what kind of crazy pages are on this site.  I used to keep up with it at the beginning.  I bet it's got real crazy.

(also, Miranda has some freaky uncanny valley eyes. gross.)

I tink half the Bayonetta visits was me, editing things in the suporting cast pages xD

@SuperSecretAgenda: I'm going to blow your mind here but the three ME2 characters are actually pretty interesting.

I can't deny your analysis though because Mordin is nowhere up there.

Well done, Miss Lawson.

I don't know why anyone likes  Miranda. She is so creepy looking.

The eyes! The eyes! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I'd love to see these sorts of statistics make a comeback.  I was really disappointed to see it go.

I really like these features. Keep'em coming Jeff.

Edited out of guilt. Please do not take what was previously written here seriously.

Taokaka - ass

I think you could even take it a step further. A segment on the Bombcast would be really interesting for me to hear, maybe monthly? Top searched (Whatever:Characters, Games, Soundtracks, Images, Best hair cut) and a little talk from you guys having a look into those stats and maybe trying to figure out why those number are the way they are for that month.

Summed it up perfectly dude.

Yeah, keep stuff like this coming. It's interesting.

I think we all knew Miranda was going to be at the top before we clicked on the link. :)

We need to make Doom Guy most visited for Feb.

Tali's awesome.

I think there are better more productive ways of spending Giantbomb resources. This site already has a ridiculous amount of features which start out as cool ideas but don't really contribute much on a daily basis. What happened to Trivia, for example?

I'm intrigued as to how Jill made that list, maybe I'm missing something.

Posted by Milkman

Yeah, I think you should totally bring back some of this stuff. Though, the top characters are kinda of a useless stat because most of the top characters are just going to be nerds looking up sexy video game ladies. But other stuff would be pretty cool to share if it was implemented in the right way.

Posted by delicious_lie

It's all hot female Mass Effect characters? what about THANE, guys!
he's a philosophical lizard assassin from a planet of jellyfish whose memories come back suddenly and without warning in wildly strobing cutscenes.
but you guys all just wanna look at the ass of the hot chick.

This would be a neat feature..it could also be a neat new segment for the podcast where you discuss website trends..somehow i think i would be the only one interested in hearing about that kinda stuff in that much detail.  I think it would be cool to have a segment built into the podcast where you discuss some of the new pages made, or some of the highly visited pages.

@SuperSecretAgenda: Damn, at first I thought I was helping. Especially with the caps lock signifying that you learned something new.
Then I :(

Look at Tali's page a few times, as I constantly forget if I'm naturally going to get her as a character in ME2, I now know I do so, over half the hits for her page were probably off me.
Also, Ratchet I've recently started playing the new one, and I've only played 3 or so, so the characters and main enemies back stories are missing to me, so I've started reading up as more of them pop up.

I'm not shocked to see Miranda top though, look at her default picture.

Bring it back. I always thought that stuff was interesting and though you say no one clicked on that stuff, I did all the time. Does that mean I'm no one? Hummmmm?

Posted by breaking3po

Maybe it could get mention somewhere in the podcast.

If these are pages everyone looks at + you mention those pages = everyone feels warm and fuzzy for you guys mentioning a page they visited.

Posted by StarFoxA

Please bring back the "most popular" lists. It was incredibly useful from a site editing standpoint.

Posted by XenturiK

Yea, I say do it

more text posts is always better

Interesting that Death is on the top ten but not War. Well, I guess you learn everything that you can from the game anyways.
